Robert Campton, b. 21 Jan 1842, PA; lived in Guernsey Co, OH; d 25 Nov 1911

Hi,
I'm stuck and would appreciate some help finding the parents of Robert Campton, b 21 Jan 1842, PA; lived in Guernsey Co, OH; d. 25 Nov 1911, Guernsey Co, OH(have pretty much determined he is not Robert F or Robert B Campton). He was married to Ellen Atkinson and had two sons, Everett Sherman Campton, b 1865, VA and Emmett S, b 1862, W Va. Can't determine what happened to his wife Ellen Atkinson. This Robert Campton possibly married a second time to Lydia M. Johnson and had two children, Guy and Gracie. Have found Robert, b abt 1845 (off a little) and brother James Campton, b abt 1838 residing in the Barrows household in 1850 Rome, Athens, OH census. There's also a Robert Campton, age 60, residing in Barrows household in 1860 Rome Co, OH census. I have not been able to determine if the Camptons residing with the Barrows are the line I'm seeking. Found 4 different Robert Camptons in 1840 PA censes...Any help would be appreciated. Thanks :)

I realize I'm commenting on an old post, but I noticed that Ohio and Wisconsin were mentioned.

My great-grandfather, John Henry Campton, was born in England in 1836 and was brought to the U.S. as an infant and, I believe, grew up in Kentucky and married Katherine (last name of possibly either Ashworth or Gladstone? Two of their sons had these names as middle names), who was born in Kentucky in 1857. They had four children, each born in a different state: the first, a daughter named Lilliadea in Kentucky; the second, my grandfather, Edmund Ashworth Campton, born in December 1878 in Ohio; there was another son born in Colorado in 1888, John Henry Gladstone Campton; the last, a daughter, Rose, who I believe was born in Missouri, which was where the family ultimately ended up. At one time the family lived in Milwaukee, Wisonsin. A great many Camptons hail from Wisconsin, Ohio and Missouri (where my father was born). I've always had problems finding the connections, and now everyone I knew on my father's side has long since died, and I have no contact with my first cousins. I wish you luck in finding your family connections.

Sincerely,
Elaine Campton Gherardi

I too descend from John Campton and his wife Nancy.
Their daughter Elizabeth is my direct line. She married Nelson J Long on 7 Mar 1839 in Ohio.
Nelson and Elizabeth's daughter Arminda (Minnie) is my great grandmother.Arminda was born 1851-1852 in Sugar Tree Ridge,Concord Township,Highland County,Ohio.
She married James Thomas Walden (b.1849 in Kentucky)on 4 Aug 1880 in Ontario,Canada.
I'd love to correspond with anyone related to these lines.
I see some folks on here who also descend from John Campton.
I have a question! From the info I have,it appears that John's first wife Mary Boatman died soon after their marriage and they didn't have any kids.Is this what others think?
Also, does anyone think that Nancy's surname was also Boatman? That Nancy and Mary were sisters?
I do notice that John and Nancy named one of their sons Mitchell and that is a surname in the Boatman line.Actually I have a book on the Boatmans.
Does anyone have any photos or? they would be willing to share?
Thanks,
Elaine

Okay, I'm gonna try to get this right! Floyd W. Bauer b. May 8, 1885 d. Sept. 20, 1954. Wife May Lorena Semones b. May 9, 1890 d. Aug. 2, 1964. Their children: Ella Florence Bauer Doss, Garnet A. Bauer (MRDD), Floyd H. Bauer, Forrest Bauer, Lester Bauer, Frances Bauer Gillam, Helen Bauer Gillam, Lola Bauer Sheets, Artie Bauer, Walter W. Bauer, Anna Bauer. 6 girls and 6 boys. Conrads death cert. does read b. Sept. 6, 1849 d. Jan. 9, 1919. Born in Ripley, OH. I've got a copy of the 1900 census, can't verify which date is correct, but it also reads his father was born in OH. His death cert. reads father born in Germany, mother unknown. Doesn't contain names of mother or father. Hope this helps!

I have Floyd Bauer b.on May 8,1885 in Buena Vista, Ohio. I have a copy of his obituary. What day did he die in 1954? It says his wife is Loreana May Semones, children, Lester, Forrest and six daughters. I have Garnet,Mrs. Boyd Sheets?,Kathryn, Mrs. John Doss (Ella Florence?), Mrs. Seward Gilliam ?, Mrs. William Gilliam ?. Could you give me a list of all their children?

I'm still confused on Conrad. The 1900 census reads that he was born July 1851. You said his death cert. reads Sept. 6, 1849.??
I am confused as to if this is our Conrad and Ella. Does this info. match yours? Conrad B. July 15, 1851, d. Jan. 8th or 9th, 1909. What is the date on his death cert.? He married (1882) Ella H.(Campton) Bauer b. Feb. 21, 1854 d. July 17, 1913. As far as I know they lived in the Portsmouth, Ohio area.As far as children, I have Anna Clara (who married Oscar Forinash), Floyd, Artie L., Walter and Forrest. I have Ella and Conrad married around 1882. As far as the 1900 census, she had 8 children, 5 were living. Then on the 1910 census, it indicates that she had 6 children, 5 living??? It also shows that her marriage to Conrad is her 2nd marriage which may explain some of the other children. Do you have any info. on that? What was their exact marriage date? Let me know if we are talking about the same family. Thanks. B

Yes Don, from the info I have William and James Claude were brothers..sons of John and Nancy Campton.
The info I have says that John,Robert and William Campton came to Ohio from Kentucky.I have a book called "History of the Early Settlement of Highland County,Ohio".In it,John and William are noted as being in the tanning business.John started a tannery in 1803 in New Market and William joined him.Later, about 1808,John bought land in Hillsboro and started a tannery there too.I think he sold the first business to William.

Hi Elaine,
Thank you for posting the pictures. I am currently working on this lineage. I believe Nancy's father William Campton was the brother of my great great grandfather, James Claude Campton, whose son John Higgins Campton is my great grandfather. I still have not found documentation that shows William and James Claude were brothers. If my information is correct, though, their father was John Campton (b~1786) and he and his brother William were among the earliest settlers in Highland County, Ohio, having settled there after moving from someplace in Kentucky. Can you confirm?

Pam,
I think the John and Maude Campton in the 1920&1930 Rice Lake,Barron Co. Wisc. census are probably your grandparents. Their children names match.Buried in Orchard Beech Cemetery in Barron Co. Wisc. are John A.Campton 1880-1946, Maude F.Campton (wife)1892-1932, Shirley M. Campton(dau.)1928-1942. I found WWII and a Washington state death record for LeRoy J. Campton--b. 1917 in Wisc. d.Nov 6, 1975 in Pierce Co. WA. While looking a these census I found a Pearl Campton(male) on both the 1920&1930 Rice Lake,Barron Co.census also. Pearl Campton's parents born in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Maybe Pearl and John Campton were brothers or cousins. Still haven't connected your Campton's to my Campton line. Hope this helps.

Julie
I saw your message about the Campton's, I'm not sure if there's a connection. My grandfather was named John Campton not sure of his middle name.I think he was born in rice lake , wisconsin around 1883 I don't know anything about his parents only father was born in Pennsylvania, mother Ohio I think. If you could let me know if this is the John Campton your talking about or even if he's my great grandfather named after his father. My father LeRoy John's son died several years ago and I didn't get any info from him about his family.
Pam (campton)

hi Julie, thanks for responding so fast. I did find the census about my grandfather, when I checked alittle more it states that his family came from ohio and Wisconsin so I'm not sure if there could be a family connection and finding out anything about my grandmother has been even harder to get info on.
again thank you
Pam

This is a follow-up to my post of June 7, 2008. I have been unable to document the death (date, place, cause) of John Higgins Campton, my great grandfather via his second marriage to Lizzie Moore. Can anyone send me documentation of the date, place, and/or cause of death of John Higgins Campton? He is not listed in the Idaho death index. -- Since my post last year, I have visited Owyhee County, Idaho and found the grave in the Bruneau, Idaho cemetery with the headstone "John H. Campton", but there are no dates on the headstone (photo and related ones posted with my tree on Ancestry.com). The only other incription on the headstone is "Bey Mortuary", which I have been unable to identify. I would very much appreciate receiving any obituaries, photos, bios, stories, documents, etc. regarding John Higgins Campton and his family. I would also like to re-establish email correspondence with other descendants of John Higgins Campton. My great grandfather is still a mystery to me, although I have been able to fill in some gaps during the time he lived in Idaho where my grandfather Joseph Edward Campton (1901-1982) grew up. Thanks for your assistance. -Don Campton

John Higgins Campton family

I am the Great Grandson of John Higgins Campton (b. 1851 Highland Co., Ohio) via his second wife, Elizabeth ("Lizzie") Ann (Knowles) Moore (maiden=Knowles) and my grandfather, Joseph Edward Campton (b. 1901, Cowley Co., Kansas). I believe John H. Campton died in Owyhee Co., Idaho sometime after 1920 because John, Elizabeth, and Joseph are listed in the 1920 U.S. census as residents of Castle Creek Precint, Owyhee Co., Idaho (which is where my grandfather grew up). I would very much appreciate any photos or documents (e.g., death records, marriage records, etc.) for John Higgins Campton and ancestors (and Elizabeth Ann Knowles). Several other family trees on Ancestry.com list the date and place of death of John Higgins Campton as 1918 in Highland Co., Ohio, but I believe that date is incorrect based on the 1920 U.S. census. A few other descendants of J.H. Campton from his first marriage to Ann Elizabeth Doggett have already contacted me. Any additional help regarding my Campton ancestry would be very much appreciated. Thank you. -Don Campton

I do have a listing under Schwieger on the message boards.
