Finding living relatives in Sicily

I am traveling to Sicily in May and am interested in finding out if I have any living relatives in Castallamare Del Golfo. My maternal grandmother's maiden name was Angela Cacioppo. She moved to New York City in the early 1900's but for many years sent money and letters to a niece that was left behind. Any info would be appreciated.

The only information I was able to find for your great grandmother was her passenger log from when she arrived in Manhattan with her children.

http://search.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbid...#

My family also came from Castellammare to Manhattan around that time and later moved to Brooklyn. There are only seven Camardas in Castellammare now, so it seems as though they are a small family and it is very likely that we are related. However, I wasn't able to find any proof.

A decade later, they would ask for information on who you were going to live with, as well as who your next of kin was back in your old country. However, when Dora came to NY, they only asked who was sponsoring her, and she answered her husband and his address in Manhattan. Not very helpful, I'm afraid.

My Great Grandmother's name was Dorotea (my Mom refers to her as Dora) Camarda Criscenti, they lived in either the Bronx or brooklyn. I have been trying to find which cemetery she is buried in, the problem is I have no information (birth, death dates). I have a very strong feeling they are in Calvery Cemetery in Brooklyn. According to an old family member. I need the date of death to look her up according to the office at Calvery. Her husbands name was Diego Criscenti. They came here from Castellamare Italy.

Any information you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Doreen Cammarata-Gilhuly

My great grandmother Pasqua "Esther" Camarda emigrated to the United States in 1910 with her husband Antonio Asaro and several small children. Her father's name was Giuseppe and her mother's name was Francesca.

She had two older brothers named Pietro and Antonio and possibly a younger sister named Maria.

Pietro and Antonio lived together in Manhattan with their families in 1920. Pasqua, her husband, and her children lived next door with their elderly mother. By 1930, the three Camarda children and their families split up and moved their separate ways.

Pietro married Anna and had two sons (Anthony, Andrew) and a daughter (Frances).

Antonio married Rosa and had three daughters (Francesca, Josephine, Angelina) and a son (Anthony, Jr.)

Any relation, per chance?

Hi Nancy, I've been trying to do more research in my family and I thought you might be interested- I've found some more Santaromita's - a Cono Santaromita also from Naso, born around 1915. I'm thinking this might be Angela's brother and possibly my great great great great grandfather! its difficult because the trail ends after his sons (Giuseppe and Anotonino?), so there are a few missing links. Thanks for your help and good luck with your searching!!

Hi Jessica , long time since I checked the Camarda message board . I am down under in Australia . Yes Santaromita is a quite uncommon surname and you would think easy to trace , not so . My gg grandfather Vincenzo Miragliotta married Angela Santaromita they were born abt 1810 Naso province of Messina Sicily , the parents of my Great grandfather Salvatore Miragliotta born Naso abt 1830 he died at Capo D'Orlando he married Rosaria Camarda . The one and only Santaromita family in WA are related to my late father the head of the family was Luigi Santaromita he died about 3 years ago . Luigi was married to Maria Camarda deceased also related to me through Rosaria Camarda .
That is about as much as I know .
Regards Nancy

I know very little about my family history but I do know my grandparents were born in New York (Brooklyn), and my grandfather's name was Nathan Santaromita. His family was from Sicily, I think from Palermo. I thought maybe we were related since Santaromita is such an uncommon name, so if you know anything about that side of your family I would be very interested in learning more!
Scamardi/Scamardo derived from Camardo/Camardi?

I've been trying to find info on my family history, so far I know that the Scamardi family lived in Poggioreale, Sicily before emigrating to Texas at the turn of the century where it was then changed to Scamardo. Since Camarda, is a cognome derived from a place name in Italy I'm thinking thats where Scamardi evolved from. Anyways, if anybody has any thoughts, evidence supporting or negating that please let me know.

There are Camarda's in the San Jose/San Francisco area. I know we are related to Camarda' s in Southern California as well. My great grandfather was Joseph Camarda and his wife was Rose Camarda. When my parents were in Sicily visiting in April they discovered he had a twin sister. We think her name was Josephine. He had several other brothers and sisters who may have come to the United States and settled on the East Coast. I can get that information from my grandfather if you are interested.

I don't know if I can provide to much information about the Comardo Family except that Josephine Frocchi was the Sister of my Father Carlo Frocchi . The Frocchi family as well as the Camardo family all resided in Cuylerville, New York which is just about 2 miles outside of Mt Morris N.Y and about the same distance from Geneseo, New York. I lost contact with the Camardo family when I left that area to be in the Military (Career) I understand that there are still Camordos located in some of the sorounding towns located in the same area. This has been an interesting discovery for me.

camarda information

My grandfather was Louis Camarda, Valguarnera, Sicily, Province of Enna (name misspelled upon U.S. entry to Comardo). He was married to Josephine Frocchi, also from Valguarnera, after arriving in the states. He had two brothers who also settled in the Rochester, NY - Mt Morris - Genesee Valley area, Ralph (Rafael) Camarda and Anthony (Antoni)Camardo. Their mother was named Michaela Damiano and they had a sister who remained with their mother in Sicily. Their father died when they were young and we do not know his name. My grandfather told the story that the Camarda's (his grandfather) was from Spain and that they were not Italians or Scilians. That there were three brothers, from a wealthy house of spain (there is a Casa Camarda on the tour's of castles in Spain) that were sent out to three different countries - one being Sicily. My grandfather was born around the 1880's and died in the 1960's in his mid 80's. He and my grandmother had 6 children. My father, Felix and his siblings Dominic, Margaret, Frank, Philip and Geraldine.

There is more info but I have to check to make sure I have it accurate.

If anyone has any info on the origins of our branch of the Camarda's or any other information, it would be appreciated.
