Canton's from Watson, Minnesota

Johannes and Anne Kanten had four children that left Hadeland, Norway. Three boys Peter, Edward, Thomas and one daughter Mary. Mary may have kept the Kanten spelling and settled in Boston, MA. The boys settled around Watson, Minnesota. There were already Kanten's in the area so they changed their names to Canton. Edward Canton married Clara Schiager from Canton, SD. They had five children:
Morris (died young)
Gerda (married Herman Norland from Cylinder, Iowa)
Paul (married Pearl Torgerson)
Edward S. (married Rita Schield then Sigfrid Sommers)
Coyla (married Irvin Andrews).
Irvin was my dad's uncle. My parents now live on their farm near Watson, MN. Irvin and Coyla never had any children so I am taking over Coyla Canton's family tree. I have an article on Edward Canton and his brother Peter from History of Chippewa County, MN 1993. Any descendents out there?

Helen Florence Canton was adopted in 1893-4 at the age of 8-9 years by William H. and Mary E. Grismer STERRETT in Evansville, Indiana. She lived out her life in Chicago Illinois and was married for a time to Garnet Latham. She had five children. Helen was my grandmother. She professed to be Cherokee Indian... stating to me when I was a child that her father was Shawnee and Irish and her mother was Cherokee. It is assumed that her parents died perhaps during a Tuberculosis epidemic in Vanderburg County Indiana. The curious factor is that the marriage between William and Mary Sterrett didn't take place until 7/5/1894. Would like to find all the missing pieces of Helen's life. Thanks, Leslie

I am trying to find Frank Joseph Canton who I believe was born 1847 in New Orleans, was an orphan, was sent to an orphanage in St Louis, MO (possibly to escape a yellow fever epidemic), joined the Union army at 16 or 17 & served in the Civil War. He married Margaret Jane Dunlap about 1872. They had the following children:
Agnes Celestine b. Sedgwick Co. 1874
Grace Elena b. 1876 m.Charles McKinney 1896
Ulysses Seymour b.1877
Josephene b.1880
LuLu May b 1881
Cary Edna b 1883
Effie Gertrude b. Two Mile, KS 1886
I have census information on them in 1880. Sometime after 1880, Agnes was sent to New York for schooling sometime before 1892 was adopted by Eben Barber and married in 1894, Olin Hotchkiss.

Ulyssess was still in Englewood, Kansas in 1937, but died in LA, CA in 1964.
I believe Effie Gertrude married Frank Mull, had two daughters, and he remarried so I'm assuming a possible early demise for her.

I'm looking for an information about them. Thanks for your help.
Lin
dlmokdoki@aol.com

Laura Canton; 1900s Hamilton, Ohio

I am trying to locate a woman named Laura Canton. She lived in Hamilton, Ohio from 1960s - ?. Laura would have been born between 1910s-1930s. Laura had two daughters, Cora Sue Jenkins and Barbara Jenkins. Both of which were born between 1930s - early 1950s. Barbara has two daughters, Patti Beaver and Melissa Tipton. Both of which were given up for adoption. Melissa is my aunt. She is trying to locate relatives of Laura Canton (her grandmother) in order to find further information concerning the maternal and paternal sides of her family. Cora Sue Jenkins lived in Hamilton, Ohio for a number of years. Barbara was married to David Rose sometime during the mid to late 1960s. We do not know any paternal information is about this family. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much for your time. -gt
