Did anyone else get a post from a person trying to say that Westchester is now the Bronx and that Jeremiah Canniff was an Irishman Named O'Kenf?!! Both ideas incorrect! Westerchester is the Sleepy Hollow area and there were historically no Irish in that area at that time, only Dutch and French and possibly a few Spainish Jews.

Jeremiah Canniff

I have found a Jeremiah Canniff who lived in Tarrytown, Westchester County, NY. He married Anna Woelfs. He was born around 1660. His descendants lived in Bergen County, NJ. I have no information on where Jeremiah came from. It's possible he was an immigrant, but I don't know where he came from. Does anyone else know?

I'm also trying to trace my Canniffs, who left Ireland (I strongly suspect they were from Cork, but have no proof) around 1867, lived in Swansea, Wales for a number of years, and then emigrated to the US (Canton, Massachusetts) in 1873. My ggg-grandfather was a James Canniff (also listed as John in one source), born in Ireland about 1843 and died in the US in 1900, married Margaret Corkery who I believe was also from Cork. I know this James isn't yours, but I would love to see if we could find a connection. I have tried to connect my Canniffs to the Crowley-Canniff line, as my grandparents always said we were distantly related, but I have again found no link.

I believe the Crowley-Canniffs are from Bandon, County Cork. Keiron55: do you know where in Cork your Canniffs were from? How and when did they get to Wales, and did they subsequently move elsewhere? I have met other Canniffs online who are from Wales, but again, no connections. Cork to Wales was apparently a common migration, especially for steelworkers (as my ancestors were). Then when work dried up, many moved on to the US.

Thanks in advance for any additional info you might have.

Bridget

Canniff family of Arlington, MA 1838

From The Arlington Advocate, 5 May 1938 -

Cannifs Observe 35th Anniversary
———
On Friday evening, April 29, Mr. and Mrs. John Cannif
entertained at dinner at their home, 34 Moulton street, in honor of
their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Cannif of 167 Mystic street,
whose 35th wedding anniversary it was. The dining room was
beautifully decorated for the party, and a delicious dinner was
served. Forming the centerpiece on the dining table was a huge
wedding cake, and the “bride” repeated the cake cutting ceremony
of thirty-five years ago.
The high point of the evening was the presentation by five-year-old
Jackie Cannif, a grandchild, of a wedding bouquet to Mr. and Mrs.
Cannif. From the bouquet extended a shower of thirty-five white
ribbons, and attached to each ribbon was a crisp new one-dollar
bill. This was the gift of their son John and their daughter Margaret.
The lovely bouquet was designed and fashioned by Joseph Beasley.
Mr. and Mrs. Cannif were the recipients of many other lovely gifts
and many congratulatory telegrams. During the course of the evening
a messenger brought a telegram and a large box of cut flowers,
which when opened probed to be thirty-five American Beauty roses.
This beautiful tribute came from the Rev. Henry Sullivan, of St.
Francis Monastery, New York. Father Sullivan is a cousin of Mrs.
Cannif.

Dennis Ahern [no relation]
Middlesex County Massachusetts Newspaper Abstracts
http://www.rootsweb.com/~mamidnws
I can't find them on any of the 1850/1860 census, but my ggrandfather John was born in New York in 1848. John married Margaret Murphy and they lived in Piermont New York in 1880. Margaret's parents were William Murphy and Mary Connell and they had 3 children. Margaret, Jeremiah, and ?. I still can't find them in any New York census? Wish I knew what to do next. They came to states before Ellis Island
like most of my Irish ancestors all before Ellis Island.
