Re: Information needed about Camisa family

Hi,

My name is Peter De Campi, my grandmother's maiden name was Maria Camisa and she was born in 1884 in Torsogno.

I have very few details but obviously she married my grandfather, Angelo De Campi and they came to London, England. They had four sons and one daughter. My grandmother(nona) died in 1947, alas I never got to meet her as I was born in 1956. I set up my own business twenty years ago and called it "Camisa software" as a tribute to her.

My grandfather had no family that we're aware of, so I think he must have been an orphan. When I looked up Torsogno in google maps (spelt Tarsogno) , it shows places near by called “Campi” and "Pieve di Campi" and I'm sure he would have taken his surname from one of these.

My brother has visited Torsogno. He commented that all the old men there looked like my uncle (), he also mentioned a small church with tomb stones. The tomb stomes on one side were all Camisa, on the other side they were all Palmigiani's. The Palmigiani's were the other dominant family in Torsogno and I get the impression they was some friction between the two.

Torsogno, being a very small place means that your grandfather and my grandmother, could well have been related or at the very least would have known each other. And I think it's wonderful that my rambling searches on the internet should have found your post. I don't think I've added very much to your quest but it's nice to have connected.

Regards

Pete

Hi - Thanks for your reply to my message. You've added to reasons that confirm my belief that my grandfather was from Torsogno. I've corresponded with Alberto Camisa of Camisa Foods in England;he too is from Torsogno and may be of the same family you know. Since my grandfather was an importer of European foods for restaurants in New York City, I guess we can assume it's a family interest!
I know that the best way to learn more information about my earlier family members would involve my going to Torsogno. I hope I can do so someday.
Thanks again, Ben Davis (Boxford, MA)
I am trying to locate family members of a Joseph Cammisa who would have lived in Trenton, New Jersey in the 1960's. He would have been born either 1945 or 1946. I was told that this Joseph Cammisa was involved in a bank robbery in Florida sometime in the 1970's. He died apparently from being shot in that bank robbery. Does anyone know of this deceased person or where his family lives now? If so, please let me know.

Hi Carolina, Since I posted that message I have been in touch with a lot of the Camesi's and a lot more of the Cammisa Families. Cammisa is the way the cousins in Italy and in Butler, Pa. Two brothers (Alec and David) had the spelling changed when they joined the army here. We all have had two family reunions where we met a lot of them. My brother-in-law visited Italy and met more of the family and got more information. The Giovanni Cammisa that is related to our family was born Oct. 14, 1875 in Torremaggiore (FG Foggia), Italy. He dies Aug. 8, 1965 I don't know if that is your Giovannior not. Have you always spelled your name Camesi and not Cammisa?

Hi Ben & Pat Davis:
I had a grandfather named Louis Camisa born about that time frame in Torsogno. I have check the records we have and cannot find an exact date of his birth. He was definitely born in Torsogno (correct spelling I believe is Tarsogno).

What is your interest in the Camisa lineage? Where do you live and what is your phone number? We live in Morgan Hill, California, about 80 miles south of San Francisco. Our phone number is 408-779-6877.

Give us a call, drop a note or what ever if interested.

Sincerely, John Camisa

Hi. Just wondering if there is any relation to "Commisa" of Boro Park, in Brooklyn, NY. My dad told me that the name Commisa had been mispelled when my grandparents came to this country from Basilicata (Matera), Italy. I do not know which way it was mispelled. However, all through my school days I had spelled my name Commisa. I do not speak Italian, I know, what a shame, but I can read and respond very well in American English and some Brooklyn slang (clean).
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Barbara Ann

Lori - I've never heard of a family connection with Czechoslovakia but anything is possible! I know little more than was mentioned in my original message. If you learn anything that might suggest that a Granchi married a Camisa from Italy, it might lead us both to another step. We've considered the possibility of a misspelling... the name "Franchi' is another possibility. Ben Davis

My maiden name is Granchi. My grandfather was Joseph Edward Granchi & he died in WWII. His parents we've been told came to America from Czechoslovakia but my mother tried to have us traced & could not. I doubt if this helps you at all. But if it means anything to you or you think it might to me please let me know. Thanks, Lori

If you want I'm sure I can get mori info.

I am so glad that we have made contact. Virginia is still alive, although Hector has passed away. Hector is my great-uncle. My Grandfather was Michael(spelled then Michele, and pronounced me-gale), they also had a brother Adam who had passed away 30 years or so ago.
Romeo is my Fathers brother, and is still alive. The Cammisa's are somewhat of a big family. We would love to hear more from you, and would really enjoy a summer family re-union. My Grandmother, Costantina is still living, and may be able to provide more information.

My e-mail address is castjb@aol.com.
We have been trying to find out more about my husbands family. His father was David Camesi. We know that the spelling was changed when he came over. He had relatives in Butler. My husband remembers going to Butler years ago to a wedding and meeting Romeo. We knew Hector & Virginia Cammisa who lived on Hickory St. in Butler. They must be dead. David's brother was Alex and Alex's grandson has been in touch with us. He said that he knows some of the Cammisa's in Butler and would like to have some kind of family reunion this summer in hopes of finding out more information. He went to Italy last year but didn't have much luck. I would like to hear if you are related to my husband. Maybe your grandmother would remember something of the Camesi family from Pgh. David's wife was Concettina. My husbands name is John. His brothers are Leonard, Donald (deceased) and David. Sister is Josephine.

Information needed about Camisa family

My maternal grandfather's name was Luigi (Louis G.) Camisa. He was born in Italy 9/28/1881 and came to New York City in 1898. According to the ship's manifest, his home town was listed as "Carrogno", but we've been told that there is no such place, so we think it may be Torsogno. His father's name was Stefano Camisa, his mother was Cellaria Granchi, and they remained in Italy. If anyone might be able to add to our knowledge, we'd be thrilled!
Ben & Pat Davis
Hello Alberto
My grandfather's name was Vittorio Camisa and he came from Tarsogna, Parma. I know that his father's name was Giovanni Camisa and his mother's name was Maria Bertollotti. Vittorio Camisa married my grand-mother Giulia Franchi (daughter of Dafyddo Franchi Carolina Cappatthelli in 1936). They moved to the United Kingdom in September, 1937.

I know that Vittorio had 9 brothers and 3 sisters but I only have the name of Gisseppie. Vittorio died in 1950 when my mother was 8 so I am afraid it has been very hard for me to find out a lot of the names of my family in Italy.

I hope that you will be able to provide me with some information on my family and hopefully I will be able to give you information on the family in Wales.

Best wishes.

Hayley Spillane

I have been researching my family for approximately one year. My father is Louis Cammiso. His father was Joseph (Giuseppe) Commiso. I have identified individuals from this family who spell the name "Commiso" "Cammiso". I know of at least one cousin who spells the name "Cammisa" - Pat Cammisa of Florida (age approx. 90). You may want to broaden the search or look under these family names.
