Re: Capels, Caples, Caplices of Quebec Canada

Hello Joanne,
I am intrigued by your post. I am finding that "my" Capels people have some relationship with Canada, but I'm not entirely clear yet on circumstances. My grandfather, Lester Capels, for example, served in the Canadian Army in the early 1900s, during which time he met and married the Scottish immigrant who would become my grandmother.

I'm working on a Web page to try to sort this out:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~capels/capels/index...

I was doubly intrigued by your VermontMaiden e-mail address, because I am in Waitsfield, VT. There were/are Caples in Vermont, but I've not yet researched them for any possible connection.

--Valerie Capels
Capels, Caples, Caplices of Quebec Canada

Looking for any information on Annie Capels, who married Edward Page. They lived in Quebec around S. Stukely. Doing a 1881 census search, I found living as a neighbor Catherine Capels. At this time, Annie was about 26 and already married and I am assuming Catherine might have been her mother. It lists Catherine as widowed with 5 children still at home. Annie was Irish and the census lists Catherine as Irish also. Annie was my maternal great grandmother. Please email me at VermontMaiden@juno.com thank you.

Capels, Findlay, Easton, Carroll?

Looking for ancestors relatives of Lester Henry CAPELS (b. ? d.?), of Syracuse, NY. Lester, one of 12 children of Loren John Capels (b. abt. 1861, from Ireland? d. 1929, Syracuse, NY) and Mary Agnes Carroll (b. 1864 from Ireland, d. 1935), married Elizabeth EASTON FINDLAY (b. 2/25/1893 of Cumberanauld Co. Scotland, d. 9/1986 Syracuse NY) May 3, 1916 in Toronto, Canada. They had 7 children, of which my father, Frederick James of Syracuse, NY (b. 1925 d. 1988) was one. Looking for ancestors as far back as I can go. Thanks!

Capels forum update

According to the 1870, 1880, 1900 NY censuses, I found that Loren (b. 1862 d. 1929) Mary (b. 1864 d. 1935) were not from Ireland, but were born in Syracuse. Mary's parents appear to have been from Ireland, but I don't know yet from where. Loren's parents, Lester (b. abt. 1837) Eliza (b. abt. 1836) were born in New York. I don't now yet where Lester's father William (b. abt. 1807) is from. In the 1870 census (name spelled CAPPELS, a Lorenzo CAPPELS is listed in the household, aged 30, along with an 8-yr old Lorenzo. In the 1880 Loren CAPELS is listed at age 19 (name evidently shortened from Lorenzo), along with parents Lester (age 43) and Eliza (44), a brother George, aged 17 (where was George in 1870?), and Lester's father, William (aged 73).
I found that a Lorenzo CAPLES enlisted in Syracuse in the Civil War at age 19 in 1864. He died in Syracuse at age 63 in 1906 leaving a wife, Hannah.
