Armour Family Relation To Campbell Clan?

Hi All, I was recently at a Scottish Games festival in NY with my husband and he was looking for roots of his last name. We found out about the last name but not anything else. We wrote to a number of people and got a response from one woman Jean Armour in the UK whose husband was from Ayrshire.

She stated "The Armours were not a clan as such, but they were origionally from Ayrshire. Many Armours were deported to the US and Australia for fighting with the Campbells against the MacDonald's at Culloden. The Armour's are entitled to wear the Campbell Tartan or the Burns Check -
and Campbell means wry- faced. The Armours do have a family coat of Arms, Crest with a Latin inscription which translated means HONESTY IS THE SAFEST HELMET. Robbie Burns married Jean Armour (she is probably the most famous Armour - has anyone traced her roots to a clan association?) but the only living direct descendent is a female:( she was from Mauchline in Ayrshire, where there is an Armour family museum. Mostly the Armours were lowland Scots, but they were a
battling lot - and from what I have managed to read about them , always got mixed up
in a fight"

So this is what this woman says who did a ton of research (lucky for me). I am looking to confirm these facts that the Armours were associated with the Clan Campbell and wear the Campbell tartan.

Is there anyone out there that can help me? I would appreciate private email replies as I check email frequently...thanks in advance for ANY light anyone can shed on this mystery.

I figure Jean Armour was a pretty famous Scot (by association)...I would have thought that someone would have had her whole genealogy mapped but I'm finding that is not the case LOL!
JAMES CAMPBELL Arrival Va. 1720-22 & RELATED FAMILIES

Hi Everyone on the Board,
I have spent about 14 hrs this weekend trying to hunt down more info on our James Campbell that arrived here in 1722 Va.
It looks like Russ may be right on his theory that he posted several days ago. It does appear that the Campbell Ministers that I have previously found are in fact brothers.....Colin, Alexander and James to name but a few, that migrated here from Scotland in about a 10-15 yr span in the early 1700's.
What I have found thus far is to much to put into one page here, so I will post a few at a time.
I don't have access as yet to the parish records for Scotland to find the parents of this James Campbell. I will get this access this weekend hopefully and can finalize this theory.
Like all of you I have anxiously awaited someone with this knowledge to post this data, but it looks like we have all waited
and hoped for this. I can access medieval info off of another site of which I am a member of. So, if need be I will go that route.
One way or another I am determined to get the info that we all need to prove this line of Campbell family.
Anyways,
Will start posting my findings in about an hr or so from now....as I have several things I need to go and take care of.
I have printed out most of the data so it will be easy to just glean from that the important facts that we need. I have about 40 pages to go through so bear with me as I post them.
From this data we should be able to prove which line is which and who belongs to who from the states listed, census, wills, marriages, etc.

Karen :>)

Family

Hi, all!

I just happened across this group by accident so thought I would say hello to each of you. I am Sam Campbell, no big deal that. My grandfather was Albert "Bert" Campbell, one of the four brothers who owned the Oklahoma Campbell Brothers Circus. The previous Campbell Bros Circus wintered in Nebraska and was owned by an grand-uncle of Bert's and several of his sons.

First, Cathy Henry, or henrydogwoman, is a descendant of Charles "Doc" Campbell (I think), or maybe Virgil, one of the Nebraska brothers and one of my cousins a couple of times removed. Cathy, like me and several of my Oklahoma cousins, are trying to develop a history of some kind of the two shows.

There has been a Campbell show on the road since at least 1868 and as late as the 1950s, but only these two shows, the Oklahoma and Nebraska shows, have any connection to my family as far as I know. The 1950s show was called the H.W. Campbell Circus, if I remember correctly and operated out of Texas.

I understand this is supposed to be a genealogy type board, but if you have any questions about the circus, drop me a line or two and let me know I will be more than happy to exchange information with you.

Campbell DNA Surname Project

As several people have pointed out, the Campbell DNA project web site link from the CCSNA home page is having problems. I'm sure this will be corrected shortly. In the mean time, you can go directly to the site at:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Campbell

Please note that the main page has several tabs -- Background - Goals - News- Results - Y Results, All the raw data from everyone of our over 270 participants is available under the "Y Results" tab. However, please be patient, this data takes a long time to load.

As a quick aside -- the Campbell Project had cracked the top 20 list as one of the largest surname projects in the world. However, because I'm rather passive in promoting it and very selective about whom I let in, we now have slipped to #24. (By selective, I mean that we don't let non-Campbell surnames to join without some good reason.)

http://www.worldfamilies.net/fiftyplusprojects

Also, note that because the project is so large, I don't frequently send out broadcast messages which are likely to end up in your spam folder. But please don't confuse this with inactivity or lack of interest. The project is going strong and I answer every personal inquiry and e-mail

- Kevin

The founding of Campbell, Calif/ AND the gold rush,statehood,-- and how they brought christanity across the plains-- And there was at least one minister in every generation--to date! and also, founding of other areas and other towns therein. AND MANY 'statesmen along the ways!We have traced our lines connecting to that "family tree": such as Tipton.Monteith,Bennett,Dorman,etc. I would like to pass this on to any of this line that would like to have my oldest son's and my years of probing and searching.compiling! I can not pss on my grt,grt grdpas's diary because it is too frail, and not ledgable for yrs. Because my cousins did not preserve it/etc,! I asked them to give it to the Bancroft Historical library in N. Calif.(UCB) MANY years ago--
But no such luck! Thank heaven! we/our line-- has great memory "banks" !!! And ,that two towns/areas have plaques and books telling about the history of===All noting the Campbell family's involvement therein!

Need proof of Parents for Eldridge S. Campbell

Every Family Tree on Ancestry.com shows Bartholomew Campbell as Eldridge S.Campbell's father but I think Eldridge's father is James W. Campbell or Wiatt Campbell.
Can anyone provide me with a copy of documentation or at least point me in the right direction so that I might get a copy. I have several documents that lead me to believe that someone other than Bartholomew Campbell is Eldridge's father, one of these facts is that Bartholomew and Tabitha married (supposedly Eldridge's Parents) were not married until 1820 5 years after Eldridge was born march 1815.

Thank You

Carroll Campbell

She married Albert Riley Morrison sometime between 1900 and 1910. Supposedly she was born in WV to parents who were both born in OH. I have no idea who her parents were & that is why I am looking for her 1900 census ... she should be a 16-18 year old daughter on that census with her parents.

Any ideas?

Please forgive me if I've overlooked this somewhere, but I am searching for my GGGreat Grandmother's parentage. I believe her name was Elizabeth M. Campbell. I found the marrage record, date of 31 December 1842 in Nelson CO, Virginia to James Wright. The lived in what became WV, Fayette CO, mostly. Their children were Elphason, Samuel, John, George, Iverson, Nancy, PArlona, and Charles. After James' death, she remarried a Richard Davis, no children that I have found.
Listed on her marriage licence was a Samuel Campbell. That would fall in with the naming the second son after the mothers father. But I cannot find any listings for her birth.
Does anyone know her? I"d be happy to share any information I have, though my Campbells and Wrights are still in a tangle.
Thank you!

I'm looking for any info on Samuel Campbell and Jane Macgregor. They settled in Mabou NS around 1803. They left from Lochaber, Tulloch, Scotlabd and went to Pictou. They came with 5 children, Donald, John (I believe), Malcolm (My line), Mary and an unknown daughter. I've got the info from Canada, but can not get any info from Scotland. I've even tried an email from a website in Scotland and he was unable to locate anything. I can't find them on ship logs either. SO, if anyone has any info, please let me known

On my father's side of the family I have as far back as Thomas Campbell and Annie Lawrence. They had at least one child Beacham Timothy Lawrence Campbell. I am wondering what happened to them, as I could not find them in 1881 census data, however, I found BTL Campbell living with William and Mary Ann Lawrance, who I am assuming are Annie's parents. Beach married Katie Campbell.

On my mother's side I have Robert Campbell marrying Mary Adelia Campbell. Robert's parents are William and Margaret Campbell according to marriage certificate for Robert and Mary Adelia.

Would appreciate any information on either of these lines, I seem to have hit a wall.

Thomas,John,John Campbell

I am looking for John Campbell b.Argyll, Sc about 1742. came to Conn. about 1760. Fought in the Revolution War perhaps in Mass. Either he or his son John went to Western New York. His son Thomas Lopton Campbell was born in Western New York in 1784. Thomas L. Campbell was born either in Conn. or N.Y. Thomas L. Jr. was born in Oneida, N.Y. in 1809. Thomas L. Jr. had a brother Hiram Bushnell born in 1817 somewhere in N.Y. We can't find their mother because Thomas L. Sr. went to Athens Co. Ohio and remarried Sally Sarah Johnson in 1820. We assume Thomas's first wife died when Busnell was born. We think he had several other children by his first wife but we can't find them. If anyone can shed light on these early settlers please let me know.

BOOK: Robert Campbell from Ireland to St. Louis, MO "From Mountain Man to Millionaire"

I bought this book because I believe a Campbell researcher will find this a treasure trove of genealogical and historical information.

The western fur trade era--a time when trappers and traders endured constant danger from man, beast and weather--was one of the most colorful periods in American history. Although much has been written about this period and figures such as Jedediah Smith, William sublette, and Jim Beckwourth, no biographer has heretofore treated the life of Robert Campbell.

The following Campbell's are covered in the book: Robert, Virginia, James Alexander, Hugh, Lucy Ann, Mary, Hazlett Kyle, James Alexander, George Winston, and John.

The book also contains a fifteen page bibliography and an index.

Please contact me if you have an interest in this book. Put Mountain Man to Millionaire in the subject line.

Kathy@FamilyWeSearch.com

Campbell/Cox Mystery, Florida Jane, Hunt County Texas

In researching my wife's Cox line in Hunt and Hopkins Counties, Texas, we've come across a mystery. In the 1860 census there is a child, Florida Jane Campbell, living with Frederick and Mary (Marshall) Cox. Florida Jane Campbell would have been born around 1852. Fred and Mary were married around 1856. Some trees have Florida Jane listed as the first Cox child but according to the census, she is a Campbell. Also, Fred Cox's obit mentions "8 children, 6 of whom are still living." Florida Jane would make 9 children. Did Mary Marshall have a prior marriage (or child)? Did they take in an orphan? Florida Jane is an unusual name. Fred Cox was born and raised in England, all the Cox children have traditional English names, my wife descends from their daughter Elizabeth, "Lizzie" in some records. Would love any help in trying to solve this mystery. Thank you.

Herbert Jackson Campbell-Virginia

I am looking for death/burial info on Herbert Jackson Campbell. He was born in Martinsville, Va 03 Oct 1919. He divorced Cassie Knowles Campbell and moved to Hialeah, Fl where he died 26 Jun 1970. My father in law had his body moved back to Martinsville, VA for burial. I am trying to locate the cemetery in which he was buried. The name of hte cemetery has been lost in the family. If anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be appreciated; I have already contacted Roselawn Burial Park where we thought he was buried.
