Hi All,

It would be interesting to meet everyone for a family reunion. At the moment I am stationed outside the U.S. with the U.S. military, but hope to return home in a couple of years.
Vinita, it looks like we have run into each other on another genealogy page. Thank you for the information that you sent. I am going in so many different directions with this research that I really need to focus on just one line.
This is how I am related to the Capers family:

George Sinclaire Capers (1755 - 1810)

is your 6th great grandfather

Col. William Hickson Capers (1785 - 1839)

Son of George Sinclaire

Caleb Gabriel Capers (1817 - 1884)

Son of Col. William Hickson

Ruth A. Capers (1854 - 1920)

Daughter of Caleb Gabriel

Annie Belle Warren (1878 - 1909)

Daughter of Ruth A.

Alpha Ayres (1899 - 1980)

Daughter of Annie Belle

Hi Disele,

I am way behind on responding to your query, since I just found time to start researching all sides of my family tree. I am the g-g-g-grandson of Ruth A. Capers, who married John A. Warren on 23 December 1875 in Walker County, Texas. She was the daughter of Caleb G. Capers, who is listed with his family in Asumption Parish, Louisiana on the 1860 U.S. Census. The following were the family members of Caleb G. Capers on that census:
Caleb G. Capers, 42 years, Schoolmaster
Ruth A. Capers, 32 years
Elizabeth A. Capers, 15 years
Mary E. Capers, 14 years
Esther B. Capers, 12 years
Caleb G. Capers, Jr., 7 years
Ruth A. Capers, 5 years (my g-g-g-grandmother)
John B. Capers, 1 year (I assume B. stands for Beasley-see below)
Esther A. Beasley, 37 years (unknown relation, assumed Ruth's sister)
Eraster ? (name unreadable), 54 years, unknown relationship

Caleb G. Capers, Sr's place of birth is shown as South Carolina, the rest show Louisiana. The 1870 U.S. census shows the Capers family in Corsicana, Texas, with Caleb now working as a farmer. Ruth A. Capers (the elder) is not shown on the 1870 census. Elizabeth A. Capers, their oldest child, is the next person shown. There were two males born among the six siblings, which may explain the scarcity of the name. I have a relative who I just had the honor of meeting, who has a vast amount of information on the Capers family. I will pass this on to her so that she may share more information with you.

From the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper
1861:

• "UNFORTUNATE CASUALTY. -- Mr. J.C. Capers, of this county(Mobile County), while riding near Bayou la Batre last Friday accidentally dropped a gun which he was carrying. The gun went off as it struck the ground, and the charge struck Mr. Capers under the chin, ranging upwards, and killing him instantly."

Not my line, just sharing.

I am also a Texas Capers although not this line until way back to Richard Capers born in 1734! But I love Capers puzzles--much more than housework!
Your Ruth was the daughter of William Thedotus (spelling varies) Capers Jr. born June 3, 1895 in Sumter Co SC and Ruth Morgan born Oct 28, 1904 in Texas. Ruth died a few days after giving birth to her daughter Ruth Bryan Capers on Mar 5, 1922. She was only 17. You can find her death certificate on the Family Seach website under the name Mrs. W. T. Capers Jr.. Her parents on the death certificate are shown as J. A. Morton born in KY and Beulah Turner born in AL. Her father was James Morgan born Jan 23, 1871 in Hartford Co KY and died Feb 22, 1957 in Dallas, Dallas Co TX--you can also find his death certifcate on the Family Search website. It lists his parents as John T. Morton and Emma Austin both born in KY. James and his wife Beulah along with dtr Ruth are found in the 1910 Census for Howard Co MO, Franklin Twp, district 81, 723. I was unable to find out when Beulah died.
In the 1930 Census William Jr. was working as an Episcopal minister in Okmulgee OK, was married to Doris age 30 who was born in England, and had a son William T. III age 1 and born in TX.
William T. Capers Jr. died July 16, 1954 in Tyron, Polk Co NC
I am the granddaughter of Stuart Ashby Capers. He always said his father died when he about 5 years old. The info I have on Sosthene's father is that his name was Volso Capers, I did not know the M. name. He lived in later years in Texas, possibly Jackson County. A family story is that after Sosthene's death Abi took the children to visit Volso. He wanted her to leave the daughter with him. She refused and probably never had further contact. She considered him a dreadful person. Abi later remarried to a Mr. McIntosh, was widowed, moved to Dallas and ran a boarding house. She had at least one son, Roger McIntosh. He did not marry until late middle-age, lived with and cared for his mother until her death. I grew up in Dallas and remember visiting Abi many times. I was about 8 years old when she died.

This may muddy the situation, but according to "Capers Connections" (Ellison Capers IV): "Anne Capers(b. 1720) married Joshua Morgan (in 1739) gave birth to second daughter Susannah (b 1742). Susannah married Richard Capers on April 28, 1763. Richard was the only surviving son of Joseph Ellicott Capers. Richard & Susannah lived on "Little Ogeechee" near Savannah, Ga. One known son of Richard & Susannah was Morgan Capers who died in Savannah on Feb 18, 1818...According to St. Helena Parish church records, Richard Capers died and was buried on Oct. 20, 1854 at age 74.

I am searching for info on a Richard Capers of SC that married a Susannah last name unknown possibly McLaughlin. in 1788 a James M Stuart is trustee of a Susannah wife of Richard Capers. Oddly James M stands for James McLaughlin Stuart and James's mother was also named Susannah. Wondering if Susannah McLaughlin first married Richard Capers and then married James McLaughlin Stuart Sr.

Any clues greatly appreciated.

Hi,
On my father's side of the family I'm related to Richard Capers through Wm Hixon Capers and Elizabeth Lenoir.

A few years ago I connected with Vinita Shaw and we got to meet each other when I visited my sister in San Antonio. We met in a restaurant and, although we'd never seen photos of each other, we recognized each other immediately. The resemblance was amazing. She looked more like a sister to me that my own sister did!

I live in the Pacific NW so haven't been to the south to do research, all of it has been online. This week searching for Capers' Civil War Pension applications lead me to the National Archives. I found links to state archives. Some have pictures of actual documents and letters. Georgia has death certificates online, too, so you can see names of parents, and of mortuaries and funeral homes, etc.

I'd love to hear what you have on the Capers.I'm the S. Capers who replied to the Capers reunion above. my email is mykithnkin2@yahoo.com
I am a decendant of Richard Capers. I am related to the Sinclair.

William Hixon Capers was Treasurer of the Confederate States of America. I have a bond bearing his signature.

As a matter of fact, I was searching for a book published on the Capers family when I discovered your query.

My wife and I attended the Capers reunion in 1993 at the Capers House in Charleston. My maternal grandfather was Burnside Capers.

Capers, Lowry, and Brunson

Are you or anyone familiar with the Capers family name in association with either the Lowry or Brunson names? Capers seems to be linked to both families, who started in SC, but moved to Savannah, GA in the mid 1800s. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Sincerely,

Stacey

I am the granddaughter of Frank the son of Thomas and Sarah. She was killed in the 1900 tornado that swept through and was buried under her favorite tree. Just about the time I give up I seem to gather so much information. If you would like to email me it is dastidham@sbcglobal.net.
I live just outside of Springfield, MO. Will get back with you this week-end.
thanks
deeann

Unfortunately, I do not have any details on the Thomas in my family -- just a name. He was the eighth of nine known children. Only the two youngest (he and a sister, Nancy) were born in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana -- the others were born in South Carolina. They were half-siblings to my gr. gr. gr. grandfather (their father, James, had remarried -- we do not have their mother's name)

Much of my information comes from a distant cousin, Gary S. O'Neal, who wrote a book, "The O'Neals of East Baton Rouge Parish" -- his ancestor, Martha Capers, was sister to my gr. gr. gr. grandfather. He may be able to help you.
