Camber Upper State New York American Revolution

I am seeking information about Camber family who lived in Upper state New York during American revolution. They were loyalists and left for Canada right after the revolution. They then lived in New Brunswick. I can get back to 1843 and James Camber who was a farmer.

I am descended from Samuel Brown (b. abt 1795, poss. Connecticut), who was apparently granted a homestead on Lake Memphremagog in Stanstead County, Quebec, in the early 19th Century (poss. circa 1815-1820). As I understand it, he tried farming there, and when he was unsuccessful at that, he moved to Massachussets circa 1840s where his son or sons worked in the mills there before the sons moved to Wisconsin to get their own homesteads for farming.

His wife’s name was Polly, but I don't know her maiden name.

Samuel and Polly had at least four children in Canada:

Samuel C. Brown (b. 1819 in Stanstead Co. m. Betsy T Merrill in Abbotsford, Quebec 5 Jul 1841)
Harriet/Rectina (these may have been separate sisters) (b. abt 1822 in Stanstead Co.) - m. James Covey in Stanstead Co. abt 1840)
Asahel Brown (b. 1827/8 in Stanstead Co d. 1902 Wisconsin.)
Francis S. Brown (b. 1830 in Stanstead Co. d. 1913 Wisconsin)

There may have been a daughter, Eleanor Butler Brown, (b. abt Mar. 1818-20 in Stanstead Co. m. Josiah Robbins in Wisconsin).

To the extent that they were affiliated with a church, I believe they were Methodist Episcopal.

I am quite intrigued by the information you have posted, and I would like to correspond with you and anyone on this thread who knows more about Polly or who would like to discuss her. I have compiled a relatively extensive tree of Samuel and Polly's son Asahel's descendants.

I am really looking forward to hearing from you!
GREAT! So one mystery has been solved. I will email you what I have on the family of John Henry Camber and Heborah (Debra) Data, as well as, the family of Henry Smith Camber. The Camber family removed from Stratford, Vermont to Stanstead, Quebec in about 1800. I would look for the Data family in Orange County, they were not found, by me, in Jay or Derby. My great-great-great grandmother Polly M. Camber (her name may have been Mary) lived in the Derby/Jay areas, at least for the last 15-20 years of her life. She was married to a Brown, so if you find anything in property records about what Brown or Place she was married to I would appreciate learning about it. My great-great grandfather was Benjamin Place, Polly's son, and his father was supposed to be one Stephen Place, however, no one has been able to identify him. She had a farm in Jay that she deeded to Benjamin, so maybe the property records will show who she received it from. I think many of the Cambers may have went to her home to be married.
Due to family health matters it will be a little while before I can get the Camber info to you. I will work on it as time allows.

Thanks for the info on Grace Camber. I stopped by the Sutton, Vermont Town Clerks Office today and obtained a copy of her marriage certificate. Amasa H. Camber is listed as her father and Elizabeth E. Smith as her mother (born in Yorkshire, England). At the time of her marriage - her age was listed as 18. I would appreciate it if you could email me (maybe with an attachment) on Amasa Cambers family. I plan on visiting Jay and Derby Vermont in the near future to research Debra/Heborah Data. Will let you know the outcome. If this info is already available - could you point me in the right direction as to accessing it? Appreciate your help.

All I can tell you is there was not another Camber man living in Quebec at the time of your gr-gr-gr grandfather's birth other than John Henry Camber and his wife Debra or Heborah Data. Furthermore, there does not appear to have been a Elmbre Camber. There was Amasa Camber, son of Henry Smith Camber, son of John henry Camber, who had a daughter named Grace, born in Georgeville, Quebec and data shows she married Alpha Willard Quimby in Sutton, Vt., which is where many from Stanstead, Que., went to be married. The fact the date of birth for Grace differs is not uncommon since often the reporting of a birth was not done until someone made it into the township to record the birth. Amasa Camber self reported the birth of several of his children.
To try and clarify this confusion you could check property records since the legal name will be used in these documents. Also, what was the date of birth given for Grace on her marriage record, and on her death record? Usually both give the parents names but often nicknames were used instead of the legal name. In one instance she would have been 24 when she married and in the other 18, which given the social climate of the day age 18 seems more plausible. I am inclined to believe both Elmbre and Augie are nicknames but haven't a clue how such would have came about.
Should you find anything about Debra Data, or Heborah Data I would like to know, also, anything you find about the Camber's you seek to gain information on.

Grace married my grandfather Alpha Willard Quimby on 08 July 1909 in Sutton, Vermont. Only two childred. My father Maurice Henry Quimby born 27 Mar 1910, died 19 Mar 2001. Camilla Ruth Quimby born 08 May 1911, died same day.
Grace died 06 Aug 1911. Alpha married Glennie May Smith 06 Jun 1914. I'll try to fit the Camber info in. Wish me luck.

Re: Loyalists

You probably know Polly M. Camber was the dau of John Henry Camber and Heborah Data (Polly's cemetery record gives her mother as Debra Data). I have not found any record wherein Polly ever used Polly Place as her name. I also doubt she was married to Stephen Place originally from RI. However, he still could have been the father of Benjamin Place, b: 10 Sep 1809, if Stephen Place of RI is the Stephen Place born in USA and was living in East Bolton Quebec.
Now, that being said Polly M. Camber did marry at sometime Unk Brown, and went for the most part by the name Mary Brown. Maybe her middle name was Mary. If you have access to the property records for Jay, Vermont, Orleans County you should be able to find out the name of Unk Brown she was married to, if not, it should indicate how she came to own the farm where Benjmain Sr. and Phebe Place lived in Jay and raised their children. Polly willed the farm to Benjamin Place, her natural son, in 1858, her name on the deed at that time was Polly Camber Brown. Unk Brown must not have been living because she was to live with Benjamin for the remainder of her life in exchange for the farm, and she did live with him, in fact, she outlived Phebe. to have this farm she had to have inherited it from a husband. This is the farm where Guy Butler Place lived later. Records should give data on how and who Polly received the farm from.
I do not think Polly had any children other than Benjamin.
Let me know if you find how she came to own the farm.

I think you may have confused some data. Polly M. Camber may have married Stephen Place, however, I doubt it. Stephen Place, of East Bolton, Quebec, probably was the son of Elder Stephen Place of RI and Springfield, VT, however, he was married and had several children by the time Polly Camber was 15-16 years old. His wife died in the early 1830's and he married Hannah Magoon Randall and had several more sons. I do think this Stephen Place probably fathered Polly Camber's child, Benjamin Place, but all I have ever found was the fact Benjamin was born 10 sep 1809, in Potton, and his father's name was Stephen Place.
Polly Camber married a Brown, probably from Stanstead, Que., and thereafter often went by the name Mary Brown, in abt. 1858, she deeded her farm in Jay, VT., to Benjamin and lived with him until her death. She died in 1877 and is buried in Jay. I haven't been able to identify the Brown person she married. If you have access to property records for Orleans County Vermont this person would surely be named since Polly had to inherit from him. Yet, I have an interest in the Stephen Place who is shown as born in England, and died in Salem, VT.
All of the children you have named are likely those born to Stephen Place and his first wife. Stephen died in the 1860's in Brome County, however, I have not located his nor his first wife's burial sites.
The farm Polly Camber owned and Benjamin Place, her son, inherited was later the farm of Guy Butler Place. He called it the original family homestead.

I am researching the New Brunswick Cambers who seem to be descended from an original Loyalist. Thank you.

You're right; we are indeed searching the same family tree. Your great-grandfather, Edward Footman Ward (b. 26 Jan 1847) was the oldest child of Benjamin Habersham Ward (b. 10 Mar 1818) and his wife, Jane Rebecca Mills (b. 4 Aug 1826). The above Benjamin Habersham Ward was the only son of Benjamin Ward (b. 1770) and his wife, Ann Habersham (b. 17 Dec 1783). Edward Footman Ward married Ella L. Turner on 5 May 1868 in Jefferson County, Florida. Edward is listed as a four year old child on the 1850 U. S. Census for Jefferson County, FL, in the household of his parents, B. H. and Jane R. Ward. Also included in the household is one other child, Ann Ward, age 6 months. Hope this helps you some. I will be in touch.

I believe we are researching the same family tree. I have been trying to find the link between the Habersham family and Edward Footman Ward. Ann Habersham married Benjamin Ward in 1802. I believe my Edward Ward (my great grandfather) was their grandson, but I am having trouble with the link. He was listed in the 1885 Florida census as 38, married to Ella. Their children were Ella, Maggie, Thomas, Edward, Mamie (my grandmother), Willie and Nellie. Any help would be appreciated. By the way my e-mail is now sganch@ghg.net.

Hi......Are you of the Camber family branch that comes from New Brunswick, Canada? I'm new to genealogy, so probably am not searching the right way. Anyway, my husband's great grandfather is James Edward (supposedly descended from Loyalists)b.1850 m. Lydia Magee (approx.1870). They had several children, one of whom was my husband's grandfather, Parcy Valentine b. 1871. I think they lived in the area of Keswick or Fredericton and descendants finally ended up in Massachusetts.

Sincerely, Joan Camber

The Camber family tree seems to have grown
lately. I would enjoy hearing from the
descendents of Theodoty Camber and Joseph
Kemp. We need to make a correction about her
granddaughter Alice Morris. Her husband was
Lewis Morris not Willie Camber as someone thinks. Willie Camber lived with her in Newark Valley, New York. He was her cousin.

Hi,
Alice was my great aunt. She was
married to Lewis Morris in Syracuse, New York. They lived in Syracuse, Newark Valley,
and Schenectady. He died and she lived in
Erie, Pa. and finally back in Newark Valley.
In Newark Valley, Willie Camber, her cousin
lived with her. I knew them both at that time. To my knowledge she and Willie were
never married. Together they fixed up houses
and sold them. Willia also sold shoes from
house to house. Blanche Kemp and Lizzie Kemp
Cook lived in Newark Valley. Unfortunately my grandmother Mary Anne Kemp (Mayme) died
before I was born.
Joyce

Frances, you're right; my lineage from Thomas Camber is through Ann Sarah, who married John Habersham, son of James Habersham, acting governor of Georgia during Sir James Wright's absence from the colony, 1771-1773. Ann Habersham, oldest child of John Habersham and Ann Sarah Camber, was my great-great grandmother. I have a James Camber Habersham, son of John and Ann Sarah (Camber) Habersham in my records but, not a Thomas Camber Habersham. Do you think the one I have listed as James Camber Habersham might be the same as the one you have listed as Thomas Camber Habersham? I have James C. as being born about 1787 and died about 1788. I really appreciate your replies and all the info and look forward to working with you on the family.

Search for information on the parents and sibblings of Edward E. Camber, other name could be Eduard Schonfeldt
b. November 1, 1826 Zuckmantel, Austria now Zlate Hory, Czech Republic. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
