I don't know anything really about the canters. I was born in reidsville NC in 1979 and have been living in VA since 1985. My dads name is of course same as mine he has a brother name jimmy and a sister that I don't name of. Their parents names my grandparents were Gus and Roseanna Canter I believe! I don't really know much and not sure if grandparents names are correct. I was between 4 and 5 when the passed away. Haven't seen birth father since I was five so I haven't had any connection with canter family my entire life and would really like to get to know them if anyone knows!

Canter Family and Native American Link

I have been told that my Canter family were at some point Native Americans but I can't seem to find the connection. My great grandmother is Barbara Ellen Canter b. 11/10/1871 in Jackson County, OH. Her father was William Canter b. ~1833 in Jackson County and died 1/10/1880 - buried in South Webster, OH. I think William was married to Elizabeth Whitt. Any help appreciated :)

Erasmus Canter ..There were two of them folks !

For many years we have accepted that Erasmus Canter who married Rebecca Horn was the son of James Canter Sr, son of William Canter,Sr.(1720-1798)

We have done DNA tests that prove that this Erasmus was related closer to Thomas Canter (1717-1778)than to William Sr.

There were TWO Erasmus CANTERS in the same area at the same time...one was born four years before the one named above.

The older Erasmus may well have been the son of James Sr, but he ended up in Washington, DC and also fought in the War of 1812.

The Erasmus who settled in Surry County, N Carolina was likely the son of Jonathan Canter, son of Thomas Canter...as were several other Canters who were in N Carolina very early on.

I welcome discussion on this matter...my email is

papcanter@yahoo.com

Mike Canter
