Your grandmother was my aunt. She passed away before I was born. Napoleon would be your GGGgrandad as he is my GGgrandad! My Dad is Francis (aka Buck), Aileen's brother. Their father was William Camper,Jr. His father was William Camper and his father was Napoleon Camper. I have not been able to go back any further than Napoleon, and yes, he was a tool maker. He was married to a woman by the name of Mary Hunt. Let me know if you've discovered any other info.

Your cousin, Pat

She had at least two brothers -- George and "Bucky" -- don't know Bucky's first name. They are a Baltimore family. I believe Napolean was a tool maker.

I am investigating my Camper family ancestors. I am looking for additional information on Uriah Camper (b. 1831), Sarah Camper (b.1833), Annie Camper (b.1857), Susan Camper (b. 1870), and Winfield Camper (b. 1865). Family info says they were from Federalsburg, MD. I have not been able to confirm this. I know that they came to Chester, PA around 1870 or 1871. I am trying to get more info about them in Maryland. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Origin of Camper surname

I believed that the Camper surname began when Johannes Kemper changed his name to John Camper when he arrived in the Germanna Colony in 1715.
I have recently found a census record for a Fredrick Camper, b. 1815 Hanover Germany, in the 1880 census for Clay township, Ottawa County Ohio. This may be another Americanation of a German surname or it could be his birth name.
Has anyone traced a Camper direcyly back to Europe?

Please reply. I have some info on Joseph and would like to share info with you if we are related. Have a great day!

All those names are common to the Camper family. The first Camper was Johannes Kemper who immigrated in 1715 from Germany to the Germanna Colony in VA. He changed fhis name to John Camper but some of his sons kept the surname Kemper.
My line:
Jon to Harmon to John W. to Peter to John Lee to Robert Withers to William Thomas to me. The end of this line is my grandson Andrew James.
Bob

I just read your 2002 post.
All Campers are decended from Johannes Kemper who immigrated from Germany to the Germanna Colony in Virginia. There is a lot of info on Germanna Colony.
On arrival, Johannes changed his name to John Camper. Sdomne of his sons reverted to the Kemper surname so we are related to some of them.
If you search the web and sites such as RootsWeb you should be able to track your family.
Incidently the Camper line goes back to Hans Smyt in 15 century Gemany.
Bob

This is what I sent to "Wizard"

Ok it's been 8 years, but if you are still looking here are some things:
Peter, b. January 25, 1798 married Eleanor Penelope (Nellie) Obershain
, b. November 23, 1896 on March 1, 1818 in Botetourt County VA in an area that became Giles County and Blacksburg. Peter is the great grandson of Johanes Kemper aka John Camper who is the first Camper. He immigrated from Germany to the Germanna Colony in Virginia. Some of John's son reverted to Kemper but the line you are following kept Camper. My line is through Peter to John Lee to Robert Withers to William Thomas, my father.
I have the line from Hans Symt in the 15th century to my grandson.

Since Peter is my great great grandfather, we may be some form of cousins.

For some really interesting lines track Obershain back to the original Abendschon.

Bob
Just going back over some old posts. Don't know if you have found anything or if still interested.
The first John Camper changed his name from Johnnes Kemper when he arrived at the Germanna Colony in Virginia from Musen, Germany.
He had a sons Henry, John Peter, and Harman.
Harman had a son John W. who married Sarah James in 1776. Sarah has been a brickwall to me for over a year. John W. was b. 1749 in Faquier Cty and died 1844 in Giles Cty. So I assume Sarah was from one of the two.
John W. was my gggf.
Bob Camper

There are Harman and Harmon Campers. My line is from Harman Camper b. 1718 Fauquier Cty VA (parents: Johannes Kemper (John Camper) and Alice Utterback both immigrants to the the Germanna Colony in VA. Harman m.Cathrina Coontz b. 1713 in Germany (parents:Joseph (Jost) Kuntze and Anna Caterine Reinschmidt)
Harman and Cathrina's son John W. Camper is my gggf. John moved to Giles Cty VA where the family stayed until my father moved to Newport News, VA
If you have any info on this line it would be appreciated. I have information (not all documented) back to Hans Smyt in 1435.

Bob Camper

I live in Talbot County, Maryland, where Joseph Camper was born. There is a lengthy chancery record there about the inheritence left by Martin O. Camper. That record included a copy of John Camper's will (father of Joseph, Sally (my ancestor) and more children. John Camper was married to Maria Larrimore 14 Dec 1802 in Talbot County. John died in September of 1842. After Maria died, John married Elizabeth Leaverton Millis, widow of John Millis. The inheritance left by Martin was in the form of land called "Larrimore's Addition" which had to be sold to divided among the brothers and sisters still living.

The name Camper starts in the Germanna Colony in 1714. Johannes Kemper emigrated from Germany at the age of 22 and changed his name to Camper. Some of his descendents kept the name Kemper and became quite famous in Virginia history including Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. My line ended up in Blacksburg, Virginia; my grandson is presently the last of this line unless he has a son when he grows up.

Bob Camper
