Anne and Jane b. c1813 Fayette Pa: Are they John's daughters?

Searching for parents of Anne and Jane Canon/Cannon, who were born between roughly 1813 and 1817 Fayette Co Pa. Their mother was probably Jane McGinty. The father died at around the time the youngest was born, his name may have been John. Jane remarried William Hiland and moved the family to Meigs Co Ohio. Does anybody know who the father is and how he is related to the rest of the Canons around Fayette during that time period? Thanks for all help. Nancy

Canon/Cannon of Western PA.

Sorry I have not checked the CANON board for a long time, since my lineage uses the name CANNON. All legal documentation, bios, obituaries and etc. uses the latter spelling with the exception of my ggrandfather Samuel Canon. My records show the following:
THOMAS CANNON b. Abt. 1755 Philadelphia (?) d 1818. 1st m. RACHEL COYLE b. unknown at unknown. Children: MOSES b. 1782 Philadelphia; JOHN b. Washington Co., PA d. 5/27/1835 Middlesex, Mercer Co., PA.; RACHEL b. Abt. 1788 d. 12/20/1864; ROSS b. Unknown at unknown (Ross could be the diminutive of Erasmus); RUTH b. Unknown at unknown; THOMAS b. Unknown at unknown (Note; Loretta Evans discovered a letter dated 5 March 1818, showing Thomas Cannon, Jr. has posted a bond as administrator of his late father's estate.); REBECCA b. Unknown at unknown.
THOMAS CANNON 2nd married, MARGARET HEATH b. 10/1/1764 Allegheny Co/. PA., d. Aft 1820 Shenango Twp., Mercer Co., PA.
Samuel Canon bio

SAMUEL CANON, farmer, post-office Greenville, was born in Fayette County, Penn, August 7, 1805. His parents, Matthew and Jane (McMillan) Canon, were natives of Ireland, who immigrated to Fayette County, Penn., in the latter part of the eighteenth century, where they engaged in the mercantile and hotel business, which proved quite successful for a number of years, the dry goods being purchased in Baltimore, Md., and hauled over the Allegheny Mountains by six-horse teams, which required six weeks to make one trip and incurred many hardships. He reared a family of fourteen children, Samuel, the subject of this sketch, being the youngest. He died in 1829, aged seventy-four years; his wife survived him six years. Samuel grew to manhood in his native county, and was there married, in March, 1832, to Mary Gibson, a native of the same county. In February, 1833, they removed to Mercer County, Penn., and settled on the farm where he now resides, it being uncleared at that time. Here they reared a family of seven children, four daughters and three sons: Martha, wife of T. A. Williamson, of Greenville, Penn.; Margaret, widow of Joseph Andrews; Mary, Sarah, John, Samuel and Loverayne. Mrs. Canon died March 10, 1884, aged seventy-four years; she was a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church, to which denomination Mr. Canon also belongs. Politically he has been a life-long, unswerving Democrat. He cast his first vote for Jackson in 1828, and has never missed voting for the presidential nominee of the Democratic party during the past sixty years. He is one of the few living early settlers of West Salem Township, where he has resided over fifty-five years.

History of Mercer County, PA, 1888, pages 1172-1173
Young Laura Canon's grave desecrated

This one always causes a lump in my throat.

Buried in Wedding Dress

Another, sadder story tells of a young lady whose wedding day was not far away when she became ill and died. Shrouded in her wedding dress, she was laid to rest in the old cemetery on the Canon Plantation, before the Civil War. Seventy years later ghouls uncovered her grave.

The following account was clipped from The Commercial Appeal of May 2, 1935:

"Apparently incited by a 70-year-old tale of buried antebellum treasure, ghouls yesterday desecrated the graves of aristocratic Southerners who were buried in the private cemetery before the Civil War.

“Early this week, residents of the Red Banks community in the vicinity of the old Canon plantation, reported seeing the strangers with "divining rods," which are supposed to be sensitized to buried metal.

“Yesterday, a farmer in search of a lost calf, found that half a dozen or more graves had been laid
bare. Several bodies were missing.

“In one of the graves, and in a copper coffin, lay the body of a young girl, supposed to have been
Laura Canon, who died before the Civil War. She was richly dressed, her face and features perfectly preserved. A net, like a bridal veil, covered her bright red hair.

“The grave of another member of the family, M. H. Canon, who was born in Lindburg County, N. C in 1807, was also opened and the coffin glass broken. The body was missing. A third vault containing the body of Cornelia E. Canon Houston, wife of W. C. Houston was entered. Mrs. Houston was born in 1822 and died at the age of 47. Her long red hair, a characteristic of the Canon family aided in identification.

“Shortly after the war, stories were circulated that valuable jewels and gold coins had been hidden in the graveyard. Many had searched fruitlessly in the vicinity, but until yesterday none had violated the sleep of the dead."

-30-

The Canon Family

There were two brothers, Harvey and Alfred Canon and their families who were in the Exodus
Company and settled near Red Banks. Their sister, Margaret Louise Canon, later became the
second wife of Dr. R. W. Martin.

The Canons owned large plantations and many slaves. Alfred 0. Canon was a Ruling Elder of
Philadelphia Church in 1875. He and his family later moved to Germantown, TN (NOTE: In my mother's hand: " ( Note form my mother: “This is incorrect - he never moved.").

Harvey lived near Victoria Miss. and had his own burying ground on his plantation.' His daughter,
Laura, died just before she was to be married and was interred in the family burying ground dressed in her wedding dress and veil. Cornelia Canon Houston was also one of Harvey's daughters.

Thomas Wilson Martin married Matilda Jane Newell. Their daughters are Mrs. V. A. Furr and Mrs. Ralph Walker. (T. W. Martin was the son of Margaret Canon and Dr. R. W. Martin.)
