My name is Les Goldberg. I live in Maryland, USA. I am looking for information on my mother’s family – Calver. My great grandfather was John William Calver – born 1835 in Scotland and died in 1896 in Port Perry, Ontario - Canada. His father was Charles Calver born ~ 1803. I believe John’s mother was Mary Jobson born 1807.
Any information would be appreciated.
Calver Family - Essex

I'm looking for any members of the Calver family in Essex. There are links to the surnames Rumble, Buswell, Passfield, Thurgood and Bunton, all in the Essex area.

My gUncle William Calver died aged 34. during his life he married Winifred who gave birth to a still born child named Barry. Following the death of William it seems she moved to the Isle of Wight where she died in 1993.

My Grandfather is Reginald S Calver who was the youngest of 13 children. My Grandmother was Kathleen Doheny who was born in Kilkenny, Ireland.

If anyone has any information i'd greatly appreciate it.

Steve, My Calvers were in Banham, Norfolk since at least 1735 (based on Parish records). There are numerous descendants of Robert Calver (1816, Banham) and Henry Calver (1848, Banham)now living in the US in Ohio, New Jersey, Washington DC and Massachusetts. I am very interested in learning more about the Calvers from Derbyshire who moved to Suffolk and tying the family history together.

Any and all info is of interest.
Barbara McDonald

I am trying to find out about my great great aunt Ellen, b. 1891 in Mildenhall, Suffolk to Charles and Mary Calver. Mary (Dedman) died and Charles married Charlotte Thompson. When Charles died in 1901, Ellen and my grandmother, Alice Phoebe, were separated and sent to live with relatives. My grandmother went to live with an uncle in Burton on Trent, but I don't know what happened to Ellen. I would appreciate any information.

Carole Harper

Steve, thanks for replying to my message.

You can find out whether we share 19th century links at the LostCousins site - my 19th century Calver relatives have been entered there, and many of my Calver cousins are members. If there are any connections we'll be matched automatically.

I was interested to hear your story about the name having come from Derbyshire (there's a lovely photo of me posing in front of the village sign, so I hope it is true!). Whilst some of the books on surnames have linked the surname with the village I've never before seen an explanation of how it got from Derbyshire to Suffolk, and so have tended to go along with the alternative theory that it comes from the Suffolk word for a small hill on which cattle graze.

Hope to hear from you soon,

Peter

The Calver family is very extensive in Suffolk as you probably know. I have records for the area described, what names do you have for the 19th century.

You are also probably aware that we are descended from one family that moved to Suffolk in the 13th century from Derbyshire having taken their name from the village near Derbyshire
Best regards
Steve Calver.

As far as I know, Lindsey was the only one of Charles' children to return to North America and he, with his entire family, settled in the Hamilton, Ontario area. According to burial records, my grandmother, Lottie, was the only daughter to marry. George and William both married but only William had children. His children are still in the Hamilton, Burlington area of Ontario.

Thank you for the offer. My Calvers seem to be centered around Essex.

My g g grandfather was Arthur Calver, born abt. 1843 in Colchester. He became a teacher in the West Ham area of London, living in Forest Gate and was also a big noise in the Masonic world.

His father was James Miller Calver, born abt. 1815, also in Colchester and was a carver and gilder.

James Miller Calver married Mary Ann Page 6th October 1836 at Holy Trinity, Colchester. The marriage certificate gives his father's name as James and his occupation as Publican.

He had 2 other sons, James William (b. abt 1839, also a carver and gilder) and Thomas (b. abt 1840, who became a printer).

If any of this rings bells with your other Calver contacts, please feel free to put them in touch and give them any information I have.

Regards,
Piers Forrest.

I am looking for information on an Annie Amelia Stangroom. She married a Robert Brown (a sweet manufacturer) but we cannot find a wedding certificate. My Grandfather Bertie Oxley Brown was born 30th May 1913 and was her son. We have found his birth certificate where her surname is stated as 'CALVER' but my Grandfather always gave her maiden name as 'Stangroom' and we have found some of his brothers birth certficates where her name is listed as Stangroom. We have a death certficate for her: she died 19th Jan 1951 in Great Yarmouth.
Calver - Great Barton & Fornham St Martin

I am interested in contacting anyone else who is researching the Calver family who lived near Bury St Edmunds during the 19th century (and earlier) in the parishes of Great Barton and Fornham St Martin. I also have some research into the Calver family of nearby Stanton and Pakenham, although I have yet to find any connection with my branch of the family. Thanks!
