Hello, Alvin. My husband is the grandson of Melver Lee Cannady, 2nd son of W R Cannady & Ida Mae Hassell. We have been to Hickman Co on several occasions and visited the Canady farm, the Canady Cemetery where James Thomas Canady & 2nd wife Bersina Emeline Hutchinson Regan are buried. First wife Mary Margarette Lewis, dau of William Lewis & Jemima Ratliff, is buried in the Plunkett Cemetery in Hickman County. Ida Mae Hassell was the dau of Francis Marion Hassell and Louisiana "Lue" V Russell. Francis Marion is buried on the Black John Hassell (his father) farm. After his death, Lue remarried to Cornelius Neal Warren and she is buried at the Kellough Cemetery in Hickman Co. Contact me at pcannady6@gmail.com

I AM ALVIN CANNADY, SON OF HASSELL CANNADY AND GRANDSON OF WILLIAM R. AND IDA MAE CANNADY. WILLA MAE IS MY DECEASED AUNT WHO MARRIED "DUTCH" WITHERSPOON AND LIVED IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA UNTIL THEIR DEATH. MY FATHER, HASSELL, WAS NAMED FOR GRANDMOTHER IDA MAE HASSELL CANNADY. ALL THIRTEEN CHILDREN IN THAT FAMILY ARE NOW DECEASED. I KNEW UNCLE HARDIN, MERVIN, ELTON HALL AND PORTER AS WELL AS AUNT DANA AND AUNT WILLA MAE VERY WELL. I LIVED WITH UNCLE DUTCH AND AUNT WILLA MAE FOR A COUPLE MONTHS IN CALIFORNIA MANY YEARS AGO. THEIR CHILDREN BILLY RAY AND BARBARA ARE DECEASED. THERE WAS ONE YOUNGER WITHERSPOON SON BUT I DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HIM. ANY INFORMATION THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE ABOUT THE HASSELL AND CANADY/CANNADY FAMILIES IN HICKMAN COUNTY, TENNESSEE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. I BELIEVE THAT MY GREAT GRANDFATHER IS JAMES THOMAS CANADY AND GREAT GRANDMOTHER IS MARGARETTE LEWIS CANADY AND I BELIEVE THEY ARE BURIED IN HICKMAN COUNTY, TN. ANYTHING YOU CAN SHARE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

HE IS DECEASED.

I HAVE JUST STARTED SEARCHING WITH ANCESTRY.COM AND OTHER SOURCES. SEEMS FROM A POST BY JESSICA FERRUFINO ALIZADEH ON GENEALOGY.COM THAT WILLIAM ROBERT CHANGED THE SPELLING FROM CANADY TO CANNADY UPON HIS MARRIAGE TO IDA MAE HASSELL IN 1906. SHE STATES THAT HER GREAT UNCLE, DONALD CANNADY, TOLD HER THAT JAMES THOMAS CANADY AND HIS BROTHERS OWNED MULE TEAMS AND PULLED BARGES DOWN THE ERIE CANAL. SHE IS SEARCHING FOR KENTUCKY CONNECTIONS FOR CANNADY OR CANADY FAMILIES.

WOULD APPRECIATE ANY INFORMATION THAT YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO PROVIDE ABOUT JAMES THOMAS CANNADY AND HIS WIFE, MARGARETTE.
FYI. For anyone who has been trying to contact Dr. Robert M. Canady he passed in May 2011. He was a wonderful man, a brilliant scholar, a retired Major USAF, a fun Southern Gentleman and a family patriarch. He is missed by all who had met and loved him. If you have any questions about the Canady/Cannady family descendant from John and Sarah Cannady of Emanuel County, GA @ 1812. I would be more than happy to share info if it would help your research.

I'm sorry but none of the info you have supplied comes close to what I have. There were and still are so many John Cannadys and a host of Sarah's and Elizabeth's until I wouldn't know where to even look. In my book, I detail my line through Patrick Cannady b. abt. 1740. Your line may very well have come from a sibling of this Patrick or another child of this Patrick . At this point, I don't believe I can help you.

Hi Sue,
I know you talked to my Mom a while ago. She talked with you about your book. Her name was Irene Cannady. We lost her last September 17, 2011. She is dearly missed.
Our line remains stuck on a John Cannady (b. @1777) and Sarah (UNK)(b. @ 1800). They lived on John's (1814) 400 acre land (Emanuel County) and they had the following children: an unknown 16-20 y/o in the 1820 census (makes me believe John had an earlier marriage and a son named John), William E. Canady (1820), Elizabeth Cannady (1822), James H. Cannady (Kennedy as family later changed the name as it was originally), Lucinda Cannady (1827), Wealthy Ann Cannady (1829), my Daniel B. Cannady (1831), Narcissa A. (1833), Solomon P. W. Cannady (1835), Mary Cannady (1837). The 3 older boys married 3 daughters of Henry Hilliard Durden, Mary Polly, Temperence and my Rebecca respectively. All the other children married Edenfields. John Cannadys land was adjacent to a very, very large farm owned by many Edenfields.

My line is John Cannady/Kennaday/Cannaday and Sarah, Son Daniel B and Rebecca Durden Cannady, son William Perry and Mariah Olliff Cannady, (Wm.) E.H. and Sarah Matilda Cowart Cannady, son William Claude and Carrie Frances Smith Cannady.

I have a hypothesis I am trying out. That is why my tree is private. I have found a John who was born in 1777 in SC. His parents fit the names of his children given the unknown male is a son named John. The children of at least one sibling of John matches the names of John's children. There is one marriage of a John to an Elizabeth which is very close to my hypothesis. Have you seen this line at all.

Hello Phyllis and Sue,

I have one of the Wagstaff and Margaret Hutcheson books. I actually knew the descendant John Phipps Cannady of Lakewood, CA. He was a very , very charming man. When we met for lunch he hugged me like he was my grandfather. Sadly we lost John about 1-2 years ago. His second wife is still alive in Lakewood. I do not mind helping anyone do a look or two to help them out. The book is called "Cannady and Allied families including Adams, Bailey, Bradford, Bradsher, Butler, Mangum, Pomphret, Turner and others." The authors were Elizabeth Adams Tissot and Agnes Cannady Cashwell. Both were Aunts of John P. Cannady. Let me know if I can assist in anyway. Kim

We love your book Sue. Thanks for all of your hard work. By the way, have any of your male Cannadys participated in the Family Tree DNA testing. OUr Cannadys did. We tested 4 of our Cannadys. The results have been so encouraging. If anyone in your group wants to try the FTDNA or Ancestry DNA, please talk with Jim Kennedy of the Kennedy Surname Board with FTDNA.
You can add your mtDna to FTDNA and make sure you pick the family finder. Also I would look up FTDNA and ask them the best way to do that. I looked up the number for you and it is 713-868-1438. Do you have any male Cannaday/Cannadys? BTW are you from the John - Wagstaff - Hugh Cannaday group from NC?

Good luck with this.

Most of my information earlier than 1900 has come from searching sites like Ancestry census and similar genealogy forums. I don't have anyone to query. THe line I'm following, I believe derives from William Berrian Cannady (1863-1920). I have him as a son of Solomon P.W. Cannady of Emanuel, GA. (1835-bef 1883). My son is a Cannady.

I'm not convinced from online data anyway, that the John who married Whitty is in the same direct line. I think there is a second John who is their son, who returned to SC.

Hello, My name is Kim. I saw that you posted a Solomon that married an Elizabeth Edenfield. If I am not mistaken that is our Solomon P.W. Cannady that married Elizabeth. Do you know what year your Solomon was born? Also do you have any male descendants with the Cannady last name or descend from this Solomon? We have conducted some DNA tests on our 4 men who descended from John Cannady/Kennedy. We would love to share information if you are related. I will also share any info I might know from my research of other Kennedy/Cannadys. Thank you,
Kim
BTW: Sarah Witt was born @1720 and married a John Cannady, who was born around the same time. Sarah and John would have been about 100 years old when Solomons's eldest brother William E. was born. There is a John and Whitty Cannady of Barnwell SC, however that is Alva Whittaker Palmer a.k.a. Whitty. Please let me know if you need more help or have anything to share. Thank you.

Calling all Cannadys, Canadys, Cannadays, Kennedys, et al to join the already established DNA project. Our group of Cannadys/Kennedys et. al. hail from NC, SC and early Georgia Parrishes and Counties. Please log onto the FTDNA site and enter the name Kennedy and leave an email for the administrator Jim Kennedy. Please have your earliest Cannady/Kennedy known handy so that Jim can put you into a known group. It was cheaper to join the Kennedy Group, already established, and put our John Cannady sons from Emanuel County GA as a sub-group. I understand there is an ability to share the DNA results between DNA testers and research sites. Not sure. Please let everyone you do research with to ask the male Cannadys to be tested. Thank you very much. S. K. Cannady

Hi - I was just reading your post. Have you been able to find any information on African American Cannady's from North Carolina? My grandfather was from N. Carolina and married a woman from Baltimore Maryland. They moved to Boston but she eventually came back to Baltimore after a divorce. Knowing this information- I think we may be able to help each other. I can only go as far back as my grandfather born abt 1913 - waiting for 1940 census to try to get more info.

The difference in spelling is why it took me so long to find my husband's Canady/Cannady family. Our name is spelled Cannady (2-n's), but apparently his g-grandfather was the first in their family to spell it that way - his parents and all siblings spelled with one n. I am told it is a variant of the Irish Kennedy. Most people were totally uneducated. They knew how to say their name, but didn't even know the alphabet, little less how to spell their name. I was told they found the most educated person around (legible handwriting) to be the census taker or the person that signed men up for the military. However those folks that were working for the government spelled your name, that became your legal name. I don't have a Milton in my database, but will see what I can find.
