Canfield George/Veterans Affairs

Local veterans make push for increase in services
By SKYLER SWISHER, Staff Writer
May 7, 2012
Posted in: East Volusia Tagged:Ormond Memorial Hospital ,veterans A new 1.2-million-square-foot veterans medical center in Orlando is expected to open by the end of 2013. (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs) 'Bursting at the sides'

Local veterans want to see more medical services provided in Volusia and Flagler counties, and officials say the two local clinics have see a huge increase in demand.

Daytona clinic outpatient visits

FY 2007: 144,032

FY 2008: 147,689

FY 2009: 155,520

FY 2010: 162,046

FY 2011: 162,739

Percentage change 2007-11: 13 percent

Orange City clinic outpatient visits

FY 2007: 6,324

FY 2008: 8,021

FY 2009: 13,026

FY 2010: 16,621

FY 2011: 19,312

Percentage change 2007-11: 205 percent

SOURCE: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
George Canfield stormed the island of Okinawa for his country.

He saw bodies floating in the choppy Pacific. He watched as warships lobbed shells into mountains filled with enemy soldiers.

Now at the age of 85, he sat at a table in his modest mobile home in the Holly Forrest community in Holly Hill. Sunshine streamed through the front window, illuminating a basket filled with medicine bottles.

When he spoke of his time in the service, his jaw quivered, and his eyes welled up. He tried hard to hold back tears.

But memories of combat during World War II weren't the only thing on Canfield's mind this particular day. He also wondered how he would get medication he needs paid for by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. He'll have to see a specialist in Orlando, a roughly two-hour round trip that's a big burden for Canfield.

He's not alone. Some of the area's more than 60,000 veterans are pushing for expanded and more comprehensive medical services in Volusia and Flagler counties. Local veterans clinics are "bursting at the sides" with a rapidly growing patient load, officials said, and some locals want to know why more of an effort wasn't made to convert the old Ormond Memorial hospital into a veterans facility.

Canfield said he was told he needed to see a cardiologist at the Orlando VA Medical Center to get three of his prescriptions approved before the agency would pay. Two other doctors, one of which is based at a veterans clinic in Daytona Beach, had signed off on the medication, Canfield said.

He's afraid to drive on Interstate 4, and taking a bus could consume as much as 10 hours of his day.

"It just ain't right," Canfield said. "It is unfair for us to go to Orlando."

MIXED REACTIONS

It's for that reason many veterans felt a surge of exasperation when they learned of Florida Hospital's plans to demolish an abandoned hospital in Ormond Beach.

It didn't seem right to tear down an empty hospital when a need for care exists in the community, they reasoned. Local officials say they listened to their concerns and tried to push the issue. So far, though, their request hasn't borne fruit and the empty hospital is in line to be demolished this summer.

Before moving to Daytona Beach, 62-year-old Larry Caldwell, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, lived 15 minutes away from a major veterans facility in Indianapolis. He considered it to be a great system that provided top-notch care.

His experience in Volusia County has been different. The VA maintains two outpatient clinics -- one in Daytona Beach and a smaller community clinic in Orange City.

Specialized care requires travel to the Orlando VA Medical Center, a facility that is widely regarded as being insufficient for the area's needs, or the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville. Seeing a dermatologist or getting a colonoscopy requires Caldwell to drive to Orlando.

Meanwhile, in Volusia County, Caldwell said primary-care appointments at the Daytona Beach clinic must be made months in advance, waits can last hours and the parking lot is jammed.

"It's a madhouse," Caldwell said.

Efforts to improve the services offered to Central Florida veterans have been plagued with delays and cost overruns. Ground was broken in 2008 on a 1.2-million-square-foot hospital at Lake Nona Medical City in southeast Orange County.

The hospital was slated to open in October, but that date has been pushed back to December 2013. The project is also expected to run $120 million over its $665 million budget.

Not all veterans speak critically of the VA, though. Some interviewed while leaving the Daytona clinic said they were pleased with the service they received.

Gary MacCuley, a disabled veteran who moved to DeLand from Arizona, said he has nothing but good things to say about the VA.

"They treat me like a king," he said.

USS Iowa Battle Ship

Members of the original USS Iowa crew read the names of the 47 dead crewmen, in front of the historic ship’s 16-inch guns.
advertisement Michael McEnteggart can still hear the explosion – smell the smoke – see the bodies of his fellow crewmen. The ghastly scene aboard the USS Iowa has lived with him, every day for 23 years.

“I was right next to the turret when it exploded.” McEnteggart said, his eyes trailing off in memory. “My space filled up with smoke.”

Forty-seven of McEnteggart’s fellow crewmen died that day in an explosion in the Iowa’s gun turret two, as the ship conducted exercises off of Puerto Rico. Immediately after the explosion, McEnteggart suited up in fire gear and entered the turret. It was already too late.

“It was dark, it was smoldering and there were bodies lying around,” said McEnteggart. “We put the fire out.”

A year later, the ship was decommissioned and stored among in the floating naval purgatory of the mothball fleet in Suisun Bay. The anniversary of the explosion was marked back East with memorials each year, but never on the ship.

But last November, the Navy awarded custody of the Iowa to the Pacific Battleship Group. The team plans to tow the ship to Southern California where it will become a floating museum. With the ship now undergoing restoration in the shipyards of Richmond, crewmembers had their first opportunity to hold their annual memorial back on the ship.

“I think it’s important to honor the people that were in the turret,” said Iowa crewmember David Canfield. “To do so onboard is an incredible step.”

At 9:55am, the exact time of the explosion, three crew members from the ‘89 crew began reading the names of the 47 dead. With each name, the chime of the ship’s bell reverberated across the its aged wooden deck.

Canfield said the ritual aboard the ship provided some closure. But even after 23 years, he said he still grapples with the memories of the friends he lost.

“You do kind of deal with survivor’s guilt,” Canfield said. “Sooner or later you have to come to grips with the fact it’s not my fault I that I survived.”

The official investigations that followed the explosion threatened to overshadow the tragedy itself. The Navy’s initial investigation claimed a crew member had intentionally caused the explosion, as the result of a turbulent homosexual relationship with another crew member.

But a second investigation by an independent group of scientists found that explosion was more likely the result of human error. The Navy apologized to the families of the two crewmen, although it never officially recanted its theory the explosion was intentional.

Canfield said he has a well-rehearsed answer whenever mention of the investigation comes up.

“I believe what happened on April 19th 1989 was the result of a comedy of errors and was in every way an accident,” Canfield said.

As the 47th name was read, and the last vibration of the ringing bell had dissipated, McEnteggart stepped to the microphone to speak. All around, the historic ship was covered in tarps -- signs of the frenetic work to get the ship ready for its scheduled May 20th departure for Long Beach.

“Right after this ceremony I’m going to get back in my coveralls and I’m going to go to work,” said McEnteggart with a forceful bravado. “That’s what they’d want and that’s what I want.”

Almeda Canfield

I'm looking for an Almeda Canfield b. 9 Jan 1802 possibly of Essex County, NY. She married Nathaniel Martin in Fleming (Aurelius), Cayuga, New York in 1823. They had the following children: Polly Ann, Johanna, Edward S., Abbie Sophia, and Maryette or Marietta. They moved to Oakland County, Michigan with some of the Martins around 1835, and then ultimately to Salem, Washtenaw, Michigan, where she died in 1879. I don't know of any Canfield relatives. Does anyone have any Canfields in these times and locales?

On a side note--Almeda's son Edward on the 1920 census lists his mother's native tongue as Welsh. Also, some of her children occasionally list mother's birthplace as Vermont on various censuses. These could be important clues, or red herrings.

Thanks in advance for any help, and Happy Connecting!

Is this is the Cora & George that lived in Monroe County, Michigan and had children Claud, Cecil, Archie, Lawrence? If so, there are two marriage records on FamilySearch.org.
Both records (for Archie and Lawrence) list father as George Canfield and mother as Cora Watson. I could not find any record of a Cora Watson.

Frank L Canfield PA, NY and then to Iowa

Someone visits or visited Flora Alice Hall Canfield's grave and left flowers within the last few years. Who was it????? I would love to know!

Looking for Frank Canfields parents who I believe were from PA. Frank (b. 25 APR 1850) married in NY and then he and his bride in 1877, Flora Alice Hall went to Iowa where they had two known children, Lois and Wallace Robert.

I am wondering if he had family in Marshalltown, IA? He died in MN. Why did the family go to MN?

It is suggested he follows the Thomas Canfield and Pheobe Crane line.

**NOTE: Thanks to cancamp who is on this board, Frank Canfield's death certificate was received and also confirmation on who his parents were; J. William and Lucy. I can not thank her enough for the help!

Canfield Charles A. wildcatter

By Bob Pool, Los Angeles Times

January 9, 2012
It almost seemed as though oil drilling rigs were ready to tap into Los Angeles' first petroleum field again.

But the workers setting up a pair of derricks south of Echo Park last week were plugging some of the city's oldest wells — not drilling new ones.

The sealing of the long-abandoned wells by Allenco Energy to make way for a 45-unit affordable housing project marks the end of an era for the Los Angeles City Oil Field, which sparked Southern California's oil boom 120 years ago.

The city's first commercially successful oil well was drilled about 350 feet away, at the corner of Glendale Boulevard and Rockwood Street.

In 1892, pioneering oil wildcatter Edward L. Doheny and partner Charles A. Canfield used picks and shovels and, finally, a sharpened 60-foot-long eucalyptus tree trunk to drill about 200 feet down near the corner of Glendale Boulevard and Colton Street.

At first, their shallow well produced less than 10 gallons of thick, fuel-grade oil a day. But that was enough to begin the stampede for black gold that quickly spread across the Los Angeles Basin and beyond, and made Doheny a rich man.

Soon, drillers were sinking their pumping pipes as deep as 900 feet. When oil at that level started to run out, they bore down to 1,200 feet, then 1,500 feet. Most Los Angeles oil was found no deeper than that.

Four and sometimes five wells were drilled on small residential lots along a narrow swath that extended the Los Angeles City Oil Field about 31/2 miles from the Chinatown area south of Dodger Stadium west to Berendo Street. Tent cities sprang up to house bootleggers and prostitutes who streamed in behind the growing horde of oil drillers.

Modern oil field maps on file with the state's Division of Oil, Gas & Geothermal Resources show that about 1,250 wells were drilled into the field before it was sucked dry. When that happened, drillers and speculators moved on to untouched reservoirs in hilly areas in Long Beach, Santa Fe Springs, Inglewood and Torrance.

One of the first eager young oil hunters to join the Doheny rush was Edward A. Clampitt, who had arrived in Los Angeles in 1888. He is listed in state records as the operator responsible for the five wells at the corner of Glendale Boulevard and Rockwood Street.

Although state oil well records are sketchy before 1915, Clampitt's wells are believed to have been sunk before 1900. Later he would own oil-producing land in the Newhall Pass area and serve on the Los Angeles City Council.

Petroleum geologist Dale Kunitomi, who has studied Southern California oil fields since 1967, is among those who are convinced that Clampitt and his colorful family were the inspiration for the Clampett clan in the CBS TV series "The Beverly Hillbillies." It ran from 1962 to 1971 and starred Buddy Ebsen as family patriarch Jed Clampett.

"I went to Belmont High School in the early 1960s, and you would see Clampitt Oil Co. signs on oil field installations up there," Kunitomi said. "I said to myself: So the 'Beverly Hillbillies' are real!"

Kunitomi said early well-plugging was often a casual procedure. "They'd take rocks and debris and toss it down the hole. But pressure can build up and water can seep beneath the oil and push it up," and methane gas can leach out of the ground, he said.

The potential threat from seeping methane and hydrogen sulfide prompted Los Angeles school officials to halt construction of the half-built Belmont Learning Complex in 2000. Finishing the project, now called the Roybal Learning Center, at the edge of the Los Angeles City Oil Field doubled the final cost to more than $400 million.

Don Drysdale, a spokesman with the Division of Oil, Gas & Geothermal Resources, confirmed that such things as old telephone poles were used as oil well plugs before rules were tightened in the 1970s.

These days, rules spell out the type of casing and amount of concrete plugging that has to be done and specify that a "diligent effort shall be made to recover junk" from abandoned wells.

The city has issued a demolition permit for the restaurant, butcher shop and office building that operated near the old wells until recently, and awarded a grading permit to allow plugging to begin, said David Lara, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety. Although abandoned wells fall under the jurisdiction of the state, the city also has rules about escaping methane gas.

The affordable apartments will be developed in conjunction with the Filipino Workers Center by LTSC Community Development Corp., operated by the Little Tokyo Service Center. Construction on the $20.5-million project will start in April and take about 18 months, said Takao Suzuki, director of real estate development for the service center.

Because there may be seven abandoned oil wells on the site instead of the five shown on state records, his organization has allocated $1 million for plugging costs, he said.

bob.pool @latimes.com
My name is Willeen Chatham Young. I don't have any more information on the Campfield/Davis/Stout/Smith lines. I was looking for Bertram lines. My grandmother was a daughter of Sebastian William Bertram who was son of Peter and Christina Bertram. If I am correct, Luella's mother Mary would have been a sister to my ggrandfather Sebastian William Bertram. We are cousins. Do you have any dates for Charles Smith, Luella's third husband?. Do you have any information on Christina parents? I am using a friends ancestry account, please contact me at willeenyoung@yahoo.com.
