Re: Cantor of Poland- Russia

Hello Marcia. I also have Cantors in my family but as far as I know they are not the same as your Cantors! However, you never know. I am responding to your post though about where to go next. If you have traced your family back to Europe/Russia and cannot find anything else online that is quite normal. Once you have a town/village name you will need to contact someone in that place to look into town records for you. Being Jewish (I am assuming?) you can try to contact synagogues also in and around the town/city where your family was from. Even if they cannot help you they may know of someone who can. I have literally just googled 'synagogues in budapest' (for some of my family history) and just emailed the entire list that google gave me. So you can try that maybe. The problem, of course, is that if the town/village is in Russia then you may be out of luck. Also, if you can contact someone in the place where your family was from you may not find any records but there may be someone that can give you some Jewish history of the town/village to at least give you an idea of exactly what happened to your family during the war. Sometimes thats all you can find but it is at least some tidbit that can give you 'closure' to that party of your research. I hope this helped a little at least! Good luck on your search!!!

Jen

My name is Michael Oliver & I may be Israel Cantor's great-great-grandson, through his daughter Rosa (Israel> Rosa Cantor > Anna Zwirn > Howard Oliver > Michael Oliver).

Recently, while going through some old family papers, I found 2 certificates of endowed care, issued in 1958, for two plots in the Israel Cantor Family Society at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, NJ (Rt 1). One is for my great-grandfather Herman Zwirn, block 58, row I, grave 1 (Anna's father). Another is for George Zwirn, block 58, row A, grave 4 (not sure how I'm related to him - I have a cousin George who is Anna's grandson so I suspect he was an uncle or brother of my grandmother). Herman's wife was Rosa, which led me here.

I have searched every way I know how to on this site and others and come up with nothing. He would have been about 30 at that time. He may have been a carpenter, and possibly died in 1959.
Cantor, Mary Evelyn in 1929 Richmond, VA yearbook

RE: The Marshallite, 1929 John Marshall High School yearbook (Richmond, VA)

Cantor, Mary Evelyn (Giggles)

This yearbook lists the members of the Senior class of 1929, faculty members, members of the Corps of Cadets, and many members of various clubs (not all). Unfortunately, it does not list the names of the members of the Junior, Sophomore or Freshmen classes (only officers listed for those classes).

I extracted all of the names (& some other information) from the yearbook & have put them on my genealogy web site (total of 13 web pages, containing over 1,900 records; sorted alphabetically by surname).

The link to the first page of these extracts on my web site is:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/family/r...

Or it can be accessed through the "General Research" link on the main page at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

Please note that I put all kinds of genealogy information on my web site, not just data about the families I am researching.
Carla, I suspect you're talking about two separate names. Catoire is a very old French name (back to the 1200s). I've traced the name back to the early 1700s and haven't seen any variations like Cantoir. Good luck!

I'm originally from Louisiana. I've also traced my Catoire lineage back to Antoine Jean Pierre Catoire, who came to New Orleans from Picardy, France in the early 1700's. I've pretty much hit a brick wall at that point; however, I did find a french website with some history on the Catoire name. It is located at http://216.239.35.120/translate_c?hl=en&u=http://catoire...

I'm still searching for parents of Antoine.

There is a remarkable coincidence of names as if it were family tradition. I can't see any clear connection though.
Moss might be short for Maurice but the dates don't quite agree. A copy of my family tree also mentions an Alex Fernandes (born 1893) descended from Mary Cantor through her daughter Kate Hart (my grandmothers's sister born 1869) who married Isaac Percy Fernandes 1892. He went to USA at age 25. There was also a son of Esther (Lizzy) Cantor who married a S.Davis and emigrated to USA.
He has sent me a portion of a family tree listing the same names as you have given in your last posting in response to mine. There seems to be a very remote connection with my family but a startling similarity with yours. Apparently he is not on the Internet and was unaware of your postings but he is visiting USA very soon and would like to contact you directly.

My Email address is brian@guarlfrd.demon.co.uk

Nancy Cantor

Searching for family of Nancy Cantor b ca 1730 in PA. She marr Seorge Storey, Sr. and they moved to Augusta Co VA about 1750. Later moved to Union Co SC where George built first a store, then a fort called Storey's Fort that was used in the French Indian War. He was also a hero of the American Revolution and is in DAR and SAR records. He had a brother named James in SC with him. Nancy Cantor is one of the most difficult names I've encountered. Both were buried at a cemetery at the ruins of the old Fort and have about 10,000 descendants a couple of whom are famous.

Hello, I am awfully sorry I cannot help you with Canters. It is sort of a dead end for myself as well as others. I don't know where you live but there is a book on Charleston SC Jewish people that might help you. Mine were in that area, and also in early ca 1780 GA through which Nancy Canter Storey's descendents passed through on their way to Coweta Co GA. I also found a Canter family in Haywood Co NC, but they seem to be Presbyterians today and they said nothing about how they got their name. My husband Luis Mario Flores Bruzulovsky (a.k.a. Brazlov)'s Mother came from the Russian Ukraine in 1919-1920 Corpus Christi TX and Monterrey Mexico when the quotas were full. I'll keep you in mind for Canter information. Thank you for answering.
Henry CANTOR was born to Abraham and Phoebe CANTOR in 1828. He immigrated to NY before 1851, but I don't know if he came with his parents and siblings. According to the 1841 census, Abraham and Phoebe also had Katherine (15), Rosetta(15), Jacob(14), Moss(9), Alice(11), Elizabeth(5), Mary(2) and Hyam(5 mos). There seem to be name similarities to your Cantors. I have not researched this line farther back but am assuming that they are cousins to my Lewis and Agnes CANTOR line.
