Hi Nic,
Yes, I would be very interest should you be able to send details. My e-mail is < porsgrunn1843@yahoo.co.uk > James Cann (1861), who is also a coach/wheelwright painter, lived in Stanhope Street, Camden Town. His eldest son, George Cann was born 1896, Camden. None of the sibling continue in the business and the family broke up. George Cann (1896) is farmed out to his cousin, my grandmother, Martha Graefe. Kind regards, Rob Graefe
Its almost certainly the same George Cann. Cann Coachworks operated in Miller Street in Camden Town at the beginning of the 20th century and built lovely bodies for Rolls-Royce and other cars of that time and especially what were called boat-tailed cars. I can send you photos of examples if you give me your email address. Interestingly Cann of Camden Town was also commissioned to build the body of the second Rolls-Royce ever made.

My family were also coachbuilders in Hertfordshire but sadly we never made it big!!!
My George Cann was a Coachbuilder/wheelwright in London. I am not aware of the family connection with Roll Royce. He appears to be with his brother Robert, coach trimmer in Ireland between 1859 & 1867. They were both born in St Thomas, Exeter. George on the 15/3/1829. They are of 7 siblings. Abraham is a coach painter, James is a harness maker, & William is an iron moulder. Abraham & James also appear in London. George Cann has a son, James who is also a coach/wheelwright painter. Whether he continued his father George's business. I know not. Should you feel that they are the same George Cann, I would be very interested in any information you have. I have more details of their early ancestry. I am the GG Grandson of George Cann (1829) Regards, Rob.
From Ancestry "England and Wales Christening Records": William Thomas George Cann was born January 11, 1898, christened February 6, 1898, at Bristol...parents are William and Harriet.
There is a possible marriage for William and Harriet in FreeBMD: William Cann married Harriet Dunn (at least they are on the same page) at Barton Regis Registration District in the 4th quarter of 1896.
Harriet and young William are living at St. Jude Parish, Bristol, Glos. in the 1901 census, but William Sr. is not with them. Harriet is "m"..married.
Linda

Hi L837
Thanks for your message.I think that you are correct. It's early days as far as I'm concerned in tracing my family tree so your information is helpful.
The address in Litchdon St seems to match the census records for 1891 as Grace is shown as a widow. The names are carried through the family as well. My great Aunt, daughter of Charles Wade Cann (aged 99!) is named Grace. Her brother was Richard William Cann, his son, my Uncle, was also Richard.
Charles Wade was also a carpenter/builder as was my grandfather Richard William. The only relation I have who carries the name now is my cousin Alison Cann.
I'll understand if you don't answer this- What is your interest in the Cann family?
Regards,David Nicholls

You're probably correct in all you've mentioned. I was unaware of the village in England. I've noticed that many of the trees here on ACOM do trace their ancestors to England. But they don't end up in Louisianna. My question then would deal with how so many of them also migrated to Louisianna. The Huegonots migrating to LA was my closest assumption. More research into the plantation owner's heritage is needed before we will know where this group of Canns came from.
Thanks for the additional info.

Hi

There is a lot of debate about where the name Cann originates. There is a village in Dorset England called Cann, but this either originates from the inhabitants and families called Cann or from an old english place name. One of the most likley sources is from the French town called Caen (sounds like Cann when spoken. Supporters of William the Conquere were given lands as gifts when he invaded Engald. Many names were similar to John de Caen (John of Caen); eventually the de was dropped and spelling changed to names like John Can or John Cann.

Stop it at 45 seconds.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WdKMBIV3fc

I tried to post it on Ancestry with no luck. It was an article done by the NY Times. I thought it was really cool. Of all the stones they could have shown....

Are you a descendant of John or Baldwin Cann? My husband is.

Hope you find it as interesting as I did!!
Regards, Pam

Hello JohnLewisCooper,
Henry also had a son, Aubrey Cann b. 1912 in Monroe d. 2005 with my children's ggrandmother, Leola Johnson Gray. These brothers are both descendants of Jerry Cann b. abt. 1840 in AL. Their mother, I believe was Meloina Cann b. AL abt. 1822.
But, I've been researching where the name comes from and if it has any thing to do with the Huegonots from Cannes, France and their flee to Louisiana and possibly the Bayou des Cannes. Could the plantation owner have had plantations in both AL and LA?
It's strange how a lot of the Canns you have the names married or something to do with them coincide with names that I have maybe they are just common names?
I have Porter connection Bell Connection and many others that keep popping up while I am looking at your Canns but obviosly none are showing in Norfolk UK where mine were born.
Some very definate Surname connections though.
The more you look the more you see but I am one for branching out and looking for things quite deep that others may not have found?
Moira

womble99,

I have looked, and while I currently have 10 entries for one variation of "Frederick" Cann or another, I have nothing that would appear to match the one you refer to. My Cann ancestors go back to the 16th century in the Bristol area though, but there are scattered families that I have been trying to connect all over the UK, including the Norfolk area. You will find what I have online at the following link:

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~decann/genealogy/mas...

You will find about 2,000 Cann entries there, though much of what I've researched have migrated to eastern North America. Would you be willing to share information on your Cann ancestors with me so I can research it and try to connect it with my own data? If you would be willing to share any information with me, I will be happy to do likewise and share in kind with you.

I do not want to publish my email address here to keep it from being harvested by spammers, but you will find it at the bottom of the above webpage or by clicking my name above, if you want to contact me that way. I am also Admin of this board (and list) so you will also find my name and address by clicking the "Board Information" link in the upper right corner of this board. You can also simply reply to this board post. I will be hoping to hear from you.
Hello Jen . It is a long time since you posted your message , but still worth a try. It is possible my Great-Grandmother was Elizabeth Cann Dau. of William and Mary from Woolfardisworthy . The family moved to Darlington > William was a gamekeeper. She may have married my Great-grandfather John Abbott from Leyburn North Riding . I am very interested in ANY information you may have on the family please . The other names you have mentioned are not names I have come across yet .I have a couple of other people looking for members from this 'elusive ' family . Regards Ann

Have one member from the Bowmanville area. Don't know if we are in anyway connected. My Grandfather was Henry William Cann born 1891 died in a mine accident in 1942. Please advise.
Harold Cann

Hi atkins 959...The only Fred Cann I have in my family tree is my grandfather who was born in 1871 in Massachusetts, he is the father of Clarence Cann my father. Also Fred Cann had 3 other children...Arthur, George one daughter Ethel. Yes I believe they did originate from England, but I haven't been able to get beyond Fred Cann from Massachusetts above.
...My father Clarence Cann was born in December 1904. The only other Fred Cann is my brother who was born in 1936. Funny you say your grandmother's name was Alice, and that happens to be my name. Also I had a cousin John Cann now deceased and I have a brother George Cann. It's possible we are related somewhere along the line. Alice (Cann) Walther.
