Hi Nicholas,

It appears that this email was written 12 years ago, so I hope my email reaches you. I am actually helping a friend of mine on starting to research his family. His grandfather is Aldo and his great-grandfather is Quinto...so you guys must be cousins (and probably know each other).

I haven't seen your family tree posted. I'm trying to get any information that I can. Would you be willing to share anything regarding what you have found regarding Quinto's part of the family? Also, Aldo's wife, Mary...what was her last name before she was married? My friend didn't have much information on her, either.

Thanks in advance for any information you may have...or anyone else out there who may have some information. :)

Tim

Hello Mr. Canova. I would like to share with you the history of my name, which is Canobra. This comes from the mouth of my paternal grandmother who learned it from my paternal grandfather. They were from Chile.

In 1849 (the year of the gold rush in the U.S.), three brothers of the Canova family left Europe for California. As the Panama canal did not open for business until 1914, they had to sail around the Straight of Magellan. Upon rounding the cape the ship docked in Southern Chile to take on supplies. The youngest brother got drunk and did not make it back to the ship before it's departure. He was forced into the police/military as he did not have the papers to allow him to stay. As any person has the right to do, he changed his name upon becoming Chilean.

I was told that he changed his name by substituting the "v" with "br" because he thought "Canova" was too common and the rolling "r" sounded poetic, or something.

As such, I think that my name of Canobra is an evolution of the name Canova. I have also read that the name Canova exists in many sea ports around the world. I think that there was a time that Canova was a common mariners name.

You should be proud of the name Canova. Antonio Canova was a great artist. As for the Canobra, we have had a police chief, school principle, international diplomat, photographer, chief engineer, and architect.

I hope you gain a small degree of incite with this entry. Contact me if you have any further questions.

I know that my last name (Canobra) came from the name Canova. I also know that the name Canova comes from the hyphenated name of "Casa-Nova". That name, as far as I can tell, comes from the northern Italian city of Venice. Ancestors of these peoples can be proud of the way we united and defended our town from the Hun and Lombard invaders (more or less). Also, you will likely find a "Canova" in every seaport in the world, suggesting that there were a few sailors who liked to set up shop. My ancestors were like this. The youngest stayed in Chile and changed the name to Canobra. The eldest two went on to California for gold in 1849.

Hello, my name is Breanna Conova. I am also having a hard time trying to find out info on the name. I am however finding out that my name must have been spelled wrong on my father's birth certificate because i am having no luck finding anything with the spelling i have. My father died in 1985 and i don't talk to my grandmother much. The only info i have on my grandfather is he was a traveling italian musician named Don Conova or Canova. I have tried to find anyone that i might be related to but no luck. If you could contact me and tell me where i can start i would grately appreciate it. Plz send any info to virtuouswoman317@yahoo.com. Thank you so much

Hello Everyone, I've been reading all the views and would be interested if anyone is related to John J. Canova. He arrived at Ellis Island from Napoli in early 1900's. He was my Grandfather. He finally settled in McKeesport, PA. My Grandfather was a stone mason by trade and also worked in the local steel mills. My Grandmother's name was Rosalia Vallelunga and she was from Sicily. They had ( ) children. Louis - my Father, Mary, Vera, Michael, Salvador, Frank, and James. All are deceased except for Mary (Kennedy). I'm looking forward to any responses.

Hello Joe !!! Always good to hear from another Italian Canova !!! Your posting shows your great-grandmother's location was in northern Italy. As I have stated in other postings, Canovas originate in the north of Italy. In fact, In some northern locales it is considered a common name. I have a question, Are you trying to find out more info on your great-grandmother? It sounds like you have info on her already, but if you are searching for additional facts the information you supplied is perfect to start with. You can write/call the local officials in the town where she died, they can then give you additional info, (you can do this in English or Italian {they can translate}). Do you know her birthplace? This would be another place to start, if you don't, you might get her birthplace from the death certificate. You might also get her parental information which would expand your personal tree, unless you already possess that information. Another thought would be to contact the Italian Consulate through the American Embassy in Italy, they could give you much more networking/contacts etc...In any event, good luck and best wishes. Thank you for responding and let me know if I can be of help, ( Italian translation { if you need it}).
Regards, Nick

Hi all,

I've read through the Canova links here and wish I had this much information on my family. I am Joe Foggiato, my great-grandmother was Orsola Canova, who died in Cavaso Del Tomba (Venice province near Treviso) on June 18, 1929. She was married to Giovanni Foggiato. Their son, Guiseppe came to America and eventually settled in Northern California. If you come across Orsola's name in your search, please let me know and I'll send you her photo.

Thanks,
Joe
jfoggiato@hotmail.com

You may wish to check the Diocese of New Orleans Archives for this record.
A Pierre Armant Donaldson and his wife, Noelina, appear on the 1870 St. Jonh the Baptist, La. Census. They are found in Ward 3 Part 5 , Dwelling #205 Family #217.
Hopefully this may help you. Jeanette

Hello Donnelle!!!
Are you having trouble researching "Dominique Canova"? If you are, it could be due to spelling. In Italian, the male version of Dominick is spelled, Domenico, if female, then Domenica. The Italian language does not use the letter "q". I hope that this is helpful.

Most Canovas who post here seem to be Spanish/Italian. I am interested in your cultural heritage, Do you know it? As I said there is good likelyhood that you may well be of Menorcan descent. I am very glad that you learned so much by visiting here. That's what it is supposed to be about.

hi. my name is nicholas canova, i have been trying to research the canova tree for a little while now. in my wanderings i have found that there is a very large branch of canova's that came to america to florida in the late 1700's. they came from an island off the coast of spain called minorica(sp). i have been able to trace this branch back as far as a jeoff(sp) born app. 1550, this is where my trail for this particular branch dead ends. i don't know how these canova's got there from italy but i do know that the canova surname IS of italian origin. many of these minorica/florida canovas are having a reunion in fl this oct., (approx 150).this branch now extends as far north as ct, as far west as california and as far south as texas. also i know that some canovas settled in argentina, a very common destination for italians, perhaps another branch? additionally, i know that various other branches have come to america in the late 1800's directly from italy. they settled in various areas, mostly in the north east, at least to start. my family being one of them. my grandfather's name was aldo, born 1913, my greatgrandfather's name was quinto. i have relatives,(quinto's family) in northern nj. quinto settled in ct where his offspring remain. i know that my family comes from torino italy, which is located in northern italy. the canova name has it's origins in this region. further, i believe that all branches lead back there... ...it's a matter of figuring out how. finally the name canova IS NOT COMMON, therefore, it is my belief that we are probably ALL related in some way. i would love hearing from any of you to share information, etc... thank you!

I am interested in finding out where in Italy your great, great, grandfather Natal came from. The word natale means christmas in Italian, I wonder if he was born in December, many times children were given names due to circumstances around their birth. My family and I make our oun wine too, as well as hard sausage. Also, one of my daughters names is Julia too. I agree that it is nice to know another Canova in the world.
Hello Frank !!! I just visited your site, Very impressive!!! We must have searched in similar places because much of my research of the Canova surname reflects yours. I am begining to believe that much that is posted has been posted by Canova's of Fl., Menorca lineage. I still believe that there is a connection to italy. Why would both of us, as well as many scholars( who have written books on the Menorca Canova's), dead end with Jeoff? If the lineage starts there, why does the documentation dead end? There should be more. It is strange that there is not. All the more to point to some unknown connection don't you think? I have believed this for some years, but I have been unable to substantiate this. As for my own particular tree, I have information, but nothing in the form of a web site. I would be interested in discussing this more.I'll e-mail your site. Thanks for responding !!!

Shaun, It's great to hear that you were at the Canova reunion in St. Augustine. I was there as well, but never of course met everyone. If you are part of the George Paul line, then I think I have recorded your linage properly, but could you check it please? I don't have any birth dates, and am not sure if there are missing kids. Your entry (I believe) is at:

http://www.geocities.com/canova3/tree/g038.html#I381

Incidentally, photos are uploaded as well from the reunion. You can see them from a link on the home page. Are you in any of them?

-Frank Canova
