Hi

I have not connected my family from Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire to the Chatteris Camps'. My first ancestor is William Camps, who dies 27 February 1748/49 in Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire. I have not yet discovered where he came from.

He was married to Mary, who died 14th September 1727 in Waterbeach, and they had one son (that I know off),James born 1726 in Waterbeach.

James married Sarah, and they had 6 sons:
James b. 1747
Robert b. 1748
William b. 1750
Edward b. 1754
John b. 1754
George b. 1758

All in Waterbeach.

I should be delighted if they fitted into your tree, but I have no information on the Chatteris ones at all.

Regards Ros

Hi there
I have traced my mothers family back to Thomas Camps who was born in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, in 1799. He had a wife named Mary, and three children,George, Nathaniel, and Abraham. Abraham was my mothers Great Grandfather. Try as I may, I cannot go back any further. We have gone back to 1523 on my fathers side. I would love to know what information you have on the Camps family. Thomas is buried in March, also in Cambridgeshire.
Best regards
Ken Rolfe

Hi Beatriz,

my name is Roger Camps. I am from Barcelona and nowadays I live in NYC.

For you and all the ones interested in the Camps last name, it is a Catalan last name. Meaning ins different languages:
Spanish = Campos
English = Fields
French = Champs
Italian = Campi

Catalonia is a region of Spain nowadays, but who claims to be an independent country as for many differential facts towards Spanish culture, Catalans have their own language (Camps being one of its words and a very common surname) and also different culture. That might be interesting to the ones who try to do a research in Spain of this name as you will never find it in Spain, only in Catalonia and the regions of Spain that once where united to Catalonia as Valencia, Balearic Islands and Aragón.

As for you Beatriz your background is with no doubt Catalan, as Guill is a very typical Catalan name too, not as popular as Camps but Catalan too.

Throughout the years I met many people who has Catalan last names and they are from different parts of Latin America most of them, since many Catalans emigrated to Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia and many other countries on the American continent.

If I can be of more help or anyone nearby NYC called Camps wants to get in touch just send me an email to: rogercamps@hotmail.com

Bests,
Roger.

Hi
I was wondering if you could help me. I have managed to trace my paternal side back to my 3x Great Grandfather, George Camps, who came from the Ely area of Cambridge too, specifically the village of Witchford. Then the trail goes cold. From records we know he moved to Chatteris in the early 1850s where he married Sarah Garrett. After her death he married again so Sarah King (nee Southwell) and moved to Stayleybridge/Ashton-under-lyne mid to late 1870s where he died c1892.
Unfortunately I'm having no luck getting any further back. One of the problems being his DoB varies about 6years. between 1828(according to marriage records to wife no.1) to 1834(death record) There is a story in the family that there are allegedly Romany Gypsy connections so this could explain the erroneous DoBs. My question is this, Is there a connection to your tree and if so do you have any info further back up the line.

Many thanks

Martin

Looking for Camps in Nova Scotia & Massachusetts

I'm interested in finding out if anyone knows of Camps living in Nova Scotia prior to 1850?

My ggg grandfather was Andrew Camps who was born about 1825 in Nova Scotia but immigrated to Lynn, Massachusetts with his wife Nancy (Harris) Camps around 1850. He served on the USS Colorado & the Ohio and then re-enlisted and served with Mass. 5th Colored Calvary during the Civil War. His life in Massachusetts is well documented but what he did prior to coming to Massachusetts remains a mystery. I'm sure he's related to Ephram & Latisha Camps of Phinney Mt. of Nova Scotia and his niece & nephew Belle & Nathan Camps who are mentioned in his obit also immigrated to Massachusetts from Nova Scotia and can be found in the census. Looking forward to hearing from anyone with information regarding the Camps family!

My family also originate in Ely Cambridgeshire, though our branch of the family moved to Rochdale, Lancashire in the late 1800's. There are still a number of Camps in Lancashire, though we are spreading to other parts of the country. My Parents moved to North Wales in the late 1960's and I currently live in Gloucester. I have some family history if you are interested.

Mike

Hi Nancy

It seems we may have a link as I am descended from William Camps younger sister Annie. From what I have found so far is that Sarah is not their birth mother as George remarried to Sarah King nee Southwell in 1873. However from what my dad has told me, there is a Gypsy connection on my grandads maternal side and I think this may be it as I am struggling to go back further. I do have the 1881 census which ties in with the rest of the info I have but in the 1871 census, although the children match up, it seems father george is 19 years older than he should be. So I dont know if this is the same person or a grandparent incorrectly listed as a parent.
would be interested in any info you may have

many thanks

Martin

I am also a descedant of the Camps of Humacao, Puerto Rico. My parents were second cousins so I have Camps on both side of my family. My maternal grandfather's name was Casildo Alvarez Camps, his mother was Petronila Camps. My paternal grandomother's name was Cruz Gonzalez Camps, her mother's name was Celestina Camps. I just started doing my family tree since I have always been told that our ancestors came from Corsica. Often people have asked me if I was Italian or French, now that my daughters are older they question where are family came from, because we have that Mediterranean look and many times not even puerorricans can tell that we are puertorrican!!! Now somenone in the family have told me that we possibly have Greek blood in us!!!I thought we were the only Camps out there since the only time I ran into someone with the last name was when I moved to Central Florida and he turned out to be family.

Hello Kate ,
I am searching the CAMPS family on behalf of a friend whose father was Frederick CAMPS but little else is known of him. He believes Frederick was related to Prof.Francis Camps and could have been his brother. Could you please let me have any information you have on Prof Camps parents, siblings etc. it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Val, South Australia

Dear Jill,

I have found two Sarah Camps born around 1815 in the 1841 census. Both were living in St Marylebone, Middlesex. One of them was not born in Middlesex, so is your most likely candidate. Her age is 30 in the census and she was a servant in the household of Robert Townsend, upholsterer, of Oxford St. Source information: HO107/680/9Registration district: St Marylebone Sub-registration district: Rectory
ED, institution, or vessel: 9 Folio: 9 Page: 9 Line: 2.

Hope this helps.
Hi Beatriz and Emma!
I am a descendent of William CAMPS--

William Camps (son of George Camps) was born April 1, 1860 in Chatteris, England, and died September 9, 1941 in Fall River, MA. He married Christina DIXON on December 3, 1882 in Mossley Old Church, England, daughter of Henry Dixon and Ann BEAUMONT.

They had eight children including my grandfather, William Dixon Camps--

William Dixon Camps born December 2, 1900 in Fall River, MA, and died November 10, 1960 in Fall River, MA. He married Nancy Good CLINTON on October 10, 1921 in Fall River, MA, daughter of Joseph Clinton and Minnie GOOD.

They had two daughters born in Fall River, MA --
Doris Minnie Camps and my mother, Ethel Nancy Camps.

If you have additional family information on any of these surnames, I would appreciate hearing from you as soon as you can answer.

I remember, as a child, visiting one of my mother's aunts in Florida who's name was Emma--she was married to John FISH. She was born Jan. 15, 1896, in Fall River, MA and died Jan. 28, 1969 (I don't know where).

Re: Camps in Cottenham / Waterbeach

Hi Shirley,

Interested to hear in your connection with CAMPS family from cottenham. I am trying to trace descendents of Richard Watts CAMPS and Mary Ann HAYDEN. Richard was born in 1850 in waterbeach and married Mary Ann HAYDEN in 1869. Their children were as follows:
1. Richard Watts CAMPS b 1869, Waterbeach
2. Sarah Janet CAMPS b 1870, Waterbeach
3. Florence CAMPS b 1872, Waterbeach
4. Esther CAMPS b 1874, Waterbeach
5. Hilda Rose CAMPS b 1876, Waterbeach
6. Agnes Ellen CAMPS b 1878, Waterbeach
7. Frances Kezia CAMPS b 1880, waterbeach
8. Ernest Richard CAMPS b 1881, waterbeach
9. Harry CAMPS b 1883, Waterbeach
10. Harold James CAMPS b 1885, Waterbeach
11. Frederick William CAMPS b 1889, Cottenham
12. Mabel Rose CAMPS b 1891, Cottenham
13. Sidney Hazel CAMPS b 1892, Cottenham
14. Marjorie Lilian CAMPS b 1894, Cottenham

As you can see the family moved to Cottenham between 1885 and 1889 and I believe the children listed would have got married there. Are any of these names familiar? If so I would love to hear from you. My email is gregory.ball@lmh.ox.ac.uk.

Regards,
Greg

My father is the eldest child from the second marriage of the forensic pathologist Prof Francis Camps, who died just after I was born (I think around 1971).
Hi Michael,

I saw your question by coincedence. As you can see I am a Camps myself. I live in the Netherlands, in the south actually.

But to come back to your question: Camps comes from Catalonia, a part of Spain in the northeast (Barcalona). The name means a fenced piece of ground. In Spanish it would be Campos.

Greets, Bart
