Hi
I have been researching William Ewing and Rhoda Craig Calvin and their family. They were my great great grandparents. Their Son Francis (Frank) was my great grandfather. While researching I have found that Lavina Calvin was with William and Rhoda in the 1950 census. They have missed spelled the last name but I'm sure its the same family. I'm not sure of the relationship between Lavina and William and Rhoda though. Also I'm wondering if your Thomas and William were brothers. I know William was born in Virginia around 1823 and was married in Champaign County Ohio. I'm sorry I haven't been anymore help. Nothing I have is concrete but a hunch. Linda

I believe so, but don't know how. I did know that Lavenia was in William E. Calvin's household in 1850. Interestingly enough, William E. Calvin's household, and Thomas, James, and Lavenia were all in the general vicinity of Chillicothe, IL in 1860, but by that time Lavenia was living with James and Thomas. By 1870, Lavenia had married Charles Groom and was again living in the general vicinity of Thomas Calvin and his family. Charles Groom is even recorded in the probate records following Thomas's death as he purchased a 1/2 interest in a hay rake. I'd be willing to bet he owned the other interest already. All of the evidence adds up to a close relation.

Could they be the same William and Rhonda in 1850 census in Morefield, Clark, Ohio

I was trying to construct a Calvin family with Thomas A. Calvin who lived in Peoria also. In 1860 Lavenia is living with Thomas but I found her with William and Rhoda in 1850.

Could they be relatives?

Claude W. Calvin's "Calvin Families" includes him as probably a son of a Huguenot immigrant to NJ. If you or your local library have a subscription to HeritageQuest Online, you can download or read online this whole book and its discussion of the NJ Calvins. Click on "Search Books" then "People" and enter "Claude Calvin" in the search box. There are reportedly many errors in the book but it might be a good background.

All the information that I have that comes from a great granddaughter is that he emigrated to the United States from either France or England. Anyone have any insight

Calvins in Ohio/Penn 1820-1940

I'm looking for information on my great, great grandfather, Wendel Calvin born around 1825. At times he is listed as Wendel and at other times he is listed as Vander Calvin on records. Wendel/Vander was born in Penn, and resided in Cincinnati from 1864 (perhaps earlier) until his death in 1900. I believe he was married twice; his second wife was Catherine Whitehead, listed as Catherine Weiskopf in records from the First German Baptist Church in Pittsburgh. His first wife may have also been named Catherine. Several members of the family are buried at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati. Wendel/Vander had the following children: Emma (1857-1864), Emma (1864-1866), William Lee (1868-?), Caroline (1870-1871), Joseph M (1872-?), Edward E (1874-1948), John (1876-?), Isabella (1878-?) and Eugenia (1881-?). Wendel/Vander may have had brothers Andrew and Joseph also residing in Cincinnati. By 1907 son Joseph M and wife Mary E Calvin, as well as widow Catherine were living in Pittsburgh. Later the widow Catherine lived with daughter Isabel who was married to John Thompson and later to Thomas Moss.

I would like to find parents and siblings of Wendel/Vander Calvin and birth information. I would also like to find a death record for Joseph M Calvin, my great grandfather. I know he died between the 1930 census and 1935. He worked for B&O Railroad and may have died while working as a conductor. So I don't know if he was in Penn or somewhere else.

I am looking for information about Joseph M (Monroe?) Calvin. The earliest information I've found is his marriage to Mary E Boynton in Nov 1897. He was born about 1872. He died between 1930 and 1935. Joseph and Mary Calvin had two daughters, Catherine (1899) and Hedges (about 1901). By 1910 the family was living in Pittsburgh and Joseph worked for the railroad. I would like to find birth and death dates and place; parents of Joseph; and any siblings.

Christine - I have no record that James ever served in the Rev. War. He would have been a little too young, I think. But his father, James Calvin, Sr., did do milita duty. James Sr. was on the milita rolls for E. Nottingham Twp. Chester Co., PA in 1778 as a private and also in adjoining Lancaster Co., PA, he was a private in the 6th Co., 6th Battalion of the militia in 1780 and May of 1781 and 1782. I'm not related to this family. I just research all families surnamed Calvin and Colvin and have done so since 1988. Thanks for the correct spelling of Katherine's maiden name.
I have records of a James Calvin who died 1846 in Crawford Co., PA but my records do not show him born ca 1767 in Somerset, PA - more likely ca 1764 in Chester Co., PA. I do show that he had one descendant named Leonard F. Calvin b. 12 Mar 1890; marr. 1912 Katherine Baltz. I don't know if this is your "Lenard" Calvin as you didn't give us any information about him.

Marilyn

Yes, that could well be your John Calvin in the 1930 CA census. Hard to say for certain though.

One big problem - in the 1870s in almost all states in this country, it was illegal for a Caucasian to marry a non-Caucasian. That's not to say that Caucasian males and non-Caucasian females didn't form an alliance, live together as though they were legally married, and produce children because that did happen. However, that might not be the case in your situation. If John was raised only by his Indian mother, then he might have been recorded by an Indian given name, etc.

The only other thing for which I have a record is from the Dawes Rolls - enrollment cards dated 1898 to 1914. Very scant information but it does list this under Cherokee:
John W. Calvin; male; enrollmente type; parent; card 11023.

Believe these cards are available for viewing at the South West Branch of the National Archives at Fort Worth, TX. I don't know if there is additional info on this particular person and card such as an age, percentage of Indian blood, and so forth. I have no idea if the above John W. Calvin has anything to do with your John Calvin or not.

Did you find a marriage for John in Oklahoma? If you found that you can see what year it was and you can look for them on a census. It is true that the census takers often made assumptions based on looks and sometimes the neighbors gave the information if the family wasn't home. My husband's grandmother and siblings are listed as Cherokee/Mixed as adults on ONE census but their is no proof whatsoever and they were listed as white other times. Their parents were always listed as white. Living in Oklahoma I often see that and everyone says they have Native American ancestry. You really have to have a relative with a roll number that kept it going from generation to generation to be sure unless you get really lucky and can find them when they had their Indian names and white names listed. If you can find the names then you can look on the final rolls.

What I found of John Calvin in the 1930 Census was somewhat speculative, as the age is just slightly off but I "think" he was in California at that point:
California > Placer > Township 9 > District 18 > 4

I may have been unclear in what I meant about the ancestry, as I was speculating that John's mother was Cherokee and his father "white," as it was John's mother who was born in Oklahoma and his father in Pennsylvania. I knew that Grace was "white" from family knowledge.

My mother knew that there was some Native American ancestry on her side of the family, she just didn't know that it was as near as her own mother being listed as Mixed Blood Cherokee.

I understand what you mean about census takers speculating on race by appearance. I think that it may have been noticed and properly noted in the 1930 census because they were in the Yakima, Washington, area and that area has many Native peoples due to the tribes in the region so the question was probably asked more often or the census takers more aware of Native peoples.

I find family history fascinating because I know so little of my own. It doesn't help that not very much was passed down through family story-telling.

I would love to be able to find out who exactly John was, and who his parents were, all that good stuff.

I've been looking over your Calvin problem today and I have a few comments to make. First, in the 1930 census, it looks to me like the place of birth for the two children, Sam and Anna Calvin, is shown as "Cherokee/mixed" and the race of the children is shown as "Ind." So it would be their father who was of mixed race.

In the 1920 census of Yakima Co., WA, John, Grace [wife], M. Carry [dau] age 7 b. OR and Sammie [son] age 5 b. OR, are all shown as "white" but I believe census takers often made a judgment about race based on the skin coloring of persons. Since Grace was John's wife in 1920, and in 1930, the remarried Grace [to Harold Walters] lists Sam and Anna C. as Harold's stepson and stepdaughter, that must mean that it wasn't Grace who was of mixed ancestry and if she's the mother of both Sam and Anna, then John didn't have a previous wife of mixed ancestry. Also in 1930, Grace had a son by her 2nd husband, Harold J. Walters, aged 1 yr. and some months and he's not shown as Indian so it can't be Grace whose of mixed ancestry.

You seemed to indicate you found John Calvin in the 1930 census. Or am I mistaken! I certainly couldn't find him in any census except the 1920 and that wasn't for lack of trying!

Marilyn
lynden@goldrush.com

Anna Katherine's mother was Grace. I don't know for sure her surname, but the searching of done with the bits and pieces I do have lead me to believe her maiden name was likely Shintaffer but that she was married @ 16 to someone surnamed Lee before marrying John Calvin who was about 20 years her senior. They had three children.

The link you included gave an "expired results" message.

Thanks for your help.

Help/Advice?

I am a beginner at the genealogy thing, and I can use some advice.

On my mother's side of the family I've had some trouble tracing back and if anyone has any advice that might be able to point me in the right direction it would be helpful.

Mother maternal grandmother's maiden name was Calvin (Anna Katherine), born in Jackson County, Oregon around 1923. Her father (as evidenced by Census records from 1920 and 1930) was named John Calvin. He was born around 1871 in Oklahoma. His mother was also born in Oklahoma, his father in Pennsylvania.

The 1930 Census shows Anna Katherine as being "Cherokee--mixed blood" and her mother was white, so I suspect that John's father was possibly married to a Cherokee woman in Oklahoma.

With John Calvin being a relatively common name, does anyone have any suggestions on how I might trace back because I know NOTHING about his family of origin other than the birth places of his mother and father. And with Oklahoma not being a state when he was born it's not well recorded in the Census.

Thanks!

Well since I was on the Calvin side, I don't know too many of the Hiltbrands, except Bob and Maxine, Walt's children and my first cousins. I just saw Bob Hiltbrand yesterday at my Aunt Bertha's memorial service. Bertha was Arlene and my mother's sister, passed away at 97.

Bob did tell me that his Uncle Bill died on Christmas morning. Bill was Walt's brother and since he was single, often attended Calvin family get togethers with Walt and Arlene's family, so we all knew him.

With your permission I could forward your comments and e-mail address to Bob, so he could contact you if he wants to. He has not been working on genealogy, and doesn't have subscription to Ancestry.

Ken Holloway
Has any descendant of Jonathan Dilley Calvin and Mary Griggs, who moved from Sussex Co., NJ to Martin Co., IN around 1845, ever seen or heard anything in a letter, diary, court document, oral tradition, etc. to suggest that the youngest son of their daughter, Sarah G. Calvin, was not the son of her husband, Erwin J. Moberly? That Sarah had an affair? Or maybe that the youngest son was born more than 9 months after her husband's death (Jul 1872)? Rumors? Suspicions? Anything of that sort???

It's very important to me, as the results a y-DNA test do not match the Moberly surname, but Hampton and Hollingsworth instead, and I need to know if the non-paternity event happened with the birth of my great-grandfather or in prior generations.

Carol Anne
