You can add your mtDna to FTDNA and make sure you pick the family finder. Also I would look up FTDNA and ask them the best way to do that. I looked up the number for you and it is 713-868-1438. Do you have any male Cannaday/Cannadys? BTW are you from the John - Wagstaff - Hugh Cannaday group from NC?

Good luck with this.

Most of my information earlier than 1900 has come from searching sites like Ancestry census and similar genealogy forums. I don't have anyone to query. THe line I'm following, I believe derives from William Berrian Cannady (1863-1920). I have him as a son of Solomon P.W. Cannady of Emanuel, GA. (1835-bef 1883). My son is a Cannady.

I'm not convinced from online data anyway, that the John who married Whitty is in the same direct line. I think there is a second John who is their son, who returned to SC.

Hello, My name is Kim. I saw that you posted a Solomon that married an Elizabeth Edenfield. If I am not mistaken that is our Solomon P.W. Cannady that married Elizabeth. Do you know what year your Solomon was born? Also do you have any male descendants with the Cannady last name or descend from this Solomon? We have conducted some DNA tests on our 4 men who descended from John Cannady/Kennedy. We would love to share information if you are related. I will also share any info I might know from my research of other Kennedy/Cannadys. Thank you,
Kim
BTW: Sarah Witt was born @1720 and married a John Cannady, who was born around the same time. Sarah and John would have been about 100 years old when Solomons's eldest brother William E. was born. There is a John and Whitty Cannady of Barnwell SC, however that is Alva Whittaker Palmer a.k.a. Whitty. Please let me know if you need more help or have anything to share. Thank you.

Calling all Cannadys, Canadys, Cannadays, Kennedys, et al to join the already established DNA project. Our group of Cannadys/Kennedys et. al. hail from NC, SC and early Georgia Parrishes and Counties. Please log onto the FTDNA site and enter the name Kennedy and leave an email for the administrator Jim Kennedy. Please have your earliest Cannady/Kennedy known handy so that Jim can put you into a known group. It was cheaper to join the Kennedy Group, already established, and put our John Cannady sons from Emanuel County GA as a sub-group. I understand there is an ability to share the DNA results between DNA testers and research sites. Not sure. Please let everyone you do research with to ask the male Cannadys to be tested. Thank you very much. S. K. Cannady

Hi - I was just reading your post. Have you been able to find any information on African American Cannady's from North Carolina? My grandfather was from N. Carolina and married a woman from Baltimore Maryland. They moved to Boston but she eventually came back to Baltimore after a divorce. Knowing this information- I think we may be able to help each other. I can only go as far back as my grandfather born abt 1913 - waiting for 1940 census to try to get more info.

The difference in spelling is why it took me so long to find my husband's Canady/Cannady family. Our name is spelled Cannady (2-n's), but apparently his g-grandfather was the first in their family to spell it that way - his parents and all siblings spelled with one n. I am told it is a variant of the Irish Kennedy. Most people were totally uneducated. They knew how to say their name, but didn't even know the alphabet, little less how to spell their name. I was told they found the most educated person around (legible handwriting) to be the census taker or the person that signed men up for the military. However those folks that were working for the government spelled your name, that became your legal name. I don't have a Milton in my database, but will see what I can find.

sure. on the cannady side, all i know is that my grandfather is Milton cannady. he married corean(spelling?) McKnight from Humboldt, tn(of the McKnight that farm between Humboldt and fruitland) though she was adopted, so i really know nothing more than that. Milton recently passed away. corean is still living. they reside in Lubbock TX, how/why they got there im not sure of. Milton has a daughter, Karen and at least 3 sons. Kenny(kenney), Steven, and SAM(Sammy). Steven lives in Oklahoma city, OK, Kenny? unknown, last i heard SAM, Sammy was living in new Mexico, just across the border from TX i think. also an adopted son(which was in reality a grandson) named Chris. i believe there are some relatives by the last name of hill around Trenton/dyersburg (Gibson county, tn). other than that i am clueless. and as not to expose my identity on the web that is all i will say. i dont want anyone that has nothing to do with this to be snooping around trying to get personal info. but if someone hits on something i will be glad to talk to anyone over the phone or email. i was contacted by someone in Georgia several years ago (like 1995) trying to trace their roots as well. you look up the name and all it says is deformed or helmet head. what a strange meaning. but i do have a really tough head, lol. i had no info though. hope this info may help someone. i was really surprised to even get a response seeing how old this post was and how long ago it started.

cannady@trentonspeed.com

My Cannady book is out of print now but, I still have my research on my computer. I am showing a Lillie Mae Cannady that was born 1-21-1920 died 7-29-1994 in Orange Co. Fla. She was married to Theodore Gielarowski. Her parents were William Matthew Cannady and Hepsie Spell Cannady. Is this the Lillie Mae you are looking for? If so, I can help you in your search.

Hey Neal and James. The Cannady/Canady surname is the Scottish gaelic spelling of Kenniteg/Cinnidae of Irish origin. The "O" was only added when primogeniture was implemented to pass on clan rule to the 1st or eldest son. This information was learned from a Scottish Anthropologist/Archaeologist I spoke with at Arbroath, Scotland as well as from British surname historical data. He also told me that there were wealthy Kennedy's that received the Culzean Charter of the early 1200's. This was for land of the Southwestern area of Scotland, now referred to as Ayrshire. There are several medieval sites and castles which are referred to as belonging to the Kennedy's. The earliest variation of the Cannady/Kennedy spellings found in Scottish historical writings I have found mention a MacCinnidae warlord of Malcolm in 1049. This was just before the future Malcolm III killed MacBeth for the throne of Scotland. The anthro/archaeol from Arbroath advised me that there were many Cannadys that joined up with the Ulrich and Cameron clans within Scotland.

James,
I will have to find where I actually got the information from, but I have it at Home. The origin is Scottish and the original spelling is O'Cineade. The information I have says that there were 70 something variations.name changes through the years.

My name is Leonard E. Cannady Jr., My father is half Cherokee Indian and I know for a fact from visiting my grandmother at the age of nine, she was full blooded Cherokee Indian. I'm thirty eight, my father is sixty eight, and my grand mother is deceaded. I remember her telling me a lot of history of the Cherokee Indians and the resentment that she had. I'll never forget her telling me the story about when the white man used to set a price for anybody that brought them an indian head for five dollars

I believe that John had a previous marriage and had a son. In the 1820 census John has a wife, a 16-26 y/o male and a newborn. I believe Wm. E. is the newborn. As John and Sarah did not have a son named John, I believe the 16-26 y/o in the 1820 census is John Jr. By the 1830 census, John Jr (?) is gone however we have found a John Cannady that obtains land in the Cherokee Land Lottery as did a Caleb Kennedy. Caleb and Mary Polly Evans, his wife moved to now Tallapoosa County Alabama. Caleb died in Tall. Co. and Mary Polly died in Coosa Co. One of John Sr.'s other sons, my Daniel Berrian Cannady had a son named John Lewis Caleb Cannady. Passing down names were so important to the men (and women) of those days.

I and several relatives have been researching this line of the Canadys/Cannadys from Montgomery/Emanuel County Ga. for several years and we cannot positively identify the parents of William E, James H. and Daniel B. Cannady (all believed to be brothers) in the Emanuel County. We have considerable documents on the marriages of each (to Durden sisters and daughters of Henry Durden), but unable to positively identify their parents. We believe it to be John Cannady and possibly married to a Sarah...but the data are inconclusive.

We welcome any information or further clues for research on this line of Canady/Cannady. I will exchange information of each of these three that I have.
Bob Canady

I am researching a line from Montgomery, GA to Emanuel, GA and am stuck at SC. . My tentative tree (using census but no original materials) is
( James M. Cannady m. A. Dickey) , (William B. Cannady m. Mary Gooding), (Solomon Canady m. E. Edenfield) and possibly (John Canaday m. Sarah (?)).

Looking at John "Canaday", I have seen claims that he is from South Carolina (Barnwell) and that his wife is a "Sarah Witt" from either VA or NC. John is supposedly born in 1785, but his oldest child, William E. (if true) is born when John is 35. Does anyone know of previous marriages for this John of SC?

Have any other links been found for this branch of the family within South Carolina from earlier periods?

Hi. My mother, Patricia Cannady, did a search on her family after finding documents on her mother's family upon her death. Were were able to tie the Cannady's back to the Kennedy's. I know that Albert Kennedy was our g,g,g,great grandfather, who settled in GA from Ireland, while other family members from Ireland went to Mass. Patricia has more info that may help us all tie this together.

Will need your family memebers full name, birth, death dates, place born and died before being able to trace your family.

Could it be that your Herbert had another first name? Such as James Herbert? Could Herbert be his middle name and the name he went by? Could Frances be his first or second wife? These questions will need to be researched.
It could be, I have info on your great grandparents or great great grandparents but just not your grandparents.

What I need from you is the earliest person in your Cannady line that you have a birth and death date on, their complete given name and where they were born. Then we will see if we can make the connection.

Also, in doing research look for the different spellings of Cannady.
