Camm/Kemm

If you haven't discovered it already, CAMM is a variant spelling of KEMM (and OF CAM, KEM, KEMB, KEMBE). In my family, based in Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, England, the change took hold in the latter 1700s. One line followed CAMM, another KEMM. The later came to the US (PA) in the mid-1800s; however, the 1850 Census taker misspelled my gr-gr-grandfather's name as Samuel Camm. I'd be happy to share my info with anyone connected.

My mother's parents were Jack Caton and Ellen Cordeaux (page 3 of your attachments) and I therefore have more information about that branch of the family.
Camm from Johnstown, NY

I am looking for information regarding my great-great grandfather, George E. Camm, Sr. He was born January 15, 1844 in England (I would love to know where). He came to the United States as a young man, and settled in Johnstown, NY sometime around the Civil War.

He was a jeweler, engraver, and watchsmith.

He married Dorothy Nellis (b. Dec 13, 1843, d. Dec 4, 1927)

At the time of 1869, he and his business partner, Eli R. Dorn, owned a jewelry business on North Side Main in Johnstown, Camm & Dorn.

A 1907 business guide to Johnstown has an entry for George, Sr.:

GEORGE E. CAMM - Practical watchmaker and optician, No. 8 East Main Street. This concern was established in the year 1868, and it has been in the present location since the year 1888. Mr. G. E. Camm is the proprietor and since he took charge of the business he has advanced steadily and conservatively until he has placed his business among the leading establishments of its kind in the city. He has sound business sense, a thorough knowledge of his art, and believes in fair and honorable dealing with his patrons. His store is well stocked with high class goods. The large patronage which he enjoys demonstrates the wisdom of the careful business policies which he has pursued. There is also a work and repair chop where the finest work is done, particular attention being given also to the finest kind of engraving. Mr. Camm has taken care of the school clocks of the city for thirty-five years. Mr. Camm is also a practical optician, and has two assistants.

He died in Johnstown on July 29, 1919.

My grandfather, Edwin Sturdevant Camm, died on August 4, 2002, in Johnstown, NY. Edwin was the grandson of George E. Camm, Sr. His father was George E. Camm, Jr.

Any information would be greatly appreciated! My name is Duncan Hsu. My mother, Ruth Camm, is Edwin Camm's oldest daughter. I can be reached at duncanhsu2002@yahoo.com

Is she the one with Ironmonger inher name? Don't remember right now if it was a middle or last name. If so, then yes I have seen it. The copy I saw was made on an old mimograph machine and was of poor quality. Half of the ink had disappeared. It had very little on my particular John Hansford (who moved to West Virginia) but I did get some gleamings from it.

My husband and I are trying to "round out" the Hansfords and add in the siblings, etc which is why we are in search of the Camm family.

Can you you tell me any sources for the Camms that we can look at?

Thanks
Jackie

No. I have not found out any further information on the CammEnglish lineage..wish that I had...although I have found information on Camm lines in other than Yorkshire I have not found any connection to us. We have the Hansford data of Virginia connecting to us. Did you know that a book had been written on the Hansfords by Thelma Hansford of Seaford, Virginia?.
Get in touch with us if you need further information on it. J. Camm

Last week a woman in our town discovered the grave of William Camm, while repaving her sidewalk. The stone reads:
"Bewildered parents weep not for me for I am at rest rejoicing on my savior's breast. Prepare to meet me on heaven's happy shore where we shall meet to part no more."

William was the son of Joseph C Marth F. Camm. He was born March 2, 1814 and died March 27, 1818.

If any one has any information on this family, please let me know.
James,
I was wondering if there was any more information pertaining to the Camm family and Newtown, PA. I know that you posted a message about a Camm Church or Church connection. What did you mean by that? I know that the head of the Newtown Historical Society has tried to research this family, but he had no luck finding descendents of the Camms. I would like to get copies of any of the information you have on this family. When this story ran in our newspaper, it was front page for a week! We take our history very seriously around here. It seems that your ancestors played a relativley big part in that history. If you could get me the names of the the other children and any other vital information you have on the family I can assure you that this story will run on the front page of the Bucks County Courier Times. Please e-mail me at LSals420@aol.com. I was wondering where you live.

-Lynette Salsbury
