John Neal Cameron, Janet MacDonell

I would like to find information on my father's family. I am just beginning my search and don't have much information. My grandfather was Alexander Daniel Cameron and his parents were William G. Cameron and Margaret MacCleoud. William's parents were John Neal Cameron and Janet McDonell.
I know that my grandfather's family lived in Monkland, or Maxville in Canada, but he moved to New York.
If anyone recognizes these names and has information to add, help would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for info about my great grandmother Florence Elizabeth Cameron 1858-1913 Ohio. Married to William Joseph McMorrow. 8 children. Her parents might be Henry and Sally (Sarah?), but I'm not sure. I think she had an older sister Nancy. Please contact me at bevcoulter@hotmail.com if you have any info. Thanks.

Hello:
DNA Participant # 36323 Clan Cameron has the same ist line of gene markers as 8 other participants. I identify with #29230 and the Camerons now have 4 who have the same ist line. We are now trying to find others to join us as we are hoping to find siblings or other relatives of our line.
It would be wonderful if the above # or others with the same markers would be in touch. We can connect for a common purpose, and not to bother each other. Please give it a try. I am at dlarge@shaw.ca

Trying to trace the origins of my Cameron line.

Have managed to trace back from Edinburgh via Leith to Grantown-on-Spey and Kirkmichael, Banffshire but around 1760's i've run out of leads.

Some of the names I have are Lewis, Christina, John, James, Alexander, Thomas, Margaret, Jean, Helen and Gregor.

I know Lewis and Gregor (brothers) were saddlers in Grantown in the 1870's. Lewis seems to disappear completely around 1881 and I can't seem to find out what happened to him.

Hoping someone reads this and has links to this line.

Best wishes

Mark

Where is MUSSELLBURGH, please? I have a Cameron scenario of the 26th of Foots Cameronian Regiment. Part of it is a Charles Cameron being born in Inverness-shire, Scotland in 1783. the other part is a James Cameron who enlisted in Pennsylvania as a Loyalist in the 26th of Foot in 1777. He subsequently was posted to Britain to recruit. I have all that history by a researcher. At some time he is in Mussellburgh and absent without leave. It would make a great novel!Later one realizes this is May 1783 and Charles birth date. How Can I find if and where there was a baptism. A posting to Ireland and an eventual return to N. America,(Quebec) . Any advice about place of Baptism ?
I appreciate so much any bit of help.
Delphine Cameron Large UE

CAMERON: Scotland>New York Colony>Canada (United Empire Loyalists)

I recently received a CAMERON history of the decendants of Donald CAMERON and Margaret FRASER. Donald was the son of Angus CAMERON.

Donald and his father Angus came to Tryon County in the New York Colony in 1773, from Scotland. At the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War, they sided with the English Government, and were part of the First Battalion of the King's Royal Regiment of New York. Donald later transfered to the First Battalion of the 84th Regiment, known as "The Highland Emigrants". After the war, the family moved to the Stormont area of Canada West (now Ontario).

I am interested in finding out who Donald's Mother was, if there were any siblings that remained in Scotland. Also, if Angus CAMERON had any siblings that either immigrated with him to the American Colonies or remained in Scotland.

Thanks for your assistance.

David R. CAMERON / CAMRON

I am looking for the ancestors of David R. Cameron. He was born May 25, 1806.On census records he always indicated his birthplace as Tennessee. He was married to Susannah Wilburn (Welborn) in Jackson Missouri in 1829. He moved to Dallas Co., Texas in 1846 and died there June 14, 1894.

I have seen references to his mother being Rachel Cameron Overton and Rachel being married to a Cameron prior to her marriage to Aaron Overton. This would make sense as David showed up in Missouri (late 1820's) about the same time as Rachel and Aaron Overton and her father John Ezra. David also moved to Texas abt 1845 at the same time as Rachel and Aaron. As well as three of Susannah's brothers, Edward, Robert and Hirum Wilburn. Edward being married to Rachel's daughter Nancy.

If anyone has any information regarding David's ancestry, I would appreciate it, I have been looking for this for a very long time and feel like I am hitting a brick wall. I would particularly like to know the name of David's father and what happened to him.

Thanks
Diane Cameron Santos

William CAMERON - Canada to Alger Co., Michigan

Article found in October 13, 1890 issue of Alger County Republican newspaper. I am not related and have no more information. I am just posting this to help others.

William Cameron was born near Lake Nipigon, Canada, March 15, 1804. When two years of age he was taken by his uncle, John Cameron, of Toronto, Canada, and received his educaton in that city. He lived with his uncle until twenty-one years of age, and then entered the employ of the American Fur Company as clerk, holding this position for five years. At the end of that time he went to Sault Ste. Marie, where he spent a number of years. It is there he married Miss Sophia Nolan, an Ojibwa woman, and he at once adopted the customs of her people. From the Soo he came to where is now the village of AuTrain, where he camped for two years, being one of the first white men that landed there. From there he went to Marquette, where he resided for four years. He then came to Grand Island as keeper of the North Light, which position he occupied for 16 years. While there his wife was taken from him by that cruel destoyer, consumption. He is the father of eleven children, of whom two are now living - Mrs. McKay of Munising, and Frank Cameron of AuTrain. His two oldest sons were killed in the Civil War. When Mr. Cameron's health began to fail about four years ago he went to the Soldiers' home in Grand Rapids, and he is now drawing near the close of a long and eventful life. As a voyageur he has traversed the continent to the Pacific coast, and as a trapper he has explored the great forests around Lake Superior as well as portions of the Hudson Bay Territory, and as a soldier of the United States he served with fidelity. He is a thoroughbred woodsman and an honest and most unselfish man. His many friends will ever hold him in pleasant remembrance as one of those eccentric and unspoiled children of nature we occasionally meet with in the journey of life.

I am trying to find more information on parents and grandparents of Daniel Duncan Cameron and Elizabeth Benvie especially James Cameron b. abt 1820 d. 1868 Salt Springs wife Nancy Ann "Annie" Maxwell. Thom and had 12 children. Several moved to the US. My grandmother Ethel married Charles Scammell and lived in Quincy, Mass.
Simon CAMERON (1799 - 1889)

Cameron was born in Maytown, Pennsylvania, to Charles Cameron and Marth Pfoutz. He was orphaned at nine and later apprenticed to a printer, Andrew Kennedy, editor of the Northumberland Gazette before entering the field of journalism. He was editor of the Bucks County Messenger in 1821. A year later, he moved to Washington, D.C., and studied political movements while working for the printing firm of Gales and Seaton. He married Margaret Brua and returned to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where he purchased and ran the Republican in 1824.Simon Cameron (March 8, 1799 – June 26, 1889) was an American politician who served as United States Secretary of War for Abraham Lincoln at the start of the American Civil War. After making his fortune in railways and banking, he turned to a life of politics. He became a state senator in 1845 for the state of Pennsylvania, succeeding James Buchanan. Originally a Democrat, he failed to secure a nomination for senator from the Know-Nothing party, and joined the People's Party, the Pennsylvania branch of what became the Republican Party. He won the Senate seat in 1857, and became one of the candidates for the Republican nomination in the election of 1860.

http://www.answers.com/topic/simon-cameron
Simon Cameron: Biography and Much More from Answers.com

Anyone working on the PA Camerons?Anyone know the father of this Charles Cameron?

DUNCAN CAMERON.

Few men in Alameda County are better known than Duncan Cameron. He is a native of O'Delltown, County of Huntington, Canada, close to the New York border. He came to California via Cape Horn, from New York City, and arrived in San Francisco September 24th, 1849. On the voyage he was twice shipwrecked, and suffered considerable privations. In San Francisco he for a short time traded in groceries, and in January, 1851, went farming in Pacheco Valley, and continued all winter. Here he turned up the virgin adobe for the first time, and found it hard work. He returned to San Francisco for a spell, and lost all his capital in trade. After this he worked for a while at Sacramento. Disliking the place on account of its unhealthfulness, he sought another location and pitched upon San Antonio, which he reached via Martinez, on horseback. He started the first livery stable in the place with three horses, which he kept in a yard. It was for a time precarious work, but the business lived.

. At that time there was no wharf, merely a little embarcadero, in the place. The means of communication with San Francisco was by launches and whaleboats manned by Portuguese, who would pull across the bay when there -were passengers enough to make a load. The charge for crossing in this manner was $100 a trip, and it took about four hours to make it. The only inhabitants of the town then were a butcher named Fuller, Allen, Chase, Larne, the Pattens, Michel, and Lemoine, besides some Portuguese who boated, fished, and raised poultry. There were some Mexicans and Californians who were employed about the ranches. One hundred Chilanos made the place at one time a rendezvous. There were two saw-mills then in the Redwoods, and two more were built afterwards. They were Prince's, Spicer & Witherill's, Tupper and Brown's, and Thorne's. They continued about five years, until the timber was all cut down.

The livery business did well, and in 1853 he built a large stable and had eight or ten horses. This he sold out within a year, and in 1854 bought a piece of ground and built upon it, concluding to make Brooklyn his permanent home. Purchased the Post-office block, now the most valuable property in the town. In 1854 married Miss Annie Lydia Maddox, of Castro Valley. At this time there was no farming done, only what was done by the Pattens and Chase. In fact, none was done down the valley nearer than San Lorenzo. On the Alameda encinal there were only Wick ware, Hibbard Aughenbaugh and Brower, who raised tomatoes and other vegetables on the edge of the peninsula, close to the estuary. Larue and Patten had some squatter troubles, Larne having pre-empted some water front claimed by the latter; but in a lawsuit the latter was beaten.

It was in 1856 that Mr. Cameron started in the stage business, which brought him his special popularity and local fame. He started an opposition line to McLaughlin's, then running. The run to San Josè was very lively. For a time the fare was only $1 per passenger between San Antonio and San Jose, and the trip was most expeditiously made. The opposition was kept up for several years, when Cameron was compelled to withdraw.

" Dunk," as he was familiarly called, filled various pablic positions, from Constable to Supervisor. He was Road Overseer and Public Administrator; for three years he filled the position of County Supervisor. He took always an active and earnest part in politics, and was in succession a Whig and a Republican.

In 1858 he bought a quantity of land for farming purposes, which, however, he partly disposed of in 1861. Previous to the real estate excitement of 1868, he purchased. a tract of land north of the town of Brooklyn, known as the Cameron Tract, for $18,000, which he disposed of within a year for $50,000. Mr. Cameron has a brother, now in the East, named Carlysle, who was for a while Justice of the Peace for Brooklyn Township, and a frequent contributor to the columns of the local press, always writing in a pleasant, humorous vein. Mr. Ashley Cameron, for many years a prominent resident of Washington Township, is also a brother. His aged father lived in this county for a number of years, and his was the oldest name on. the great register of Alameda County, before he returned to his old Eastern home.

Having acquired a considerable competency, Mr. Cameron has given his two children, a son and daughter, a superior education, and amuses himself with occasional trips from home, seeing the world, and comparing other places with that in which he lives. He never wavers in the opinion that there is no place like Alameda County. Mr. and Mrs. Cameron being among the first American couples married in this county, there has always been an interest attached to them by the old settlers.

The Centenial Yearbook of Alameda County, 1886

Hello,
I hope someone can help me. I'm searching for my grandfather, Elwood Cameron, born circa 1918, possibly in White Lake, Ontario. He married Amy Barber in the late 1930s. They had (maybe) two children, Glendon and Brian (my dad). I'm not sure if they divorced or separated, but by the 1970s, he and Amy were no longer together. I don't even know if he is still living. Any info would be greatly appreciate.
Thanks.

CAMERON - Lochcarron

Can anyone help me with information on my GGGG grandfather John Cameron and associated families from Lochcarron, Wester Ross late 1700s / early 1800's. He died in 1839 and have no info further back than him. Married Bess/Betsey Mclennan from Lochalsh, 10 children between 1812 and 1835. Widow, sons John, William, Alexander and daughters Betsey and Flora emigrated to Elmira area in Illinois in 1852. Son George went to NZ. Eldest son Hugh stayed in Scotland as did second daughter Harriet. 2 other children Angus and Peggy Jeffrey probably died as children. Many other Lochcarron families also went to the same area in Illinois at about the same time and all seemed to have stayed very close. Other connected families (Scotland before 1850 or US thereafter) include Mackenzie, Mackay, Maclennan, MacIvor or MacIver, Macrae, Murchison, Riddell, Copeland, MacDonald, Oliver and many others. Thanks for any help you can give!

I am working on a project to identify the different Cameron families that emigrated from Inverness, Scotland to the Mohawk River Valley of upstate New York, and then to southern Ontario as loyalists.

One part of the project is reconstructing a possible passenger list of the ship The Pearl, which was chartered by the McDonnells and brought over 400 highlanders to New York in the fall of 1773.
What I have so far is posted at:
http://www.calcamerons.com/pages/unsolved/reconst.html

A second part of the project is researching the families who emigrated with my ancestors, Angus and Donald Cameron.
CAMERON Family - Massey, Ontario. Canada

In organizing Darby family information I found wedding photos of Ethel Almeda Cameron and John Smitherman, September 27, 1921. She was the daughter of John Cameron of Massey Ontario. The photo lists Earl Cameron and Russel Cameron on the back (information probably from the Massey Museum).

Also found a death notice for John Smitherman of Schreiber Ontario. I believe his was the son of Ethel and John. He died August 2, 1980 in Thunder Bay but was buried in Schreiber. Names listed were Malcom Cameron of Parkhill, Mrs. Annine Cameron, Russel, Donna & Rod Cameron, all of Thunder and Cora Cameron of Strathroy.

Willing to scan information to forward to family members. I do not believe that they are related to the Darby family but were probably family friends. I do vaguely remember some of the names from my youth.

Gail Darby

The letter you refer to that I wrote to your father was not answered. Cousin Olivia kept me well informed at the time and I knew of the great loss you sustained by the death of your mother. And realizing the issues the had to be met during the accident, sickness and death of a beloved parent, and the new cares that had to be met of an aged father. You all had my sincere sympathy on account of my past experience. It was truly gratifying to me to read in your letter of the distribution your father made of his property and of the nice feeling pervading among the children.

Since March 11, I have Uncle Joseph McConnell at home. He was twelve weeks in the hospital. His first thought, when leaving the hospital, was to take rooms at the nearest hotel to the Homestead, but on inquiry, I found all the rooms taken and they could only take him as a border. That was not satisfactory. I secured a private boarding place across the street from the “Homestead,” and I suggested starting the fires and making the house comfortable, and to stay with Uncle at night as long as necessary. I have been doing this to the present and uncle is well cared for. He has a slight indisposition for a few days, but is doing nicely at present. His great trouble is weakness. We were fortunate in securing a good boarding place. Uncle enjoys his meals and rests well, sleeps well at night.

I am heartily glad you referred to the matter of genealogy to me, because there are not as many who are informed, besides while Uncle Joseph is still living, I can consult with him. I am sorry not to have something real nice for you daughter to help her being eligible to the societies referred to (DAR). Our ancestors were of the peaceful but nevertheless bestcitizens. Uncle Tommy Cameron was an honorably discharged soldier of the Civil War, and on special occasions wore badges and credentials enough for the whole “Friend-Schaft.”

I will now answer your Grandmother Cameron’s maiden name. Uncle Joseph Cameron’s wifes maiden name Bories/Burris?. Polly Bories(Burris?). Uncle Tommy Cameron spoke of a brother of your Grandmother, Joseph Bories(Burris?). My Grandmother McConnel’s father’s name was Lewis "Ludwig" Cameron. His wifes’ family name was Wolf. There are immediate relatives living at the Wolf homestead and own the place. I visit there. Grandmother McConnel, Polly May, the eldest, Catherine (Aunty Vogel) were the two daughters of the first marriage. John, the eldest son and Joseph, Your Grandfather were the children of the first marriage. Uncle John Cameron mentioned, may have drifted into the war of the Revolution. It was he of whom I wrote to your father that one day while your grandfather, Joseph Cameron, was out along the Juaniata he was addressed by a voice from the opposite of the river, and looking in the direction of the voice saw a man. Uncle Joseph C!
ameron was addressed “Brother Joe, is that you?” Answered “Yes is that you brother John?” Uncle Joseph Cameron hurriedly made his way to his boat, and crossed the river to meet his brother. And in his own language met on one. If the earth had opened and swallowed him, he would not more effectually been out of sight. You of course know when Uncle Joseph Cameron went west as a pioneer in his own equipment, all of the family but your father who had preceded the rest, were overtaken by sickness(Cholera) and had three funerals in five days. Uncle Joe’s wife, daughter Catherine (Mrs. Rush) and her husband. The latter, Cousin Mae Williams Grandparents. While my Grandparents were still living in the country, your Grandmother Cameron with your father, Cousin Henry Nelson Cameron, visited by grandparents at their home. My mother (86 years), your father, and Uncle Tommy Cameron were near the same age. Family name of the second wife Gossert, Aunt!
Betsy (who died with us) the eldest Sarah, married to a man named Lon
g. Lydia married to Meffert. Third wife Maria Walter. Simon Cameron the eldest of this marriage. Noah, Louisa (married to Foesig), and Tommy Cameron. My birth date was Sept. 4, 1845. May following Great Grandfather Ludwig Cameron visited my Grandparents at Lebanon and I have the honor of being carried out of the house first time bare headed by him. Grandmother McConnel always spoke of your father by using his full name Henry Nelson Cameron. My Grandparents were in touch with Uncle Joseph Cameron (Your Grandfather) and were informed of their preparations to go west and received letters when they were overtaken by sickness and death. Before starting for the west, Great Grandfather Ludwig Cameron with his family and Uncle Joseph Cameron (your grandfather) lived near together, near East Salem. Uncle Noah Cameron was already married. So was Uncle Simon Cameron. Uncle Tommy Cameron was living home most of the time with his parents. Grandfather Ludwig Cameron was a shoemaker by tra!
de and a useful man in the Community. He had given much attention to tree culture and raising fruit.Skilled in Grafting. when Uncle Adam McConnel and Uncle Joseph McConnel (brothers) were on a visit at Thompsontown, they were shown by Father Evans a worthy resident of Thompsontown, grafted in Mr. Evans orchard and posts and fencing set by Great Grandfather Ludwig Cameron. Mr. Evans spoke in highest praise of Great Grandfather Cameron as a friend and neighbor and a useful citizen. When Uncle Noah Cameron died, the two uncles (McConnel) were at the funeral. It was said of Uncle Noah Cameron that he was worth more in the community than some others that might be named by the dozen. All of Uncle Noah Cameron’s family are well to do, and are in possession of the homestead. Two of the sons within the last year have gone to Florida and bought land with the purpose of making their home there. One of Uncle Tommy Cameron’s daughters (Mrs. Sarah Walker) lives at Post Fal!
ls, Idaho. They have a farm of 160 acres, and have set an orchard of o
ver 700 choice fruit trees. I had a letter from Cousin Sarah last fall stating they had 800 choice apples in boxes ready to be shipped. Cousin Emma Poffenbeger, a sister of Mrs. Walker and her husband are looking forward to making a trip to Post Falls,Idaho. And when they accomplish it, expect to stop at Niles, Mich. Great grandfather Cameron was a deeply religious man. The last time he visited Lebanon, when I was an infant, Uncle Joseph McConnel know of this visit, and when he left Lebanon, Uncle Jacob McConnel, Uncle Adam McConnel and Uncle Joe took G. Grandfather Cameron to Highspire with Grandfather McConnel’s horse and carriage to visit Uncle and Aunty Vogel.

When Great Grandfather Cameron visited Lebanon last time, Great Grandmother McConnel was still living. She was a very intelligent woman, and at that time considered an educated lady. It is said that she and father Cameron spent much time in social intercourse talking over the future and religious matters,, and their parting was never forgotten. My Grandmother McConnel persuaded her father while on this visit to attend catechetical lecture in our church, conducted by our Pastor, Rev. Henry Wagner, he was deeply impressed and remarked of Pastor Wagner when he came home “Er is ein guten Lehrer” I can not tell you what a comfort it is to me to receive your letter. Trusting it will be of help to you and your daughter, if there is anything I have not mentioned call my attention to it and any information I can give, you shall have cheerfully. My youngest daughter, Rhoda, is very much interested in knowing of the past and means to profit by it, while Uncle Joseph McC!
onnel and I are still here to give her information. She is a teacher at Cornwall, and enjoying her vacation and a much needed rest. It would be a great comfort to me to have your daughter write to Rhoda with the hope that they will become correspondents.

Please remember us kindly to the relatives at Niles,MI and South Bend,IN. I expect to hear from some of you coming East this summer. Great Grandfather Cameron is buried at East Salem near where they lived before your Grandfather Joseph Cameron went west. His first wife is buried at Kimmerlings Church little more than three miles from Lebanon. Father Cameron’s parents came into the U.S. by way of Canada. In their travels, his mother carried him Indian fashion on her back. Later his father returned to Canada. The mother with her little boy drifted into Lancaster Co. Pa where they lived on a farm with a kind family, when the poor little boy, our Great Grandfather, was forsaken by his mother, who also returned to Canada. The family with whom they were living kept the little boy, and in time he made his way into Lebanon Co. He learned the shoemaker trade at Stumpstown, now Fredericksburg, by Jacob Buchananyer. He prospered at his trade and married into a respected family !
near Kimmerlings Church by the name of Wolf. His first wife died when the children were young, so small that their father lifted them to...(need to find the last page of the story!).I think I corrected all the mistakes...

John Walker
nicenonya2@yahoo.com

1850 census shows them living in Greenwood,Juniata Co.,PA.near the Rush family

Marker in Milton Twp says 68 years 11 months.

Juniata county was created in 1831,see also Mifflin Co.,PA

1900 census for Henry N.
Moira CAMERON, Yeoman

From World Wide Words -- 08 Sep 07 (reposted with permission; thanks, Michael!)

3. Recently noted
------------------------------------------------------------------YO, WOMAN! For the first time in its 522 years, a woman began work on Monday as a member of the Yeomen of the Guard who act as warders at the Tower of London. Because one condition for joining the Guard is a continuous period of 20 years in the armed forces, reaching at least the rank of staff sergeant, it is only recently that women have become eligible to join the warders' ranks. Most papers that reported the event jokingly called the new member, Moira CAMERON, a yeowoman, no doubt believing they had invented it. But it turns out to have a long history - the OED's first example is from 1852. It became more widely known during the First World War when women began to serve in the US Navy. They had the official rank of Yeoman (F), "F" denoting female, as you would guess. An informal term was "yeomanette", which the women hated; "yeowoman" was a common alternative. The last member of the group, Charlotte WINTERS, died only last March at the age of 109. Both "yeomanette" and "yeowoman" vanished after the War except in reference to this period. Among other meanings, yeoman was the name given to a superior servant in a noble or royal household, one who often ate meat (in Old English, humbler servants were called loaf-eaters, who mainly subsisted on bread). Such well-fed menials were derisively named "beef-eaters" and this is the source of the famous nickname of the members of the Yeoman of the Guard, who acquired it in the seventeenth century. These days they carry it with pride.

World Wide Words is copyright (c) Michael Quinion 2007. All rights
reserved.
Donald CAMERON Snr, c 1853 & Donald Jnr 1879 - UK

I am trying to trace my g.grandfather, Donald Cameron. He was born on 14th January 1879 married Frances Rose Hulin-Rich, and they lived in London. My grandmother was born in 1908 and her godfather was Harry Lauder. Because my g.grandfather died in 1913 aged 35 and his family did not approve of his marriage, my g.grandmother did not keep in touch with his family. I would love to hear from anyone who might know of him. He had a brother-in-law called George Ferris who lived in Tile Hill, W. Coventry, England, UK, in 1913.
