I'm not sure about Sarah, I may have info, I'll look. Which Wallace family? My grandfather was Julian Durham Wallace, his father was Josephus Durham & his was William Stiring, etc. I'm at Kcannoncoons@gmail.com.Oh, I think I also have info on Wm. Thom. Cannon, sounds familiar. My grandfather on the Cannon side was George Marshall Cannon, very difficult to get accurate info on because there were 2 G.M. Cannon's in the Terrell Co., same age, their fathers were brothers!

Doug,

I am trying to connect Cannon Gibbs born 1805 in NC to his parents or siblings. This family(Hannah Cannon) is about as close as I have gotten so far. I know that Cannon Gibbs was born in NC..eastern area of NC according to family history.
He migrated to SC at a young age..19 yrs old.
No clue as to who he might have traveled with.
I have always believed (no proof)that Cannon was the maiden name of his mother...
We are participating in the Gibbs DNA project by Family Tree and hope that will help even more with the search.
If you have anything to help me please contact me...
Susan Gibbs Martin in SC

I believe your William Cannon was born in Hart County, KY to Thomas Cannon. Thomas' father was John Cannon and his pension application for the Revolutionary War can be found online. It mentions John as his son in the papers. Also, Illinois has a copy of the marriage license of Catherine Loving and William Cannon. My daughter-in-law descends from William and Catherine's daughter Susan. I am doing some research for her so she can join DAR. Happy to share information.

Pam Hicks Smith

Dr James Cannon, Petoskey, MI

The Greewood Cemetery in Petoskey Michigan is planning on using the medical field for their 2010 tour and have planned on including Dr. James Cannon (1829-1905). They are seeking information on the family that they could use to present a snapshot of their lifetime, or information on how Dr. Cannon or the VanGorders chose Petoskey. Photos or artifacts such as a tin of Dr. Cannon's salve or a photo of one would also be of interest and greatly appreciated.

Petoskey is currently a medical hub; Northern Michigan Hospitals and the former Burns Clinic have achieved some national notoriety, especially in the treatment of heart ailments. Dr. Cannon and others laid the groundwork for that in some ways. A newspaper reporter in Grand Rapids encouraged doctors in the late 1800s to set up shop in Petoskey because it was an up and coming town and in need of their services. Many responded.

Karl Crawford, Superintendent at Greenwood, has been most generous with his time and resources, so those who can assist him with this project are encouraged to contact him at karl@gwood.us .

Rufus Cannon 1868-1944

Rufus Cannon Dies After Long Illness

The death last Saturday noon of Rufus Cannon, at his home in Congress, took from this community one of it best known, well-liked and pioneer residents. Mr. Cannon had been ill for a long time. He lost his voice about a year ago and his health had failed steadily.

Born in Iowa Hill, California, on November 27, 1868, Mr. Cannon came to Arizona when a lad of 18, starting in the cattle business on a ranch along the Santa Maria River. He ran as many as 300 head of white faced cattle on the ranch, which he named TVT. Despite a lameness which resulted from infantile paralysis when he was a baby, he was a skilled horseman and roper and never permitted his affliction to handicap him in any way in the operation of his ranch.

Mr. Cannon told many interesting stories of his early day experiences in this region, but the one which impressed him the most, and which he never forgot, was in connection with the Walnut Grove flood on Washington's Birthday in 1894. In that tragic catastrophe of early Arizona, Mr. Cannon personally recovered bodies of 14 men, women and children from the raging waters of the Hassayampa, which, after 16 days and nights of steady rain, took out the earthen dam and carried to their death more than 200 people residing in the Walnut Grove and other settlements downstream.

Funeral services for Mr. Cannon were held at the Wickenburg Chapel last Monday and he was laid to rest in the Wickenburg Cemetery. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Inez Cannon, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Cannon, Congress, and two sisters and a brother in California.

Source: The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, Arizona, published May 19, 1944

There's also a marriage listed to Rosanna Pope, with 1 child, possibly she was a 1st wife?

Hope this helps.

Sandi

This summer I have been walking the Lafayette, CO cemetery and have found a gravestone for James (1830-1909) and Emily (1833-1909) Cannon. For many years this was coal mining country. Just POSSIBLE they are related to the folks you have been discussing.
I have no other information about them.
Darlene
