Hi Nicholas,

It appears that this email was written 12 years ago, so I hope my email reaches you. I am actually helping a friend of mine on starting to research his family. His grandfather is Aldo and his great-grandfather is Quinto...so you guys must be cousins (and probably know each other).

I haven't seen your family tree posted. I'm trying to get any information that I can. Would you be willing to share anything regarding what you have found regarding Quinto's part of the family? Also, Aldo's wife, Mary...what was her last name before she was married? My friend didn't have much information on her, either.

Thanks in advance for any information you may have...or anyone else out there who may have some information. :)

I am interested in Edward Canova, who was born in 1870 in Florida. He married my great-grandmother's daughter Mary Ellen Binnewies. They had two children LeRoy Edward and Agnes Gertrude Canova. They lived in Jacksonville, FL.

Hello Mr. Canova. I would like to share with you the history of my name, which is Canobra. This comes from the mouth of my paternal grandmother who learned it from my paternal grandfather. They were from Chile.

In 1849 (the year of the gold rush in the U.S.), three brothers of the Canova family left Europe for California. As the Panama canal did not open for business until 1914, they had to sail around the Straight of Magellan. Upon rounding the cape the ship docked in Southern Chile to take on supplies. The youngest brother got drunk and did not make it back to the ship before it's departure. He was forced into the police/military as he did not have the papers to allow him to stay. As any person has the right to do, he changed his name upon becoming Chilean.

I was told that he changed his name by substituting the "v" with "br" because he thought "Canova" was too common and the rolling "r" sounded poetic, or something.

As such, I think that my name of Canobra is an evolution of the name Canova. I have also read that the name Canova exists in many sea ports around the world. I think that there was a time that Canova was a common mariners name.

You should be proud of the name Canova. Antonio Canova was a great artist. As for the Canobra, we have had a police chief, school principle, international diplomat, photographer, chief engineer, and architect.

Hi. Do you think Canova and Canovai are the same or related? My relatives settled mostly in the Jersey City, NJ area in the laste 1800s and early 1900s. I think the relatives came mainly from the Genova, Sestri Ponte area.

I live in Fernandina Beach,Fl, which is 40 miles northeast of Jacksonville,Fl. My great-aunt, Mary Binnewies, married Edward F. Canova in Jacksonville, Fl. There many Canova's in Florida.

I know that my last name (Canobra) came from the name Canova. I also know that the name Canova comes from the hyphenated name of "Casa-Nova". That name, as far as I can tell, comes from the northern Italian city of Venice. Ancestors of these peoples can be proud of the way we united and defended our town from the Hun and Lombard invaders (more or less). Also, you will likely find a "Canova" in every seaport in the world, suggesting that there were a few sailors who liked to set up shop. My ancestors were like this. The youngest stayed in Chile and changed the name to Canobra. The eldest two went on to California for gold in 1849.

Hello, my name is Breanna Conova. I am also having a hard time trying to find out info on the name. I am however finding out that my name must have been spelled wrong on my father's birth certificate because i am having no luck finding anything with the spelling i have. My father died in 1985 and i don't talk to my grandmother much. The only info i have on my grandfather is he was a traveling italian musician named Don Conova or Canova. Hello Everyone, I've been reading all the views and would be interested if anyone is related to John J. Canova. He arrived at Ellis Island from Napoli in early 1900's. He was my Grandfather. He finally settled in McKeesport, PA. My Grandfather was a stone mason by trade and also worked in the local steel mills. My Grandmother's name was Rosalia Vallelunga and she was from Sicily. They had ( ) children. Louis - my Father, Mary, Vera, Michael, Salvador, Frank, and James. All are deceased except for Mary (Kennedy). I'm looking forward to any responses.

Lester Charles Canova, 82, of South Yarmouth died Nov. 15, at Cape Cod Hospital after battling cancer for two years.
He was the husband of Ruth Canova.
Born in Holyoke, he graduated from Holyoke High School in 1944 and served in the Army Air Forces during World War II. He received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., in 1948. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and the Honorary Engineering Society. He also studied at Lowell Textile Institute and Boston University.
Mr. Canova was a registered professional engineer in New York and Massachusetts. Throughout his career he earned numerous awards for outstanding achievements in the air-conditioning industry.
He was an avid golfer and an active member of the "60s League" at Bass River and Bayberry Hills Golf Club.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Janice MacNeary; a son, Jeffrey; brothers Alfred and Ronald Canova; and a granddaughter.
A private burial service was held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
Memorial donations may be sent to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 765 Attucks Lane, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Secondia is pictured in the 1917 Pedagogue, yearbook of Southwest State Normal School, now Texas State University, in San Marcos, Texas. She is a freshman. I'm not kin but thought this might help others.

Do you have an Edward F. Canova married to a Mamie or Mary E . Bennewies? They got their marriage license in Duval County. I believe they were married my Rector Shield in St. Augustine.

Hi, I am looking for any info on a Delia Francis Trank Canova who died 11-22-1960 at her home in Voorhesville new york She was the wife of Richard Canova. Mother of Harry A Canova & Clarence R Canova of Troy NY. Also listed in her obit is that she was the sister of Joseph Trank of Troy.
This woman is listed in my ggmothers obit (Mary Jane Shortsleeves Rube, who died 3-26-1935 at 52 yrs old) as her sister, along with brothers Joseph,Fred,& Albert Trank & another sister, Mrs William Tanner of Troy.Any info will be greatly appreciated. This family has me going round & round in circles but, I do not seem to be getting anywhere.......

Hi. Iam trying to find the connection between the Pettys/Armstrongs and Conovas of jacksonville,Florida.
My g,grandmother,Jessica(Jessie)Mariah Petty Armstrong died in 1901 while the great fire of Jacksonville was going on. She was married to Charles R. Armstrong and it is said that Jessicas brother n law(a Conova) moved her from her mothers house to his house because of the fire. I don't have any siblings or parents names for Jessica and i was wondering if i could find it here.

the only thing I found on my mom was her Baptism papers
Her dad's name was Guiseppe Canova. her mom's name was Ana DiPrima. her godparents were Guiseppe Marquese and Margarita Mancusa,I'm not sure if that last name is spelled right, can't make it out on the paper. Hope this helps a little. And by the way we are having a family reunion on Nov. 5th at the lake front in N.O.

I came across a Pierre Armand Donaldson whose mother was listed as Marcelinne Gravois. She was born 4-29-1817 in Donaldsonville, Ascension, La. She married Valsin Donaldson on 6-22-1830 in St. John Parish La.

Hello Joe !!! Always good to hear from another Italian Canova !!! Your posting shows your great-grandmother's location was in northern Italy. As I have stated in other postings, Canovas originate in the north of Italy. In fact, In some northern locales it is considered a common name. I have a question, Are you trying to find out more info on your great-grandmother? It sounds like you have info on her already, but if you are searching for additional facts the information you supplied is perfect to start with. You can write/call the local officials in the town where she died, they can then give you additional info, (you can do this in English or Italian {they can translate}). Do you know her birthplace? This would be another place to start, if you don't, you might get her birthplace from the death certificate.You might also get her parental information which would expand your personal tree, unless you already possess that information. Another thought would be to contact the Italian Consulate through the American Embassy in Italy, they could give you much more networking/contacts etc...In any event, good luck and best wishes. I've read through the Canova links here and wish I had this much information on my family. I am Joe Foggiato, my great-grandmother was Orsola Canova, who died in Cavaso Del Tomba (Venice province near Treviso) on June 18, 1929. She was married to Giovanni Foggiato. Their son, Guiseppe came to America and eventually settled in Northern California. If you come across Orsola's name in your search, please let me know and I'll send you her photo.

Donnelle... Have found a marriage listing for a Pierre Armand Donaldson and a Jeanne Noelina Berdou in St. John the Baptist Parish, La. The date is 2-8-1869. You may wish to check the Diocese of New Orleans Archives for this record.
A Pierre Armant Donaldson and his wife, Noelina, appear on the 1870 St. Jonh the Baptist, La. Census. They are found in Ward 3 Part 5 , Dwelling #205 Family #217.

Are you having trouble researching "Dominique Canova"? If you are, it could be due to spelling. In Italian, the male version of Dominick is spelled, Domenico, if female, then Domenica. The Italian language does not use the letter "q". I hope that this is helpful.

I just learned of this site. My name is Theodore Carl Canova.
I was born in Key West, Fl in 1948. My father's name was
Theodore Camille Canova. He was born in St. Augustine, Fl
in 1908. His father's name was Antonio Canova.
I know I have many relatives in Florida whom I have never
met. In Rockledge, Merrit Island, Canova Beach etc., and
probably other parts of Fla.
