I hope you do. Here is a document I came across today. It called my attention because somehow one of the Camaras in Añasco, Puerto Rico married a daughter of my great grandmother. In this document it says the Francisco Camara came directly from Africa but it doesn't say what part of Africa. He was born in about 1796. You and I might be related if your relatives come from Añasco.

Also the dates they left and where theywent to (usually back to Spain) Manuel Camara's name is there but thre is a question mark about the date he left and the country he went to is Argentina. That's all I can find out.

Hey there fellow researchers! I've been doing a little genealogical research on all my grandparents and wanted to know if anyone had any information on Camara's who migrated to Belize, Central America? My mother's maiden name is Camara and her father is Crescencio Camara. I found my grandfather's birth certificate and his father's name was Miguel Camara, but that's all the info I've found. I was told he was from Spain but I would like to find more information about him.

Re: Camara Surname - Mali, Africa

Jessica, I would like to correct you if you don't mind. The Camara family of Mali [West Africa] did not come from Portugal. This family has existed long before the Portuguese even step a foot on African soil in the 15th century. The family were among the clans of ancient Mali that formed an oath of alligiance with other noble clans of Mali to succeed the ancient Wagadou Empire of the Ghana which has fallen in the 11th century. Long before Mali's dominance during the reign of Sunja in 13th century. Even longer than that, they were among the notable families of Mali during the Wagadou Empire what some people call the Ghana Empire. Now, in the late 15th century when the Portuguese arrived, some African prince accompanied the Portuguese missionaries to Portugal, not as slaves but as Ambassadors or to seek the assistance of King Joao of Portugal to help them dethrone the reigning Kings of their State. These people did return to their own countries and were not captured as slaves. It was a political crisis at that time in Western Africa. One of my ancestral cousin was among those group of Africans that went to Portugal in order to dethrone my ancestor. His arrival was a big news in Portugal at that time especially with his traditional attire and wearing gold from head to toe [the West African fashion of the day]. The Porguese king did give him assistance by giving him an army. The Portuguese army's brief was to dethrone my ancestor and replace him with my ancestral cousin.
Further, they would also build a fort in order to protect their interest. The king of Portugal appointed his best man as my ancestral cousin's protector and the head of the army. His name was Pero Vas De Cunha. Not only did my cousin exchange gifts with king Joao, he also gave him senstive information about Mali's gold reserves. Although he was not from Mali himself and nor was he from the Camara Clan, Mali at that time although declining was trying to hold on to its Empire - what is left of it. It was because of that new piece of information between my cousin and the king of Portugal which led the king of Portugal to send the first Portuguese Embassaries to Mali in 1490 under Rodrigo Rabello, Pero Reinel and Joas Collaso. When my cousin returned home with his Portugese army, the Portuguese were defeated in battle partly due to my cousin who doubled crossed them. He himself was assassinated by Pero Vas De Cunha the very man who was assigned as his protector. Pero Vas De Cunha's army returned home without achiving nothing.

Sometimes certain names [from two different parts of the world] do occur which has no relation to each other.

No, I am waiting for a letter from my grandmother. She might have more information because her and my grandfather, Alfred Camara Sr, would go and visit his mother, Georgianne on Long Island. Most of the information that I have so far is from my dad, Alfred Camara Jr. My dad says that he doesn't remember my great grandfather and couldn't supply me with a name or origin of Portugal. I am doing this tracking out of curiosity and the fact that ,genetically, my side of the Camara family line ends with me. My dad was the only son of my grandparents and I am the only child of my dad. Being the girl, I can't pass my genetic line purely. I have one son and talked my husband into letting me add my last name to his as a hyphen just to keep the Camara name going.

Thanks for replying

Re: O nome Camara

My maternal grandmother's father Antonio da Camara was a filho do "paes incognitos." That term appeared on his marriage record to Antonia Rosa de Freitas, filha da Francisco de Freitas and Alexandrina Rosa, as well as the birth record of my maternal grandmother, "neta paternal da paes incognitos.". It is my understand that the term means "unknown parents." Antonio was raised in the Estreito da Calheta,Madeira, by " a good family," assigned by the concelho/township. Our USA term would be " a ward of the court." I've been told it is next to impossible to trace his ancestry, which is a very sad situation, due in part to all the lost ancestors from my 4th generation on, from this line.
With the onset on YDNA testing, for years I have tried to locate my grandma Julia's brother's family. Antonio Camara de Freitas born 03 Nov 1873 Calheta, Madeira married (June 4, 1900) to Maria Henriqueta da Silva born abt. 1879.
Their children are Manuel de Freitas b. 28 Feb 1904; Maria de Freitas b. 01 Feb 1905 and Margaretta de Freitas b. 10 June 1907; all from the Calheta. In order to "zero in,' (hopefully) on the "paes incognitos," line I need to locate the male off springs of the child Manuel de Freitas. I realize the YDNA testing will not produce the loss names of these ancestors, but at least it will place this line in a haplogroup, along with/or without mutations, helping to link with others worldwide.
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Pat Silva Corbera
aka: papagaia (os papagaios is our family alcunha).

Jeff Camara is my cousin. I have just seen your inquery. In Portugal back in the 19th - 20th century, DaCamara "Camara" is a name they gave to orphaned children who do not have names. This might explain your question about the orphanage.
Contact me any time. Joe Camara Jr.

An addendum...have been researching Madeira records for almost a year now. A great many people born of the Camara surname will have parents (or grandparents) that are incognito (unknown). This was the case with my grandfather...thus I cannot trace that line any further. I believe that any Camara told the "orphanage" story will come to find its truth in the records.

They used to visit my mother and father, Joseph and Alice Buckley, I have two sisters who are about the same age as the boys Elanie and Joan. I belive two of the other boys names were Enrique and Ignasius. If anyone could give me information I would be very grateful. I think Manuel may have gone on to Barnet in London and become a stonemason.

The Camara name

The Camara Family name is the name of a great and important family. It has nothing to do with orphans. Here it goes:

João Gonçalves Zarco Discovered the island of Madeira in the begining of 15th century. He arrived at this Island in an area with great abundance of Sea wolfs, and named this place "Camara de Lobos". Camara means a kind of "big room".
Although his name had no Camara in it, all his descendents, as it was used in those days, took the name of "da Camara".

You can find part of the descendents of João Gonçalo Zarco tree in www.ancestry.com.

If you want a more complete tree, go for
the new page www.genealogia.sapo.pt and find the family da Camara

Enjoy

O nome Camara

Caro Marco

I'm very much sure that your father is, this time, wrong. Camara is the name that the descendents of João Gonçalves Zarco, who discoverd the MADEIRA island, took. Camara as short for Camara de Lobos. This in the old days mean that they were the lords of Camara de Lobos.
You can see exactly this by looking into the Camara family tree. Try "Camara" or "da Camara" or Zarco at www.ancestry.com and/or www.genealogia.sapo.pt

Therefore your family name has a much glorious past (see the family tree) than what you could imagine.

Be proud

João António da Costa Maya

Our grandparents also came from Madeira between 1910 and 1913...they first settled in New Bedford. None of your names are familiar to me at this time though. I have not found any Pestanos in our history up till now. Did anyone in your Camara side ever mention anything about an orphanage? We have found many of the Camaras (all are da Camaras in the original records) to have parents that are "incognito", and our parents did say that their name came from an orphanage at one time. Most of our Camara side appears to have come from Santa Cruz, Madeira. Siblings of our Uncle Joe were Manuel, Al, John, Theodore (all born in Madeira), & Tony, Marie and Dee all born in New Bedford. His parents were Manuel Egydio Camara and Christina de Jesus.
