Hi, i
I am related to George Buckeridge ,son of George Buckeridge, a wheelwright - George was from George's first marriage whereas my direct relative Joseph was from his second marriage. They went into business together in NZ in the 1890's (along with Elizabeth) Finding any information is proving difficult, so if you can help with any on the Buckeridges it would be greatly appreciated

I have been seeking relatives of Thomas Canavan baptised in Balla RC Church in Jan 1877, father Patt & mother Honor Murphy
resided at Lagakilleen, Belcarra, Castlebar, Co Mayo and was listed as resident with his father in the Census 1901. Most of his brothers, John, Michael, & Edward had gone to the USA and some went to Cleveland, Ohio. But they would have had an uncle living in New York and it is possible he went there.
I too have an interest in Canavan's from Mayo, as Mary Solon b.
Hi Paul,

A few years later now, but...

I'm a Canavan from Co. Wicklow (Tinahely). My grandad's first cousin was called Owen, from Avoca. I don't believe it's the same Owen but I know it's a family name. His brother Paddy still lives in Avoca, in the big house to the right side of the bridge as you're going towards the village. He's about 89 now but doing well (good stock!)

I was just doing a bit of research as nobody on my Dad's side has much of an interest in tracing their roots.

Did you manage to find out anything else in the intervening years?

Shane

Hi Gerard,

I'm very sorry, I must have missed the notification of your message. Did you find out any more information since?

I will be back in Wicklow over Christmas so hopefully I will get a chance to visit my grandfather's cousin who still lives in Avoca. If so, I will ask him about this. There were certainly several Owen Canavans in the Avoca area going back down the generations, and it's not a common name so there is a good chance that there is a connection.

In case you didn't know, Avoca is where the series Ballykissangel was filmed. It's a nice place, worth a visit!

All the best,

Shane

Hi Michael,
My ggg-grandmother Ellen Canavan McNulty is buried in the Calvary cem. in Evenston, IL. She was born in Mayo Abbey, Co. Mayo Ire. She came to America about 1860 with her children. I still do not have a full list of them. She did have a daughter Delia. I don't find that name very often. I am in CA right now and most of my records are at home.

Most of Ellen's family had already come to America, including her widowed mother Catherine Kirby Canavan. Catherine married Anthony Canavan. Catherine born about 1790. I have collected as much as I can on this family hoping someone has left enough to trace back. I did get a little on my McNulty's in the Irish records but nothing on Canavan.

Do you know what church the family went to in Evanston. My Honora McNulty Arnold (Catherine Canavan's dau) attended St. Michael's (German - Irish) on the north side of Chicago.

Karen Hartman

Hi Maggie
They could be. I have done no family research so it is more likely that you will be able to answer that question than I. However, I have a bits of family lore and old photographs, some going back to the 1880, and the Canavans in Co Longford from my scant knowledge seem to have just appeared in the last few decades of the nineteenth century, with no other relations nearby - possibly they came to the area from elsewhere a bit like the Mayor of Casterbridge. The gist of what I heard is this: in the generation before 1900 there were several Canavan brothers and one sister: one of them lived on the estate of James Mackey, the brother of Sir Henry Wilson, C in C during WWI, in Ballinalee, Co Longford (near Killoe and Corneddan) and a sister had a bacon shop in Edgeworthstown, the next parish about seven miles away, which according to family lore she (or her parent) moved into after they were evicted (from where??? I don't know) probably during 'the land war' of the 1880s. She can be identified in the 1901 census in Edgeworthsttown The Ballinalee Canavans bought out their farm from the Wilsons as part of the British government tenant buyout scheme during the same decades. The other Canavan brothers emigrated to the Argentine -as indeed a lot of Longford and Westmeath men (and some women) did. returning home as old batchelors in the late 1930s, where they died in Edgeworthstown. They were in the cattle business and a photograph of all the brothers can be seen on the Ireland Argentine/website coming back from south American in the 1890s. The Ballinalee Canavan family produced seven boys in the 1900-1920, most of whom whom emigrated to New York. There is no one of this branch of the Canavan name now in County Longford. Don't know if this is any help to you in trying to identity whether your branch is connected to them. There certainly were a few 'Jameses' in this branch. As I have said i have done no research myself.

My grandfather's name was James Lawrence Canavan. I think he was born circa 1880. He first came to Canada and subsequently settled in Takoma Park, Maryland in the 1920s. He had a twin brother Anthony, who we believe settled in the Philadelphia area. When my father visited relatives in County Mayo Ireland, he was told about the older cousin who died on the Titanic.

Hi! Thanks for your reply. It's a bit of a mystery as to exactly who this Ann or Anna Canavan was. I do know that she married my grandfatehr in Clonbroney parish and have just found out that she was from Aghafin(?)So - could this be someone related to your Canavans? I did think that Aghafin was by Edgeworthstown so now I'm really confused. Also, this woman seems to have died in childbirth around 1896 - the child was born in Aghaward, outside Balinalee. Oh well it's nice to chat with you. Let me know if you think she may be related to you? Thanks! Maggie

Kerry,
My great-great grandfather was Peter Canavan who was born in County Wicklow about 1800. He was tried for stealing a cow and given a sentence of 7 years in Australia. He arrived aboard the convict ship "Java" in November 1833. In 1838 he married Elizabeth Barry, who was a free immigrant from County Cork. One of their children, Mary Canavan, married Michael Devitt who was my great grandfather. I have been unable to find any deatails about Peter Canavan's parents or the parish and townland in Wicklow from which he came.
Regards,
Steve Devitt, Sydney, Australia.

I am searching for Kinivanes in County Clare. My theory is that the name was changed to Canavan when they got here since there are NO Kinivanes in the US phone directory - seems odd for any Irish surname not to be represented here. Anyway, the ancestor I'm sure of is Margaret Kinivane from Sixmilebridge, County Clare. Don't know if there's any connection at all, but the County Clare library has a fantastic website for genealogy and you might try looking for Kinivanes or Kenevanes

I have a Mary Ann Canavan (also from Clifden Galway Ire) who marries a John Flaherty, This John would have been born abt 1880 Mary Ann is reported to have been born about 1877. They have several children one of whom is a Michael Flaherty. But it seems every family in Clifden has at least one John, Michael, Patrick, Mary and Bridget. If there is the posssiblity of a conection I have lots I can share, but lots of blanks that I need help with too. The list of Canavan/King/Corbett Walsh/ Welsh/Foley/Coyle/Mullen/Thornton (plus the Flaherty noted above) is a list of the known marraiges that various Canavan men and women married bewteen 1880 and 1910. If this fits with anyone lets compare notes. Most of them said on their immigration paper they were going to visit their cousin Bridget in Boston. However most of my group went to New Hampshire and then on to PA.
Patrick Thornton
pthorn6780@comcast.net

Hi,
I too am researching Canavans, as my mother was a Canavan from Balina, County Mayo, West Ireland.

As you will already have realised, there are so many of them.
In reading previous threads, I have seen Ruanes and Mangan mentioned, so for you, I think the links are there, just work back from your own entry.

I have been to Ireland and met some of the Canavans whom my mum was related to.
Her grandfather was a Martin Canavan, labourer, borne 1831.
He married Mary Noone, washer woman, borne 1861. Their address was Workhouse Road.

Their first child was John, borne 1892
Martin 1898
Martin Joseph 1901
My maternal grandmother Margaret ?1905
Molly 1906
Michael 1908
Annie 1911
Norah 1910
Catherine 1912

While Mary Noone's later children were still young, she died.
After 1911, there doesnt appear to be Canavans in that area.
there are a number of relatives in the surrounding areas, but no longer in Balina.
The motherless family moved to Eniscrone.
I dont know when Martin or Mary died, so if anyone sees this and can fill in any gaps, or may perhaps know of the relatives ive mentioned, Id be very pleased to hear from you.Shortly before the death of my own mother, Margaret Canavan, born Feb 25th, 1919 (Pisces), we did manage to meet some of the Canavan descendants.
They were very hospitable and generous toward us, inspite of us being strangers, though relatives. I hope others have the good fortune we did.
The Canavans have a link to a very famous family in America, but thats another storey.

Maureen
Hi, your posting re your CANAVAN`s has possibly provided me with an answer I have been seeking for the past 12 years.
I also have a John CANAVAN who migrated to Victoria and have always wondered whether he was connected in any way with the John who married Sarah TRAINOR.
Could you give me a call on normanarch@iprimus.com.au there are a few things I would like to run past you, if that`s ok with you.
Norm.
