Chateaugay â€” Catherine J. Calnon, of Chateaugay, passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at her residence under the care of her family and Hospice of the North Country.
She was born in Malone on July 3, 1947, the daughter of John W. and Joyce (McCarthy) Calnon, both of who were originally from Potsdam, N.Y., and predeceased her.
A 1965 graduate of Chateaugay Central School, Cathy earned a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics from Plattsburgh State Potsdam in 1969. She began her teaching career in Malone at the junior high. She taught mathematics there for 15 years.
In 1985 Cathy came to Chateaugay Central School and taught junior high and high school mathematics for 17 years. In a message to her fellow workers this past September, Cathy wrote, "Your cards, notes, gifts, thoughts and good wishes have left me each day thanking God for such friendships and for being part of a community like this one.... I wish you all the best for another year at CCS. I love you all."
Survivors include her much loved children, Timothy J. Barnewall and Sarah A. Barnewall, both of Chateaugay. Cathy is also survived by her brother, Patrick of Chateaugay, his wife, Carolyn and their children Jennifer, Katie, and John; her brother, James of Plattsburgh; her sister, Mary Strack of West Chazy, her husband Todd and her children, Seth and Carly Drown; and her brother, Michael of Canton, Ohio, his wife, Mary and their children, Christopher and Meagan.
Besides her teaching, reading, taking care of her cats and dogs and most especially spending time with her family and friends were Cathyâ€™s most enjoyed times.
She was a communicant of St. Patrickâ€™s Church in Chateaugay.
Calling hours will be on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Chateaugay Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrickâ€™s Church in Chateaugay, with Rev. Gilbert Menard officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Chateaugay Central School Alumni Fund Scholarship which makes awards to "Cathy's kind of kids."
