James Cannan - Martha Dufty

James was born in England on 22/10/1835 - it has been difficult to find much about him. He married Martha Dufty (b. 4/7/1843 in England) on 24/9/1858 at Castlerange, SA and James died on 29/9/1903 at Yankalilla SA. They had 10 children, one was my grandfather, John Cannnan. Martha married John Way and Martha is buried in Merbein, Vic cemetery, she died on 17/5/1924. I am particularly interested in tracing James Cannan's origins.

I just found your message & hoping you are still involved in Family History. Jeremiah & Anne Cannan are names I am researching as well. Have you found out anything more about them & is Joseph Cannan connected to this couple in some way? All I have is Jeremiah was born in 1804 London England married 1828 died 19 April 1879, Burwood NSW. Anne George Cannan nee White was born 1804 Faversham, Kent England & died 1 April 1884 Burwood NSW. Jeremiah & Anne were my husband's grt grt grandparents. They had a son Henry Dexter who married Ann Foster & their son Herbert Australia was my husband's grandfather. My information is from family records & NSW BDM Index. I will apply for copies of the Death Cert of Jeremiah & Anne to ensure these facts are correct. I hope you can tell me more about this couple.
Re: Kearsey Cannan, of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

You mention the name Cannan and Mona b 1872 and I also noticed Siddins. I am looking for info about Mona Cannan who it appears was the sister of Maj.Gen J. H. Cannan of Brisbane ... (and I would have to check the website but the J. H. would be the James Harold as in the list of your relatives?) but I can find virtually nothing of their family in Brisbane until I found thgis possible lead. Mana married "Jock" Robertson a Berisbane lawyer about whom I am writing a paper for a local history society in Brisbane. From the info on the web site, almost certainly connected ... but then is there another sibling or earlier generation involved in the solicitors Cannan and Peterson, now part of Deacons? Was John Kearsey a lawyer .. in Australia ... in Qld or in Brisbane ... if so when?

Hi Daniel,

Before I start on the name Nicholas. I do have quite a bit on Kearsy Cannan but I hope you have info from your side that can sort the following out.

John Chapman Griffin Nicholas (I will refer to him as JCGN or JCGB (Bird) from here on.)

Was born 6th June 1854 in Mahebourg. Mauritius to Major Griffin Nicholas and Matilda Ann Bird. They had been married 17th August 1841 Cape of Good Hope. Griffin Nicholas eventually became a Major in the Queens own at Buckingham palace. His Father was Robert Nicholas Barrister at Law who lived at 24 Wimpole St Lower Court.
JCGN Married Catherine Cannan 2 Jan 1878 Brisbane. She was daughter of Kearsey Cannan and Mary Elizabth Sidden who had been married 1842 St Phillips Church Sydney.

John Chapman Griffin Bird Arrived in Glen Innes in 1883 with Elizabeth St John Coleman From Ireland ( Story has it he met here at St James Castle when visiting his father and brought her back to Australia changing his name to his mothers maiden name BIRD). She gave Birth to my grandfather on board the boat coming to Australia they then settled in Mead St Glen Innes as (Bird) eventually shifting to Tamworth around 1900.

They were then at "Waratah" Woodstock St Waverley. Elizabeth died there in 1912. John Chapman Griffin Nicholas died at Lidcombe Hospital/Home 19 Dec 1937 and was buried as John Chapman Griffin Nicholas His Death Certificate read.
3 Children Emily 52/Bessie/50 1 female Deceased. He was suffering senile psychosis. Apparently there are records we can now access. What I have also found out is that he was a person of interest to the Government in Canberra I think he was involved in something at the time of federation.

Let this be the start of sorting out the dirt.

regards,

bob

I realise this is a very old inquiry, but if you're still around & still looking, I also have William Cannan & Jane Stevens as his parents. William died sometime around 1848, and the were married July 29th of 1829, but I have no more information on him. Jane was born January 7th of 1807 and died on October 28th of 1872. I have Jesse Stevens and Margret (?) as her parents, but no more than that.

Re: Mary Cannah & Robert Murray

Dear John,

I might have a relative that is related to Mary Cannan but it surely is a long shot. I had two relatives, Bridget (Keenan) Quinlivan, my GGGmother,(1820 to 1908) and her brother, Patrick Keenan(1815 to 1897) that resided in Forest Lake and Silver Lake, Susquehanna County, PA between 1852 to about 1908. Though their surname was spelled as Keenan in Susquehanna county, it was not spelled that way in baptismal records of their children in St. Joseph's Church in Forest Lake,PA. Their records have the name spelled as either Canan or Cannan! They both came from County Clare, Ireland...we believe from the Ennis area.
Patrick Keenan had a daughter, Bridget ,b. 1848, who married a Patrick Murray,b. 1841. I believe that Patrick Murray's family was from Silver Lake too but I believe that this Murray family didn't come from County Clare, Ireland. Another item that comes up in both Bridget (Keenan) Quinlivan and Patrick Keenan's families is that their daughters order of birth points to suggest that Bridget and Patricks mother's name could have been Mary A! Bridget (Keenan) Quinlvan's first daughter was named Mary A. Quinlivan and Patrick Keenan's second daughter was named Mary A. Keenan. This first naming convention fits how the Irish named their daughters and sons after their parents etc.... So maybe your Mary Cannan was the first daughter in her family, Patrick was their son, and Bridget was the second daughter. I have more information if needed.

Jim Quinlivan

I have a John Cannan born in Ireland...
Don't know much about it except that one of his sons, David married and had daughter who was my great grandmother on my father's side. She was my father's maternal grandmother - Margaret Elizabeth - she had a brother named Patrick who lived in Chicago, IL in 1939.

I have been trying to figure this family out for some time now.
Ginger Redman-McConnell

Kearsey Cannan, of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
I am searching for relatives who are descended from Kearsey Cannan, a doctor who practised in colonial Queensland. He married my ancestral aunt, Mary Elizabeth Siddins, on July 9, 1842. They had six children; Mary, born 1843; John Kearsey, born January 17, 1845 (who married Elizabeth Christian Hodgson); Mary Elizabeth, born September 9, 1846; Kearsey, born September 26, 1848; Catherine Lizzy, born February 19, 1851; and Catherine Elizabeth, born May 4, 1853 (the wife of John Chapman Griffin Nicholas). The eldest son, John Kearsey, was a lawyer. He had four children by his wife Elizabeth Christian; Catherine Elizabeth (b 1870); Mona (b 1872); Douglas Herman (b 1880), who died at Gallipoli; and James Harold (b 1882).
David,

I am fascinated to learn about Bessie. I have until now wondered about the other children of John Kearsey Cannan. I have mapped a genealogy that goes back to Richard Siddins, the superintendent of the South Head Lighthouse. I may have mentioned that in the earlier post. On the maternal side, I have gone back to Edward Powell, who was a seaman on the "Lady Juliana" (of the Second Fleet) and who eventually returned here on the "Bellona". You may already know he was among the first group of free settlers along with his future Elizabeth Fish. On the Fish side I have been able to go back several generations as they all came from the same village in Dorset. If you have a genealogy program I could send the pedigree as a gedcom for you to view.

Great to hear from you.

Daniel

Re: Kearsey Cannan, of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Daniel

I am descended from Dr Kearsey Cannan of Brisbane.

John Kearsey Cannan, I am reliably informed, had a fifth child: Bessie Constance Cannan who was born after James Harold Cannan in 1882. Bessie was my grandmother's mother. Bessie married a gentleman named Montague Stanley. They had a daughter and a son. The daughter was Elizabeth (Betty) Constance Stanley. She married Lindsay Martindale Shannon and in 1934 they had John Kearsey Shannon. He married Roxene Mary Lloyd in 1963 and in 1967, they had me, David Martindale Shannon.

As far as I know, neither James Harold (Jimmy) nor Douglas Herman had any children. Jimmy also served at Gallipoli and was decorated for bravery on several occasions during WWI. He was awarded DSO, CMG, CB, Croix de Guerre (Belge) amongst others and rose to the rank of Major General during WWII. He was the Quartermaster General of Australia during WWII, possibly the most significant command held by any Australian officer during that war. He was recommended for a Knighthood by Sir Thomas Blamey after the war but the recommendation was rejected.

My father has a photograph of the whole family with both Jimmy and Douglas Herman in uniform with names of all the family members incribed by my grandmother on the reverse side. I will confirm in due course that there were five children.

David Shannon
Just came across this series of messages. I have recently received some information about the Dermott family in the Philadelphia area from my husband's sister Alice Dermott DeWald, who remembers these folks. Their father was Robert Verner Dermott, b. in Ireland about 1889. He lived in Philadelphia, m. Margaret Marie Cook, d. 1931. He had a brother George and possibly another named Frederick (?) who lived in Gloucester, NJ.

He had (at least) 3 sisters: Margaret, who married William Marquard; Elizabeth "Lizzie", who married John Cannan; and Mary Ann "Minnie", who married John Dermott.

I have further info that I would be happy to share. I would appreciate any info/pictures that any of you have to share. I have found it tough going researching the Dermott family--a little helps a great deal.

Silas Cannan in Kansas

Does anyone have information regarding Silas Walter Cannan, Neosho County, KS? He is my great grand-father. He married Clara E. Murphy in 1885 and had four children I know of, Claude, Oneita, Jessie, and my grandfather, Don Miller. Thank you so much for your help. Jo Cannan Myers
