Recently saw your 2001 post. My gg grandfather supposed was Thomas H Canty (dropped the e) my g grandfather later picked it back up. Do you have any evidence on his children. My g grandfather was Jasper Newton (first born) the others were James Alexander, Mary and Sara Ann. Wife was Delia Elizabeth (Betsy) Dell. Thomas died a POW in the Civil War.

Who was his father. There are numerous James' with wife Elizabeth. I have cousins also doing research. I do not want to write a book I am just curious to see if we came from Teige lineage. I was born and live in Charleston, S. C. where the Canty's landed from Ireland.
Leah Cantey Walsh

I'm wondering if these Canteys are part of my own line?

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/24080378/family?cfpid=1469778...

Not sure if you can see that. I hail from Jasper Newton Cantey, whose son Benjamin Franklin Cantey was my great-grandfather. Jasper's father was Thomas, but we're having a tough time finding his parents.

They all ended up in SC--in fact, I've discovered some new cousins still there!

If you happen to have any info on this line, I'd love to hear from you. :)

cheers,
christa

christa@mclauthlin.com

My great grandmother was the youngest sister of Selena Shuman Canty. Since Selina was already deceased at the time of her father's death (JJB Shuman) his Will Jasper Newton Canty and his children Thomas H. Canty, AJ Canty and Benjaman F. Canty are named in their grandfather's Will.

I visited Lebanon Cemetery in Scotia, SC and Selena has a stone which states that she was the wife of J. N. Cantey, mother of 3 and the stone was erected by her sons T. H. Cantey and B. F. Cantey. She was born April 14, 1853 and died March 17, 1879.

Marie

Hmmm...have you found any more information on this family? I'm wondering if this is *my* family, too.

My grandmother never knew her father, Benjamin Franklin Cantey. He took off before she was born in 1921, or shortly thereafter. Minnie Belle Metze is her mother (also don't have much info on that side of the family).

Benjamin had a brother named Tom...comsidering "Benjamin Franklin," I'm wondering if "Thomas Jefferson" is his brother.

I also know, from Benjamin's death certificate, that his mother's maiden name was Sherman, but that could be a misspelling or bad data entry.

Ben was born in South Carolina around 1879, died in California 1943. (He had re-married before 1930 to Lillie Oliva Traylor.)

I know he lived in North Dakota for several years. He was there in 1910, but I can't find him in the 1920 census, though I *can* find Minnie Belle and their kids.

Please contact me!

cheers,
christa
christa@mclauthlin.com

Hi, Lorraine!

In 1998, you wrote:

Date: 11/16/1998
Name: Lorraine Anderson
Email: LAnder3232@aol.com

Desperately searching for a Ben or Tom CANTEY who was living in North Dakota maybe 1920....Could be earlier or later.
Need information or descendents from these lines to complete family genealogy on my end. Please respond. Thank you.
LORRAINE ANDERSON, SOUTH CAROLINA

I believe the Ben you're referring to is my great-grandfather. His daughter Myra Belle Cantey Cannon is my grandmother. Please contact me--I'm having a hard time researching him, too!

Benjamin Franklin Cantey had a brother named Tom, possibly another named Willie. Or maybe that's his father's name. (My grandmother had a photo of the 3 of them, and there was some confusion as to the names. I have that picture posted here.)

Interesting that you say Jasper's first wife was a Shuman. On Benjamin's death certificate, it says his mother's maiden name is "Sherman."

cheers,
christa

Wow, I know this quite a few years later, but I'm wondering if you ever got the information you were looking for. Someone in my family did a family tree on my mother's side of the family and traced it all the way back to Teague Cantey's birth in Cork County, Ireland in 1619. You've given me some valuable information as to who his father and some of his other relatives are. I tried to contact you through (I assume) your e-mail, but I don't subscribe to ancestry.com, so this was the only way to do so. Perhaps someone else who has a subscription can forward this information on to you. Thanks for the info you've provided me!

Thomas Walter Cantey - 1887 - ?

Thomas Walter Cantey, born Barnwell, SC and lived in Augusta GA, joined the Army in Columbus, Ohio where his Aunt on his maternal side lived with her family (Laura Beard Witt). Both his parents died at a young age. He became a buglar in the US Army living in New London, CT and at Ft. Wright, NY. The last known info I can find on him is that he was discharged from the Army at Ft. Moultrie, Charleston, SC in 1913. He had a family in New London (which included my mother Nellie Cantey) but I don't know if he returned there. He seems to have disappeared in thin air. He may have died before 1920 as his wife (Fannie Enos Cantey) remarried by that time. They could have divorced also?

ANY IDEAS???

The last known ancestor I have is JASPER NEWTON CANTEY b. 1851 in GA or SC. d. 1915 Charleston,SC. He had siblings James, Mary and Sarah Ann. He was married first to Selina Shuman who died in childbirth. He was married second to Caroline Elizabeth Jones. Caroline had been married once before to Jeremiah Lysaght. Jasper lived in Allendale/Barnwell,SC then moved to Awendaw, SC. Jasper had children Ben, Tom, Annie,John, Arthur, Lillie Belle and Oliver.Jasper's birth family supposedly lived in Screven Co.,GA. for 19 years. They were living in Savannah at the time of the Civil War. It is said that Jasper's father was Thomas Jefferson Cantey and his mother was Delia "Betsy" Elizabeth Calhoun. I cannot find any information on them. Any help is appreciated.

Show us the path to TJC. You don't have to show living people of course. Just to show that you are leaping past what you can document. Do you know when he died to have more information? If you have even one generation which is showing up in a US census 1850 or later where the multiple names in a family are shown. That can help us help you. Let the facts lead you to each ancestor.

MomSmith4
Cantey Board Administrator

JOHN CANTY married MARGARET KERSHAW

I am searching for information on the SC CANTY, KERSHAW, LARKINS & EVANS FAMILIES below, particularly on MARGARET LARKINS who married JOSIAH EVANS. If any of these names are familiar, I'd appreciate hearing from you:

"William and JOHN W. CANTY were among the first settlers of S.C. and were Irish Episcopalians. JOHN married MARGARET KERSHAW. Had several daughters and 2 sons. One daughter, TABITHA married ____ LARKINS. They had 3 daughters. LARKINS died and TABITHA married a Frenchman named LAVAUGHN, who was killed in a runaway accident in Camden. One son, JOHN, (2nd) married Mary___. They had 7 daughters and 1 son.

TABITHA CANTY married (1) LARKINS (2) LAVAUGHN." I believe that her daughter MARGARET LARKINS, who married JOSIAH EVANS, was my ancestor: "Children of MARGARET LARKINS and JOSIAH EVANS: JOHN, George, Josiah, Tabitha, Comfort, Arabella & Margaret."

JOHN EVANS, along with his brothers George & Josiah, migrated to Wayne County, Mississippi Territory by 1810 and John died there in 1842. His daughter MARGARET (my GGG Grandmother) married CLINCH GRAY September 26, 1811 and died on April 22, 1859.

Larkin Evans (b. 1808 - 1809, SC) accompanied the Evans family to Miss., but his relationship to them is undocumented.
