Hi, Susan,

Sent you an email ....hope you get it. If not, post here and let me know. I think you can also just attach the copies of the papers to one of these messages by clicking on "attach file" below and selecting your document.

Just returned from Ontario. Have lots of tombstone photos. Let me know if there are any you need and I'll see if they are among the ones I took.

Thanks!
Mary

Hi,

So if you click on "Replay", just above the "post" button is a green link that says "attach file." If you click on that, you'll get a "Browse" button that allows you to locate the file on your computer. Just double click on that file name/or click on "open" and it will attach the file.

Info: I did not have the death info on Lucy, but have a range of dates for Thomas Nathaniel Sr....bet. 1855 and 1860. Thirza Belfrey, Henry's first wife, died in March 1860. Olive was married to Elias Widdifield. William Cane Niles married Amelia Belfry, daughter of Christopher and Charlotte Belfry. Married Oct. 8, 1878. He was from California and that is where they returned. His nephew, and namesake, eventually ended up in California as well. I have a maiden name of "Martin" for Nancy, Lucy's mother. Lucy's brother, William Cane owned a pencil factory in Newmarket and was mayor of Newmarket for a period of time. William married Catherine Belfry, sister to Thirza and Christopher. Lucy's son, Thomas Nathaniel Jr. died in 1890 just a little over a month before his wife, Margaret Rutledge. Their daughter, Olive, went to live with Henry Stiles Cane, a nephew of Thirza and Henry Dodd Stiles. I don't have anything further back on Thomas Sr. although I believe the family also came up from the US, possibly from around the Albany area. I did find a biographical sketch of Henry Dodd Stiles that said he came originally from Kentucky and was a merchant, magistrate and leader in the ranks of the Reform party and took part in the War of 1812.

Hi. Yes it is the same Lucy Cane Niles Stiles. The papers I have are notes made by Eckbird Seymour Cane in 1899 and they are based on information given him by Lucy. There are only 2 pages and I am not sure how accurate the notes are but I will send them to you. I don't have a huge amount on Lucy's family but there is a bit. I have gone back as far as Samuel and Agnes (Nancy) Cane, Lucy's parents.I am descended from Edward Cane and Ann Thompson. Send me your e mail and I will send the notes and anything else I have that you want. I live in Winnipeg. Where are you?
Susan Smith
chasmith@shaw.ca

I have been researching the Niles family of East Gwillimbury Ontario. This goes back to Lucy Cane Niles Stiles. I was very excited to see your reference to her papers of 1899. I have to believe this is the same person I've been trying to find information about with all the same names! She was married to Nathaniel Niles and then to Henry D. Stiles. Her brother, William Cane was very influential in the area, owning a factory and becoming mayor of Newmarket. Could you let me know how I might be able to get a copy of her papers? Thanks!

Hi! I'd love to get some more information about the Niles family. I've managed to find a lot online, but there are some holes in it. To refresh, my great-great-aunt was Margaret Rutledge Niles married to Thomas Nathaniel Niles Sr. and Lucy Cane, sister to William Cane. When Margaret and Thomas died (I have their obituaries), it appears the boys went to live with my great-grandmother, Eliza, and her daughter Annie. Later it looks like Thomas went to live with Annie and her husband, George Stephens. Olive I have as living with her father's cousin, Henry Stiles Cane. Correct? I did locate Olive's obituary online and know that she is buried in Queensville with her parents. I have William Cane Niles as going first to North Dakota and then eventually Everett Washington. His wife I have as Fedelia or Katherine Fillner. I show three children for them, William C.T., Margaret and Olive. I have no information on any of them. It looks like William and Delia were divorced at some point prior to 1930 and William went to California where he married Anna. Thomas, your grandfather, I have as marrying Jennie Wallace in 1912. I do not have a DATE OF DEATH for him or for Jennie. The children I have for Thomas are Olive Elizabeth, Kenneth George, Thomas Earl, Wesley (Irene) and Jennie Doreen Margaret. I have only one child for Wesley and Irene. That about sums up my information. If there is additional information you can provide, that would be great! Do you live in the Toronto area? I'll actually be back there next week, although the trip will be short and not sure how much time I'll have to see everyone!:) Again, thank you so much.

Olive Elizabeth Niles was my aunt and sister Doreen Margaret and to my father William Wesley Niles.

This is quite exciting for me as it confirms what I have been trying to prove for quite a while, plus more. I didn't know about John, but the others I have documented fairly well. I live in Kitchener, Ontario. And you? I searched the parish records of the Cavan church and found several pertinent records, including the burials of Samuel and Agnes/Nancy. She in 1831 and he in 1837. Where did you locate Lucy Ann's notes?
Sharon

The first information I have came from notes written By Lucy Cain Niles Stiles in 1899. There were some errors I found but this is what she claimed. Samuel, his wife Agnes, his brother John (a widower) moved to Albany N.Y. from Ballymena, Antrim County, Ireland. Samuel was a shoemaker. They moved to Canada and settled in Cavan On. near Knowlson's. Sam and Agnes's oldest son John ran away and they never found him. Agnes caught a bad cold and died. Sam, very depressed, went for long walks. One day he got tired, lay down in a carpentry shop owned by the Thompsons. It caught on fire and he died.(1834) Both Sam and Agnes were buried at the English church near Knowlson's. I think this is St. John's Anglican in Ida. The wooden markers decayed and I don't think one can tell where the graves are.
They had 6 kids.
John who ran away, Edward who married Ann Thompson,(They are my GGgrandparents.) Margaret (your relative), James,William, and Lucy Ann.
I have very little information on your family but I have some on the others.
Where do you live?
Susan
I believe Jacob was the son of Edward Cain and Ann J Thompson who married in Caven Twp 28 Apr 1836. Edward was a shoemaker and died between the 1848 and 1850 censuses in Caven. Ann and the children moved to Manvers Twp to live with her family. My theory (unproven) is that Edward was the son of Samuel Cane and Nancy Martin and was born in Albany, New York, and that he is the brother of my great-great-grandmother Margaret Cane Naylor. Other siblings may be James, William and Lucy. I have more information about these families if you wish to persue it.
Sharon Naylor Neville
I am also looking for info about my great grandmother May Cane/Cain b. 1875 in "Canada English". She married Adam Henry Smith (b. 1870 in Ohio) about 1899 and they lived in Stark County Ohio in 1900. The 1900 census shows May C's mother also born in "Canada English". This census also shows that May emigrated to the U.S. in 1880.

Maybe a family connection?

Thanks for any info you may have learned since your posting!
Stephanie
stephaniej1013@yahoo.com

Hi Georgina cane from New Zealand, this is great as I was on F/B a couple of weeks ago & found some Canes from Italy & was wondering how they would be related. Your story was interesting as I too was told the Cane Branch of the family were from Bulgaria but also Ireland & during the potato Famine moved too England. Also there maybe some truth in the name being Jewish as Cane is a Biblical name& I believe Jewish?
I have only begun researching my Fathers side of the family who came out to N.Z. in 1928 from Southhampton, England. I so far have gone back a generation on my grandfathers side of the Cane Family, would be interested to know more.
Regards Georgie

I had to have a giggle over your comment about liking alcohol as it's true. Many a 'hoolie' was held. When visiting Uncle Allan and Auntie Millie - as an adult - sherry was nearly always offered and my Uncle used to make homebrew.

The lounge in their home generally had the door shut, especially after it had been cleaned. Auntie Millie was very fastidious about a clean / tidy home without her windowsills being cluttered - especially in the kitchen.

With my father being a musician they generally had their own live music. When partying with my uncle and aunt the children usually were put to bed in the house until it was time to go home - not that you slept much with the combination of the escalating party noise and cousins chatting as they do.

Auntie Millie's funeral was held at Avondale and we went to the New Lynn RSA for drinkies etc afterwards.

I am doing the family history too and I came across these posts ;One thing to remember is other Cane families. my Canes were farmers from EastSussex, they are descendent from edward cane and Mary Earle, my grandfather John migated to Australia in 1892 when he was 10 years and his grandmother;. Philadelp[hia Marchant died. her ancestors were from belgium. I wonder whether edward and mary were from Ireland?? John Cane had ancestors amongst English nobility through his grea grandmother rosemary r cane

Hi bumblee, very sorry for not replying sooner to your message but I have had over 4,000 e-mails to reply to & I've just got to yours. I was very interested to hear that Dad's sister Millicent was married to your uncle. May I ask who he was as I have a lady who said Millicent was married to 1 of her relations. Are you able to e-mail me at georginacane@live.com
I'd be very interested to know who she was married to & the names & birth dates of the children if you have them.
Kindest regards
Georgina Cane

Hi Sandra, My apologies for not replying sooner,I have over 4,000 emails & I've just got to yours. So great that you have a connection to the family, I had to laugh when you said that Dennis Swain was the black sheep of the Family as that is usually my term. Anyway I've spent the last 3 months researching my father & have discovered after 58 years I have a sister, what a surprise. I know Millicent was 13 when they came to N>Z> an was born in 1913, I'm hopefully meeting with my Auntie her younger sister at the begining of April so I maybe updated with more news for you. I will definitely try & find out what happened with your Dennis, I do know that most of the brothers & sisters of Millicent, (my father's sister) all had more than 1 marriage, I believe they all had a passion for alcohol,so maybe why so many marriages. Please keep in touch if you find anything more out regarding the Cane Family, Kindest regards Georgie Cane

I have found a William Cane son of William & Magaret Cane who were in Wales in 1891. Father was a Draper.Old Williams' father was Alson William Cane who I think was born in 1833. He married Jane Haines(b London) married around 1860 had 7 children, Charles S Cane b1861, Alice M S cane B 1864, Louisa S Cane B 1868, Benjamin A Cane B 1870, James Selby Cane B 1871, Emily Cane 1874, John S Cane B 1877. I've also got William Cane 1833,his father was William a saddler in 1857. I'm not 100% sure but william will tie in with my fathers family somewhere along the line as he was a Cane from London England. Hope this helps abit & thank You for your posts as they have been very helpful, Regards Georgina Cane.

Thomas and Margaret had three children that I have found. Olive Lucy (b1875) became a nurse and worked at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence at least until 1940 when she was a house mother at the nurses' home. She crossed the border at Buffalo in 1941 and that's the last I have found. I assume she never married. There is also a Miss Olive L Niles in Toronto in the 1945 voters' list, so she may have lived there in retirement.
Thomas Marvin Niles (b 1887) married Jennie Wallce in Newmarket in 1912 and had a daughter Olive Elizabeth in 1913.
I'm pretty sure that William Cane Niles (b 1882)married Fidelia (Delia) Fillner about 1908 either in Minnesota or North Dakota. They had 3 children, William Margaret and Olive, but I think the marriage must have ended in divorce and William remarried to Anna T. He is a millwright at a packing house and emigrated in 1904. This coincides with a gravestone with the correct birth date in Westminster Memorial Park, Westminster, Orange County, California, and the California Death Index. Happy to help further if you are interested. I am trying to build the Cane family tree. I think Lucy Cane (Nathaniel's wife) is sister not only to William Cane of some renown in Newmarket, but also to my gggrandmother Margaret Cane, and also two others, James and Edward (though sometimes the spellings changed).
Sharon

Thomas & Margaret (Rutledge) Niles -- connected to Cane Family?

I am researching the Niles family of East Gwillimbury, ONT. Thomas Nathaniel Niles was the son of Thomas Nathaniel Niles and Lucy Cane. When Thomas (the son) and his wife (Margaret Rutledge) died in 1890, their daughter went to live with Cane relatives in Newmarket. William Cane Niles was another son (he was married to Amelia Belfry). Trying to find information about these families and to track down information on descendents of Thomas and Margaret. Thanks.

Yes that is the same family. According to a bio of William, the family came up to Cavan Twp in Ontario from Albany, NY, probably in the mid 1820s. William moved to the Newmarket area where he was a successful manufacturer.

The Canes I have were born in the U.S., all, I think, in Albany, New York. Their father was Samuel who was either born in the U.S. or Ireland. All the Canes/Kanes/Cains I have found are Irish and Christian. The ones in my ancestry have all been Protestant (mostly Church of England) though many others are Catholic.

I have done very little research on the Cane family as it is not a major family...just one that is loosely connected. The William Cane I have was a businessman in Newmarket Ontario. He was also the first mayor. His factory manufactured, among other things, pencils. The family seems to have come from the US up to Canada. Probably sometime after the Revolution. That's about all I have.

I have had a break over Christmas & have just read your e-mail today. Things are a little sketchy but I have a William looks like two of them, the 1st one was a saddler maybe 1857 or born in 1857 not sure , apparently in or lived in Wales in 1891 his wife is Magaret & his father was Alson William Cane. Now we do have A Samuel Cane, sorry about this as I just wanted to let you know that I've read your e-mail, but once I can figure out whom is married to whom I can reply properly.
I have William Cane and Lucy Cane Niles....children of Samuel Cane and Nancy Martin. William married Catherine Belfry. Lucy married Thomas Nathaniel Niles who died in 1860. Lucy then married Henry D. Stiles who was the widower of Thirza Belfry who died in March of 1860 following an accident. Thirza was sister to Catherine. Another connection to the Belfry family was through Lucy's son, William Cane Niles who married Amelia Belfry, daughter of Christopher Belfry.

Here is a little information I have regarding Henry Cane:
Came to the US 8 Nov 1882. He went to Brighton Proprietary School and won an award in 1836. Was an architect. Allegedly was commissioned to build a palace for Maharajah of Kooch-Behar (Cooch-Behar). In 1890 he lived at 27 Montgomery in Portland, Oregon with his son Harry (Henry Jr.) listed as a boarder. His son Arthur was a well known artist in Corona, California who continued to paint after he went blind.

Yes I live in the USA-Tucson, Arizona. Where do you live?
Marybeth

Hi my name is georgina (georgie) cane from New Zealand. My father was George Frederick Cane born 1924 London (maybe Middlesex) His parents John Thomas Cane & Elizabeth Maud nee Harmon immigrated with their 8 children from Southampton on the 31st July 1925 to New Zealand.George is a family name & there possibly is a connection as the family was from the London area. Also one of my father's brothers is called Charles. Please reply with what you find out as I'm researching this side of my family. I think they originated from Wales during the potato famine. Yours sincerely georgina cane
