This is really interesting to find this post. I am the great grand daughter of Alphonse and Maggie Brynes. My grandmother, Marguerite Victorine Campion. She married Austin LeRoy Gribben. They had four children: June Helen (my mother) Janice Mary, Robert and James.
He was awarded the Legion of Honor because he raised large sums of monies for the orphans in France during the war. Alphonse worked for Marshall Fields in Chicago for 60 yrs. He invited lace makers from France to come to the USA to make lace for the dressers he designed for a very distinguished customers all over the country. Alphonse lost Maggie and was left to raise 8 children then later he married Louise LaPointe in the Holy Cross in Chicago. He came to USA at age of 16 wearing wooden shoes with his mother, father and sister, Louisa. Alphonse could never speak English very well. My mother said that when he spoke it sounded like he had marbles in his mouth; but everyone loved him. Alphonse always designed and decorated all the windows for all the holidays and special occasions at Marshall Fields.
