I am looking for the parents of Ezekiel Eli Canterbury, Sr he was born abt 1794 in Va and married Rachel Stover in Giles Co, VA in 1822/1823. They had nice (9) children.

Shelby Canterbury was my grandfather. He was married to Rebecca Runyon in 1909. They had 12 children: Andy, Flora, Ruby, Dora, Charles, Sadie, Ernie, Edmond, Calvin, Lawrence, Margaret, and Smithe. Shelby and Rebecca moved to Ohio 1953: many of their children followed. Shelby' father's name was Smithe (1865-1902) and Dora Calgrove (876-1891). She died during childbirth of their 3rd son, James. Shelby dies 8/11/1960 from Black Lung. My grandmother lived off his coal mining pension and Black Lung settlement until she died in 1988 due to natural causes. I hope this helps.

Rufus Canterbury was the great-grandfather of my late husband through his second wife.
I am very interested in obtaining copies of Reuben Canterbury's probate records from Coles County, Ill., the probate records of his wife, Elzira, the record of their son Rufus P. Canterbury's marriage to his first wife, Lida, and information on the newspaper Rufus was involved in as well as his guardianship papers. I would be please to pay for all copying and postage, etc.
I would be glad to share with you all of the information I have collected on the family of Elzira Moseley, wife of Rueben Canterbury.

The Canterbury's in Illinois came here in 1823 from Kentucky, prior to that they came from Virginia, All Canterbury's in America are related. I have an extensive background for the family. There are some holes but it seems they came to America in 1638. Roger and Samuel I think they all stem from these men. Please call if you would like to discuss the family Harry Canterbury. The Missouri bunch left Illinois about 1855 or so and went to Burlington. I think that is your branch.

They were from Logan County West Virginia, My grandfathers parents were named Matilda Canterbury (Maiden Name was Vance), and John Henry Canterbury. My grandmother's maiden name was Canterbury, and lived in WV. She died back in 1994, but I don't know much about her side of the family. I do recall being told her father or grandfather was a riverboat captain, or worked on the Kanawha river in some capacity. Not a common name, so there may be some relation.

Her name was Josephine (Canterbury) Gardner, and would have been born in 1912 I believe.

Hello. I do not have this surname on my family tree.

I am offering an FYI. I found a reference to a Nathan D. CANTERBURY owning land in Arlington, MA, in the 1890's.

I checked census information and there was a Nathan D. CANTERBURY living in Weymouth, MA, in 1880. And, an older Nathan CANTERBURY there.

And, there were at least 2 other Nathan's in MA and NH in 1880.

I just checked this Board and the related List, and I don't see CANTERBURY's in MA mentioned in the archives.

J. B. CANTERBURY, was born in County Wicklow, Ireland, in 1837; came to America in 1859; came to Beaver Dam the same fall. Enlisted in the 5th W. V. I. in 1861; served three and a half years; came to La Crosse after the war, in 1865, and commenced the grain business. Mr. Canterbury was married to Miss Katherine May Livingston in 1865; has no children. He is at present grain buyer on the Madison Division of the Chicago & North-Western Railway.

I'm searching for the Canterburys that migrated from Kentucky to Chariton Co, MO in the mid to late 1800s. I do not know where in KY they were from. John Canterbury was born in 1806 and his daughter, Jane, was born in 1829. Jane married Harvey BRADLEY and she was a midwife in Chariton County for many many years.

I made a trip to Sevier County last weekend. I found the following [spelling is at it appeared in the court text]

I William Canterbury of the County of Sevier and state of Tennessee being now old and mindful that it is appointed to all men once to die do mak and ordain this to be my last will and testiment in relation to the good thinges of this world withe which it has pleased god to bless me. FIRST. I give and devise to the children heirs of Edward Calvert born of his wife Nancy my daughter to wit Betsey Calvert James Calvert Patric Calvert and Alenander Calvert and also James Toomy my farm called the Calvert place to be eqally divided among them and their heirs.
SECONDLY I give and divise to Samuel Pate and his wife Hannah the plantation I now live on and also the Atchley farm on Milliken to be held and enjoyed by the said Samuel Pate and Hannah during her life and after her death my will is that the two said tracts of land shall go in equal shares to the children of the said Hannah and their heirs.

I allso give and bequeath to the said (Hannah is crossed out here) Samuel Pate and his wife Hannah my slaves Kiziah and her chile Martha also George Henry Preston and Pleasant to be held and possessed by them during the life of the said Hannah and after her death my (death is crossed out here) will is that the intrest and prosperity of said slaves shall vest equally in the children and heirs of the said Hannah. THIRDLY my plantation called the Moon Places on the Flaterak and one hundred acer tract called my entry joining or nearly joining the said Moon place I give and devise its my encieretory? heare after to be named to be by them sold on a twelve months credit and the proceeds there of to be equally divided between Absalom Lively and his wife Rebeckah and Thomas Guthry and his wife Sally or in case any of the parties should die befour this my will takes effect then their presentating to steward? in the place of the deceaced party us? to said divide. To the said Thomas Guthry and his wife Polly I also give and bequeath my slave Lane and her three children to be held and posesed by them during the life of the said Polly and after her decease. It is my will that said slaves go to the children of the said Polly in eaqual shares and interest.
FOURTHLY To Daniel Atchley and his wife Sally I give and devise my two tracts of land called the Campbell place where the said Daniel and his wife now lives to be held and enjoyed by them and the survivors of them and after the deceased of the survivor to their heirs. To the said Daniel Atchley and his said wife Sally I also give and bequeath my slaves Fan? Frank and Seinth to be by them owned and posesed during their joint lives and the survivors of them and after their decease to their heirs. It is also my will that the said Daniel and Sally shall maintain and support my old slave Fillie and if at any time they or survivor of them shall refuse to do so then and in that case their right to the slave hearby bequathes to them shall cease and the right of said slave shall vest in such of my heirs as shall provide a suitable maintenance and support for said Filley. FIFTH. My slaves Abe and Elisa I give and bequeath to Absalom Sivley? and his wife Rebeka during their [?aint?] lives and aftaer their death of the survivor to their children. SIXTHLY My will and desire thats all my personal property except cash on hand and except such as has been heare in before disposed of be sold and a credit of twelve months and that any of the proceeds there of one hundred dollars be paid Absalom Sivley and his wife Rebekah or either of them.

It is also my will that all the ballance of the proceeds of the said sale of personal property shall the cash on hand and such debts as may be collected shall (after defraying the expenses of my burial out of cash on hand and the paying of such little abide? as I may justly and if any) beequally divided between Absalom Sivly and his said wife. Thomas Guthery and his said wife. Samuel Pate and his said wife and Daniel Atchley and his said wife. So that each man and his wife or their representatives shall receive on fourth part of the said proceeds debts and cash on hand.
SEVENTHLY It is my will that James Toomy and Daniel Atchley execute and carry in to effect this my will and that when it shall pleas god to separate my soul from my body it is my will that they burry my mortal remains in a decent and christian like manner and pay the expenses there of out of the money on hand.

James Canterbury is my ggggrandfather. I am also stuck. What information I have, I received from another relative, and it is rather vague. I have that he was born in Giles County, Virginia, married on January 13, 1823 and that he died on August 23, 1866.

i have the probate records of reuben canterbury of coles co illinois, his wife elzira's probate records, rufus's guardianship papers of his duaghter after his wife lida died, franklin's probate from coles co., his son's guardianship papers, and will be getting records for goodwin's estate, admins. nimrod canterbury. i have the marriage license of lida to rufus p. canterbury and a record of a newpaper he owned part of. there is a record of the paper on microfilm and i will be checking it out to see if he wrote any articles.

i recently started a job 60 hrs. a week and haven't been able to keep up with my searches. i have copies that i am sending to someone else and would be happy to mail you copies, no money necessary. i am afraid i can't scan. i am related to cynthia canterbury, his sister. she married a sperry and their daughter married theodore jones, which is my last name. however, i discovered that i live 15 minutes away from where reubin and franklin lived in charelston, illinois, so i thought i would look up the information for others. i have found probate records for ruebin, franklin and rufus's wife concerning their daughter as well as a record i think for her mother, who came from a wealthy family in kentucky. it names i think lida's family members and there is a letter from an uncle. i found a map that shows the land that reubin owned and records for his wife and son when they moved to champaign illinois. i haven't looked at these items in several months, but i will get them out. ther is a probate record for goodin canterbury listing his father's name in missouri. i'll check my mail more often, sorry for the delay.

Joel & Joseph Canterbury of Giles VA & Gallia OH

The 1840 census for Gallia County, Ohio shows a Joel Canterbury and a Joseph Canterbury living next door to each other. Both are from Virginia. Joel is age 60-70. Joseph is age 30-40.

I have been told that "Isaac Joel & Sarah Canterbury" are the parents of Joseph Canterbury.... Does anyone have proof of this? (or know anything more about the parents?)

And is the "Joel" on the 1840 Gallia census the same "Isaac Joel" said to be Joseph's father?

I have been told Joseph comes from Giles, VA. And there is this:

1830 census of Giles, VA lists a Joel, Joseph, Joseph, and James Canterbury.

1820 census of Giles, VA lists a Joel, Joseph, and Jane Canterbury.

1810 census of Giles, VA lists a Joel and Joseph Canterbury.

Does anyone know who the other Joseph is??

Also, I have also been told that Joseph married Nancy Bowen. Does anyone have proof of this?

And, there is a Levi Canterbury in Lawrence Co & Gallia Co around the same time as Joel & Joseph. Levi appears to have come from Monroe County, VA. Does anyone know the connection (if any) between Joel, Joseph and Levi?

I'm trying to find out more about Will Canterbury.

I was told that Will fought in two wars -- Spanish American war and Civil war. Lived to be over 100. And married girl named Transylvania (probably his second wife) Clegg (possibly Clagg), a native american or part native american. At some point they lived in Texas.

He and Transylvania had at least one child name Nora (possibly Evie Nora, or short for something else) who married Fred McBride.

I think he was born abt 1845 in either OH or IL.

Other spelling: Canterberry

His middle name might be Harrison?

If any of this sounds familiar, any more insight into his family would be appreciated.

Far as I can tell Joseph Canterbury was born April 01,1857 in Logan Co,Wv the s/o Ezekiel " Eli " Canterbury & Eliza Clark and died Jan. 14,1904 in Mingo Co,Wv; he married Jan. 15,1887 in Logan Co,Wv; to Martha Jane Runyon d/o William Calahan Runyon & Mariah Jane "Jennie" Varney; Martha was born Oct.21,1867 in Logan Co,Wv and died May 11,1934 in Mingo Co,Wv; Joseph and Martha had three children that I seen in the census.

I am researching the family of George and Marie Canterbury. Their son, Leonard was my husband's step-father. The story that we have was that both parents died and the children, William, Water, Roy, leonard and Florence were raised in an orphanage. Any info that you can supply would be helpful. Leonard died in 1995. He has four children who would like to know more about their father.
