Re: re-knowing about Camacho history

Well, in the first place, I want to apologize for this late, very very late, reply Pascual... it's just a mere 'I-dunno-what' that I happen to take a look at your post... I can't believe it's been 10 years already...

Now, as I believe you certainly read my post regarding the Camacho surname roots in America ( http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.camacho/3/mb.ashx ) all I can add here is that 'el capitan Pedro Camacho' is to be considered the first registered account of a Camacho in The Americas, or at least, the only one I've found up til now. Hugh Thomas' book briefly details some of the activities Pedro Camacho was involved in shortly before and during "La Conquista", but that was pretty much it regarding his story.

Last but not least, I'm sharing a link to the book I'm referring to:

http://amzn.com/0671511041

My name is Tony.
I am also a Camacho.
I am also struggling for information.
My grandfather, called John, and grandmother, called Mary, immigrated from Madeira about 1900 and settled in Cape Town with two daughters Mary and Alice. My father Edward was born in Cape Town in 1909. The names I have mentioned are most likely anglicised versions of the given names.
If your family are from Cape Town then there is surely a connection!

Hi Nicki,

I am also named Camacho and what I heard is the following (I cannot guarantee the historical rigour of this, but it seems quite plausible and to fit well with some other stuff I've been reading). A long time ago, when two Portuguese navigators named João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira reached Madeira (1418-1420) the King of Portugal decided to populate the islands. Apparently, not enough noblemen were available, in Portugal, to move there even when being promised land and titles (the Portuguese expansion was just in the beginning, so they were probably not used yet to emigrate). Hence, at a certain point a (supposedly noble) family from Southern Spain (from the Kingdom of Valencia), the Camachos, settled in Madeira and helped populating the islands.

Still today, there are many Camacho's in Madeira islands, not so many in mainland Portugal and several across the Hispanic world...

I think that half of my great grandfathers were also born in Madeira somewhere in the late 1800's to early 1900's, my grandfather was called João Camacho and was also born in Madeira around 1920. He then moved to Angola, where he lived until the early 1970's. Due to the dangers and tragedy of Colonial Portuguese war, my family returned to Portugal about that time. I was born in Portugal in 1977.

Cheers,

Nuno

Cheers,

Nuno
