I come down this line from Pleasant's brother James B. Cannaday who married Charlotte Agnew in Floyd County, VA.
I have 8 Stephens and 3 Stevens in my data base.
1. Stephen Pleasant Cannaday (1882-1962) is the son of Riley and Mary Jane (Foley) Cannaday. He married Clara Pencie Turner and they have several children still living in this area.
2.	Your Benjamin and Elviry Elizabeth (Foley) Cannaday also had a Stephen born 9 June 1893. I have no other information on him.
3.	Stephen H. Cannaday, son of James N. and Sarah (Young) Cannaday, died in 1871. He served as sheriff of Franklin County and was never married.
4.	Stephen H. Cannaday (1825-1879) son of William "Patrick Billy" and Martha (Wright) Cannaday, married Elizabeth Lemons. From his dates, he could have very well served in the Civil War, though I don't have it listed. However, since most of these Stephens are not my direct line, I have not researched them as much as others.
5.	My grandfather was also Stephen H. Cannaday (1881-1968).

I'm not sure about the Quakers. Seems that I read somewhere that some of the Cannadays were Quakers, but I'm not sure. I know that most of my branches were Primitive Baptist.

As for the way the name is spelled, I have seen it many, many different ways. Most of the ones that remained in this area spell it 'Cannaday'. Descendants of some of the ones who left Patrick and Floyd County Virginia in the 1800's and settled in West Virginia now spell it Canada. Several versions have only one 'n' and some have a 'dy' on the end rather than a 'day'. To each his own, I guess.

Hi I sure would like to know about the Cannaday/Canaday family from Martinsville.
My husbands father is George Navy, son of John William, son of Benjamine, son of Pleasant, son of William Patrick.
Are you related to this clan?
I do have a question about Stephen Cannaday. I can find listings for two Stephen Cannaday from the Civil war, one a farmer and one a Sheriff, listed in the civil war. My cousin is convinced that they are the same person. I can find parent of Stephen as Riley and Mary Jane Foley. Im just not sure if there are two or if this is the same guy. If there are two Stephen's who are the parents of the other?
Thanx
Linda Canaday
Re: Hugh Patrick Cannaday

Hi, uscollins1. I'm sorry I'm so late in responding, but this request only came to my attention a few days ago.

Riley Hugh Cannaday was my grandfather, and Hugh Patrick Cannaday was my uncle. Uncle Hugh "ran away from home" as a teenager, served in the infantry in WWI, and didn't communicate with his family ever. His wife did occasionally correspond with my mother (his half-sister), and when my family moved to California in 1956, we established a relationship with Hugh and his wife, who then lived in Pasadena.

My mother came to California for a brief visit in about 1962 and I took her to see Uncle Hugh, who was in the VA Hospital in Brentwood. It was a very emotional reunion, inasmuch as they hadn’t seen each other since he was a teenager and she was in elementary school, and he was then clearly in the process of dying.

Baker Cannaday was also my uncle, Mother’s youngest sibling, and Uncle Hugh was her eldest sibling. Baker also removed himself from communication with his family and didn’t reunite with his only son, Charlie, until Charlie was an adult. Most of his life was spent in California, yet he returned to Arkansas (Mena, where he’d never lived before) with his second wife, Opal, and died in East Texas.

Let me know if you’re still interested. I may have more information for you, and you can contact me directly.

Don Payne
DonPayne@aol,.com

My ancestry starts with my Grandmother, her name was Willia Underwood b. 1890..her father was Robert Creed Underwood b.1863..his father was Joshua Underwood b. 1824.. his father was William Underwood b.1785..William's father was Samuel Underwood b.1755 and William's mother was Misniah Cannaday b. 1749..Samuel and Misniah had many brothers and sisters therefore there is a lot of decendant cousins..
Misniah's parents were William Cannaday and Nancy Hill b.Abt 1733 for each of them which made them quiet young to be married.
William Cannaday's parents were John Cannaday b.1707 and Margaret Summer b. ??
Grandma Willia had record of much of this info and I wrote it down so I would have a copy..she is gone now and so is the info with her..I am grateful that I had my info although I done nothing with it for years..I only have 1 glitch in my info as somewhere in the info she gave me she kept referring to the name Nancy Greer that was suppose to fit in somewhere around her grandfathers time era of 1824..I wander if Joshua was married before Mary Polly..just a guess..if there is any info let me know ..Thank You..Karen

Hi Karen
I'm sorry I did not get back to you. I can not find my Underwood/Cannaday book and then I forgot. I'm 66 and my memory is not what it used to be. I will find my book eventually and get back to you. My mother has told me too about Indian blood in the Cannanay family. I believe it was my mother's gggrandmother. I will send you message on to the author of the book.

Karen

Sorry no pics..Samuel and Misniah were also my gggggrandparents..my grandmother was Willia Lee Underwood/ Miller..her father Robert Creed Underwood..her grandfather was Joshua Underwood..her ggrandfather was Wm Underwood..her ggrandfather and gggrandmother were Samuel Underwood and Misniah Cannaday..I am 71 yrs old and I sat Grandma Miller down and she gave me most of my info and I wrote it down as she was telling me about he life..she claimed that Joshua's wife Mary Polly was Indian..her last name might be Hill..she also remember her fathers's sister that lived with them..she never married and had jet black hair that touched the ground..talked very little.. she called her Aunt Jenny..Grandma's father and mother are buried in a family cemetery back up a holler from Linside..some of the other family is there as well..I have been there about 50 years ago..if you have any stories for me would love to hear from you..Karen Sherman dissherman@yahoo.com
I can send you what I have and I'll check to see if I have anything in my book "Underwoods and Cannadays". I'll also send your message to the lady who wrote the book. I love to share information. If this gets to you, would you please email me at doxielover3@gmail.com.
I'm from a long line of Cannadays, live in Utah, and just got back from a trip to Virginia and foundn lots of information. I've been researching for years and have a lot so let's compare. I have no photos and would love to get any of the Cannaday photos. Thanks! Ann Cannaday Sanders

William T CANNADAY (b. Apr 1863) married Martha Arabella RAY (b. abt 1862) on 28 Dec 1884 in Franklin County, TX. They apparently lived the remainder of there lives in Franklin County. William died in Jan 1934 and is buried in the Mt Vernon City Cemetery, Franklin County. I am trying to locate death and cemetery information on Martha A (Ray) CANNADAY.

I would also like to connect with any descendants/researchers of this family that might be able to furnish any information on Martha’s first marriage to Andrew J BOYD in Hopkins County, TX (1878). Andrew died 1880-1884, but there was at least one child – Ollie V - born to this marriage.

Please email me at: ronschell@tulsaconnect.com

Regards,
Ron Schell

Hello,
I am a great-grandson of Sarah Cannaday and U.S. Coleman. I'm afraid that my knowledge doesn't extend any further back than Eigah, but I may be of some service. How are you related? I would enjoy any information you could share as would my grandfather.
Thanks

Robin,

I'm not sure which John Butler married Nancy Cannady, other than its the one that moved to NC around 1810, and then to Sevier County TN shortly thereafter. Three of his sons then settled in Alabama.

Here is an excerpt from my Grandmother's book, "The Samuel Butler Chronicle, A Geneology of North Alabama Butlers"...

"Original record of Halifax County, Virginia, verify that our Butler ancestors lived for quite a time in that area:

'I, Mary (Ford) Southworth, descended from Josiah Mapeles and his wife Mary Butler. In the book it shows Mary Butler as the daughter of Henry Butler; this is not correct. She was the daughter of John Butler and wife Nancy Cannaday, and they were married (from marriages of Halifax County, VA 1753-1800) by Catherine L. Knorr page 14 "15 Sept. 1787 John Butler and Nancy Cannaday daugher of William Cannaday who consents. Surety Neil Cannaday. Wit: John Singleton.'

'So this record tells us that John Butler married Nancy Cannaday daughter of Wm. and explains the given name of Cannada [sic] Butler of Alabama. Mary Butler wife of Josiah Maples had brother Samuel Butler and from records of Fairfax Co., Va., John Butler and Henry Butler are on the 1810 census, this is another county in which this family lived. They marriied multiple with Maples, Long, Bodine, Atchley, etc. all moving together.'

This is priceless evidence that the father and mother of Samuel Butler first lived in Virginia. It had always been a mystery as to where the family name "Canada" began in the Butler family. Now it is clear that it was Samuel's mother's maiden name, with the spelling slightly changed."

Samuel Butler had 13 children. The first son was named Canada Butler.

Also, there is a good summary of the Cannaday family (also spelled Cannady) at http://www.billputman.com/HUGH%20CANNADY%20of%20Stafford%20C.... It lists all the descendents of Hugh Cannady, including William, father of Nancy Cannady. Interestingly, there is no reference to a Neil or Heil Cannady. Perhaps Neil is a middle name or nickname used by one of Nancy Cannady's brothers or cousins.

I have very little information on John Butler's ancestry or siblngs, other than the indications that he had a brother named Henry who also lived in Virginia in 1810.

Dear Jeff,

I would appreciate any assistance you can give to help untangle which John BUTLER married Nancy CANNADY. Here are the details I currently have.

HALIFAX COUNTY, VA - VITALS - Marriages sorted by Grooms
1753-1800
----¤¤¤----

Book Title: A History Of Halifax County (Virginia) By Wirt Johnson Carrington

Date Groom Groom Given Bride Given Bride Comments
Surname Name Names Surname
September 15 1787 Butler John Nancy Cannaday

Following information in quotes came from Jerry Penley.
"Notes for William Cannady
________________________________________
For research as possible parents:
Name: William Cannady
Spouse: Margaret Linee
Marriage Date (Day, Month, Year): 16 January 1745
City: Stafford Co
State: VA

CANADY - Who was the William CANADY named as father of these four brides, all married in Halifax Co VA? Nancy CANNADAY married John BUTLER 15 Sept 1787 (their bondsman was Heil CANNADAY - who was he?), Milly CANNADY married John LEWIS 29 April 1789, Isabell CANNADAY married Robert STEVENS 30 Oct 1794, and Patsey CANADAY married Joseph WATTS 29 May 1799.

The marriages of the 4 daughters was found in Catherine Lindsay Knorr, Marriage Bonds & Minister’s Returns, Halifax County, 1753-1800, Pine Bluff, AR, copyright 1957. pp 14, 56, 88, 100. Neil Cannaday was surety and John Singleton witness for John Butler and Nancy Cannaday's marriage; William Cannaday acted as surety for the marriage of John Lewis and Milly Cannady. John Butler was surety and Joseph Ashely for the marriage of Robert Stevens and Isabel Cannady. In turn, Robert Stevens was surety for marriage of Joseph Watts and Patsey Cannaday. Thomas Dobson and Thomas Stevens were witnesses, and Patsy also signed the certificate.

William Kennedy made his will 6 Oct 1804; it was proved 22 Apr 1805, but William had died before 23 Nov 1804 when his widow Isbell Kennedy deeded 70 acres of land on the upper fork of Difficult Creek to Nathaniel Barksdale.

William apparently named his 3 sons and presumably 2 unmarried daughters in the will. He did not name any of the 4 who were married, as cited above. Named in the will, with bequests:

wife Isbell (after debts paid, all balance of personal estate and all tracts of land)
Son John, and
Son William Hill (to share land, at death of Isbell)
Son Martin (a horse and saddle, feather bed and cow)
Daughter Polly (1 feather bed and 1 cow)
Daughter Rebecca (1 feather bed and 1 cow)

wife Isbell Cannady executrix
witnesses: Alex. Beman, Elisha Palmer, Isaiah Canada"

The following is a portion of the lineage posted by my brother on the Butler Family Tree DNA website.
"William “the Regulator” BUTLER (Edmund “E”) and Phoebe/Feby CHILDRESS/CHILDERS, daughter of Henry CHILDRESS/CHILDERS and Mary FARMER, b: 1747 in Hanover County, Virginia; d. 26 January 1831 at the home of her son James BUTLER and his wife Charity LOWE in Simpson County, Kentucky; buried 16 January 1831 at the LOWE’s burying ground in Franklin, Simpson County, Kentucky
William was a well educated man who was fluent in Latin. With his level of education and support from his brother John, the Sheriff of Orange County, North Carolina, William managed to get himself appointed as the tax collector for the area in North Carolina where he lived. He helped further the cause of the Regulators by simply not collecting taxes. William and Phoebe had nine children. Phoebe lived a long time following her husband’s death. All except one of her children, William, moved to Tennessee or Kentucky. She moved with several of her children from North Carolina to Kentucky. For a number of years she lived with her daughter Frances “Fanny” and Fanny’s husband Joseph William PLUMMER. [My uncle William provided a number of original letters and documents to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill dealing with correspondence to and from William “the Regulator”, his mother, and his siblings, plus letters to and from Phoebe and her children in correspondence with her son William who remained in North Carolina. Additional information about William “the Regulator” BUTLER and his involvement in the Regulator Movement can be found in the book "Breaking Loose Together" by Marjoleine Kars published in 2002 by The University of North Carolina Press.]
Their children:
1) Elizabeth BUTLER b. 1766 in Cumberland County, Virginia; d. before September 1825 in Moury County, Tennessee On 5 April 1785 in Rowan County, North Carolina, she married James McCONNELL/McKONNELL. About 1818, they moved to Tennessee.

2) John BUTLER b. 1768 in Orange County, North Carolina He married Nancy. [There is a great deal of confusion between this John and a Jonathan L. BUTLER IV. Jonathan L. BUTLER IV is shown by some researchers as John Landon BUTLER, son of John BUTLER III. Both John BUTLER and Jonathan or John Landon BUTLER IV appear to be born around the same time. Jonathan/John is born in Richmond County, Virginia. Many researchers have attached the same wives, marriages, and children to each of these men. John BUTLER is sometimes shown with wife Nancy KNOX, occasionally listed as Nancy/Jessie KNOX. Frequently this first wife for John BUTLER is listed simply as Jessie. Jessie KNOX is also shown as the first wife of the John or Jonathan that is the son of John/Jonathan Butler III. Those that show Jessie KNOX as the first wife of either of these men frequently show Mary Ann JONES, daughter of Seaborn JONES, as their second wife. Some Jonathan L. BUTLER IV researchers only show the Mary Ann JONES marriage. Yet, they attribute all the children found under the two wives by the other researchers, to this single marriage. Originally our research only showed a Nancy with unknown last name. Recently we have uncovered a marriage between John BUTLER and Nancy CANNADAY which took place 15 September 1787 in Halifax County, Virginia. Heil CANNADAY was the bondsman for this event. It is possible this is the marriage for the above John BUTLER and simply facts were confused between these two men. Or the above John may have married in North Carolina in a yet undiscovered union there. Both families need more research to sort out the discrepancies.]"

[Continues on with other children]

Have any male descendants of the Samuel Butler your grandmother researched, participated in a Butler Family DNA project? Much clarification can be made through DNA when paper trails end. Take a look at the following two websites. The first is the Butler Family Tree DNA project's Official Website. It is located at http://www.the-butlers.com/butlerdna/ click on "View yDNA Results" then "Private Project Code" for the lineages you wish to see. The second is the website for one of the top vendors in this industry. http://www.familytreedna.com/

I sincerely believe Family Tree DNA is the most professional and reliable Genealogy DNA group available at this time. Since its inception, in April of 2000, Family Tree DNA has been associated with the Arizona Research Labs, led by Dr. Michael Hammer, one of the world's leading authorities in the field of Genetics. Having other renowned scientists on its advisory board, Family Tree DNA is the world leader and only organization in the field of Genetic Genealogy that has been constantly developing the science that enables many genealogists around the world to advance their families research. The Arizona Research Labs also head up the IBM sponsored National Geographic "Genographic Project."

If we can confirm John's marriage and lineage, I have some more generations going back. Here is hoping we can help one another and others make connections for their Butler family lines.

Hi, I just ran across this message. John Butler/Nancy Cannaday who moved to Sevier County TN in early 1800s. My grandmother wrote a geneology of their son Samuel Butler who married in TN, then settled in North Alabama. I would be interested in the information you have on John Butler's ancestry.
