Hi Mike and John

I was able to trace Samuel 1825 NY to John and Catherine Caltrider. The family is on the 1850 census 1850 census in ancestry.com as

1850 United States Federal Census
about John Coltrider
Name: John Coltrider
Age: 60
Estimated birth year: abt 1790
Birth Place: Maryland
Gender: Male
Home in 1850 (City,County,State): Green, Wayne, Ohio
Family Number: 120
Household Members:
Name Age
John Coltrider 60
Catherine Coltrider 60
John W Coltrider 27
Samuel Coltrider 25
Caroline Hoffine 20

I found a tree that has Catherine maiden as Dunkel born abt 1790 Berks Co, PA. She died 11 Dec 1850 and is buried in Ohio, memorial on find a grave. I have not been able to trace John back to the Maryland Caltriders.

It appears son John W born abt 1824 in PA married Emaline Bostwick and died in Ohio before 1880 census. He had one son Myron F Caltrider 3 Feb 1854 - 19 Jul 1923. Myron married two Wyantt sisters in Ohio but had no children I could find. As far as I know Myron was John W's only child.

Hope this helps. If you can trace John to a Maryland line please post it. I have another John Kaltreider born abt 1790 living in PA who married Anna Matter that I can not place in any line. Thanks

John I hope you receive this. I just traced Samuel. His father is John Caltrider spelled Coltrider in 1850 census. Samuel and a brother John W born abt 1823 PA are on the 1850 census in Ohio. His mother Catharine abt 1799 PA died 11 Dec 1850 and is buried Ohio. Don't know when John died or is buried. I have Samuel with two wives, all buried Iowa. According to census John was born abt 1790 Maryland and Samuel was born NY. Hope that helps. You can email me at sailore9ret@hotmail.com. I am not a direct relative but trying to tie up some lose ends with Kaltreiders/Caltriders lines

The Samuel I am looking for was born about 1827 in PA, but died in Iowa.

The Rachel Tipton branch is fully researched and not part of my branch. There is a gentleman posting in these threads, Mike Beard that can provide the branch you are interested in.

John

The Samuel Caltrider you refer to, NY 1825, is my father's grandfather. Samuel Caltrider had a brother, John Caltrider - which is the extent I know at the moment of Samuel Caltrider. I know that Samuel and John left NY for Ohio, was there for a couple of years, then Samuel came to Iowa. Samuel married Mary Dohner I believe, she died early, and remarried again to Sarah Leidigh. Samuel and Mary had children, as well as with Sarah. Out of Sarah comes Addis J., Nellie, and Sumner. Sumner is my father's grandfather.

The broken link from Iowa to the rest of the group would be resolved if I found whom Samuel's and John's parents were. I was told that I should look in the John Caltrider and Racheal Tipton branch.

I don't know if this helps at all.

I have also been told that there may have been a Caltrider out of WV that moved to Iowa, but cannot find info on that at the moment.

The only Samuel I have not researched yet is the Samuel P. Caltrider - not sure if that is him or not.

And you are right, no connection has been made from Samuel Caltrider, NY 1825 to the original Johannes Kaltenruetter (Kaltreider), etc.

I am going to continue to map the Iowa Caltriders and then followup with a link to the Ohio Caltriders. Somewhere in there is John Caltrider and his descendants.

Larry (John) Caltrider
Des Moines, Iowa

Hi John,

I see that you're from Iowa. Are you from the line that has been in Iowa for several generations? To date, I don't think anyone has been able to connect the Iowa Caltriders to the rest of the group. I have been told that the first Caltrider in Iowa was Samuel Caltrider, who was born in New York in 1825 I believe. This description doesn't match anyone in the family that I am familiar with. If this is your family, I'd be happy to tell you what I know, but I'm afraid I don't know much. I have been trying to figure this out for 10 years.

Do you have anything additional that may help us figure this out?

Thanks,
Mike Beard
Mason, Michigan

I have a broken link between Samual/Samuel/Sam'l Caltrider/Coltrider, who is my father's great grandfather... and the Samxxx Cxxxxxx's in Maryland, PA, NY. There is no record of the parent's to trace the lineage back further.

Also, I do know that there is an unknown male that came from WV area to the Gutherie/Adair/Casey area with the last name of Caltrider/Coltrider, but it is also elusive as well. Thought it might be Sumner Caltrider. My father's grandfather is Summer. Who knows with all the misreprestations of names, spellings, birthplaces, and dates to avoid one war or another.

If anyone could help, I would be most appreciative.

Thanks.

I know the name is a little different, but I am seeking any information on William Coltriter, born abt 1852 in Maryland. He is listed in the 1860 US Federal Census as residing with Theodore and Susan Massmore in the Manchester District of Carroll Co., MD. He may be the same individual as listed in the 1870 US Federal Census residing with Theodore and Susannah Masemore in Clay Twp., Huntingdon Co., PA, only now using the name William Summer. If Coltriter/Summer are one and the same, he would be my gggrandfather. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Caltrider ancestors: Re: Richard Webster

Richard, I don't have any information on direct ancestors of Eliza Caltrider, but all Caltriders are traced back to a man named John George Peter Kaltenrutter (Mar 3, 1747 - ?). He changed his name to Caltrider in 1783 to avoid being double taxed by Maryland and Pennsylvania. His father is Johannes (Hans) George Kaltenreider. He and his two brothers (Philip Peter) his son (Theobald) came to America from Germany on the ship named "Friendship" on October 12, 1741. They settled in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania (now York County). Hans Georg married Anna Marie Ursula Holtzbaum. I have information on the Caltrider (and spelling variances) family dating back to 1525 in Kertzers, Switerland. If you'd like more information, please post a message or e-mail me at juevosdemuerte@aol.com. I hope this helps.

Mike

Michael, I just came across your message and wonder if my ancestor, Duvald or Dewalt Kaltreider/ Kaltenreider (possibly referred to on the Caltrider Genforum page as Johann Theobald (Duvald) Kaltreider, might be the same as the Theobald you refer to on your message?? I come down by way of Duvald/Elizabeth Catherine ______(unknown maiden name) Kaltreider'/Kaltenreider's daughter, Caterina who married George Petry/Petrie in York Co. Pa.
We know nothing of him or his ancestors and there is a group searching by long distance (I live in California....a many miles from the actual Pa. area) for his ancestors. I am begging any scraps you might have regarding details of these folks, including origins, immigrations (and reasons), relationships, occupations, stories/legends/scandals, war records, religions (I assume German Baptist Brethren from the fact the the decendents of Caterina.....theMiller/Petriy/Stump/Wherlys were a very close knit group of "Dunkards" that included a large group that immigrated to Preble Co. Ohio together in the 1830s) My Stump line is probably Swiss/German in origin. We are disperate for details, especially proofs/documentation. Thanks so much, Ed Stump

Thanks for the information. It appears from the information there may be a link between John George Peter Kaitenrutter (Caltrider) and the Eliza Caltrider that I am looking for ancestor to. If there is probably missing a generation.

I would be interested in obtaining some of the information you have on Caltrider. You can either post a message or e-mail me at dick61947@aol.com

Dick

Hi Zita,

I'm Lisa Caltrider... a relative of some sort! I'm quite new to Ancestry.com, and have not yet done much research or entered any information about my own family. However, I will do my best to get some details online in the near future.

One thing I do know is that my family traces back to George Thomas Caltrider. I also recall some talk about Jacob Kaltrieder who, I just discovered, landed on Ellis Island on October 3, 1913 and established a residence in York, PA.

My father, Gary and his siblings Robert (Bob) and Doris are very interested in tracing our roots. We're having a small family reunion in Mason, MI next week, so I will print off all the information that I can find online. If you have any other details that you would like to share, please feel free! My direct e-mail address is LRenee321@aol.com. Have a nice weekend!

Information please?

I have a little imformation about my husband family. Would love to share it with the rest of the Caltrider's.

The first ancestor I have information on is a man named Samuel Caltrider born in New York about 1827 and married Mary Dohner and had three children. Laura F., Warren A., and Della F.living in Iowa.
Samuel after leaving New York went to Ohio, where I think the children were born, then on to Michigan, and finally settled in Thompson Township,Iowa. Later he remarried-Sarah Leidigh and had an additional three children.
Sumner S., Nellie N. and Addis J.

If this information can be useful to anyone or you have information to help me. Please e-mail back. Thank you.

Dosie?

I don't think Dosie was married to this particular John Veon Caltrider. Dosie Victoria Low married John Veon Caltrider on 2/26/1891. She was the daughter of Theodore Harvey Low and Sarah Brown. This John had a brother named Charles. Do you know who the parents of John Veon Caltrider were?
