Canny from Glenamaddy Galway

I am trying to find members of my son-in-law's family who are descendants of Patrick Canny and his wife Honoria Hussey of Glenamaddy Galway.

Patrick and Honoria had about 13 children - my son-in-law's grandfather was their son Thomas James, who was born in 1919. He came to England with 2 of his brothers (Edward and - probably - Patrick) when he was about 13. Thomas died in 1972.

Two of his sisters, Mary and Margaret emigrated to New York and had families there.

Does anyone know anything more about this family?
In particular does anyone know which of the family was living in Barna Cottage, Glenamaddy in the 1950s?

I can get you a print copy, but in the meantime, you can read the on line version of the Irish Survivor of Hiroshima story at http://irishamericanstoryproject.com/?p=110

Hope to hear from you.

Ed Murphy

I found your message as I was visiting a Clonbur site. I, too, have a Clonbur and Pittsburgh connection. My grandmother, Bridget Alice O'Hara, was born in Clonbur about 1882. She told me they shopped in Fair Hill. She told me about going to school there and learning to write script. Her mother carried her piggy back to school sometimes. Her mother was Catherine Tougher O'Hara...married to John O'Hara. He traveled to America to earn money to bring the family over. Sadly, he was struck by a train in Baltimore and died. (To confuse the issue, his name was listed as Michael on Catherine Tougher's death certificate.) My grandmother told me her faather was buried in Tourmakeady. Catherine Tougher then came to America with her older daughter and worked at the William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh. They saved money for two years to bring my grandmother and her two older brothers, Patrick and Peter, to America. My grandmother was 7 when she arrived. Apparently, family looked after the three children while their mother was in America. So, I know I must have relatives in your area. I thought, after reading your post, that the Clonbur/Pittsburgh connection was interesting. I've always wanted to research the family, but I understand the church that had the records burned and many records were lost. The remaining records are with another Catholic Church in the area.

Sorry to be so long answering. I am working out of town so don't have access to my papers, but most of the info that I have on George and family was from research originally done by the late Douglas Canny. I don't have any notation in my database about the census records,so may not have personally checked them. I can tell you the Douglas was never able to discover who George Sr's wife was, but did have suspicions that his parents were Joseph Canny and Rebecca Brown and that at the time of his untimely death he was working on connecting George back to the New England Canney family.

My great grandmother Almira Jane Canny Beckley was the daughter of John Canny and Eliza Thompson, born mid 1840's In Athens County, Ohio. She would wed Samuel Beckley and primarily live in eastern Vinton County, Ohio, buried about 1917 at Temple Cemetery in nearby Columbia Twp, Meigs County, Ohio.

I've seen the internet postings taking the Canny's back through my John to George Jr and Mary Bowman to George Senior(born in Pa and died in Athens County, Ohio).

Where does the connection go back in time from there to Ireland? Thanks, Mike at msb@core.com
