My name is Charles Caples. I live in N. Louisiana and am told my great grandparents "Doc and Angie" (along with 11 brothers) came from Mississippi, very suddenly. Some went on to Texas and few went to Missouri. We are mostly short and barrel chested. "Doc" was under 5ft.

I would appreciate knowing any information you have regarding this family. Thank you very much.
Timothy Spruill
Lebanon, New Hampshire

My husband's great-grandfather was a brother to Frances Gifford McManus. His name was James Wesley Gifford. Do you have the name of your gggrandfather? We know him to be Lewis M. Gifford. Do you have any info on this man? No one has been able to trace the line any further backwards than Lewis M. Gifford. We feel sure it is the Tennessee Giffords, but haven't found any proof. I have some info on the brothers and sisters to Frances Gifford if you would like to have it.
Patsy Tomerlin

Hi Jack,
I guess we are cousins. My Great-Grandmother was Frances (Fannie) Gifford who married James Thomas McManus. I know very little about this side of the family (Giffords.) My Mother was named Frances McManus and married my Father, James Breland Spruill. They named me Timothy Frank (in honor of Frances) Spruill. I'd love to know more about the history of this family, their ethnicity, and if they are from a family of Giffords who migrated from New York to Tennessee in the early 1800's. Thanks. tfspruill@gmail.com

Remove the name Richard as the first name of Louis M GIFFORD, born abt 1828 in TN. This is a bad error that needs to stop.
John F. Caples, b. 1832 Ohio to Oregon

Oregon Republican League:

Republican League Register of Oregon, The Register Publishing Company, 1896, page 188.

CAPLES, JOHN F., of Portland, was born in Wayne County, Ohio, January 12, 1832. He lived to manhood in Seneca County, being educated at the Wesleyan University. He read law at Bellefontaine, in the office of Hon. Benjamin Stanton, and was examined for admission to the bar in 1854 by Judge Thurman. He practiced at Findlay, Ohio, and Warsaw, Indiana. After the war, in which he took an active part in organizing regiments, he came to the Pacific coast in 1865, locating at Vancouver. The next year he removed to Portland. He at once became prominent as a practitioner and an active Republican worker. In 1872 he was elected to the legislature. In 1878 he was elected District Attorney and served six years. In 1884 he was the Republican nominee for congress, but was defeated because of party dissensions. In every general election for thirty years he has been on the stump, and has canvassed every section of the state, no man within its borders being personally better known to the Republicans of Oregon. He has always worked for and voted the straight ticket, and has a contempt for bolters. As a general practitioner, and especially as a criminal lawyer, his reputation extends throughout the entire Northwest, where he counts his friends by the thousands. As a public speaker he is forcible and sympathetic, and always inspires his audience with enthusiasm. As a debater he is skillful and eloquent; as a jury advocate he is convincing and successful; as a man he is respected and is worthy of respect.

-Tony Larson

This is a shot in the dark. I am researching the Kentucky Caple family. Rsearchers show Andrew Caple came into Kentucky (married Mary Lacey 1798). He has a son listed as Samuel Caple who disappears after 1821. But I found a land record stating that a Samuel Caple bught 80000 acres in the Huntsville, Alabama area Feb. 12, 1822. Doesw any of this sound familiar. If so please contact me at vkaelin@msn.com.
Thank You, Vikki

He was married to Iteria Caples and they had 6 children. Uncle Monkey died quite some time ago. Aunt Tera and their son Bobby died last year. Their son Charles died in 1986.

My father died in 1983. Bill died in 1988. Courtney died in 1998 or 1999.

I have an address for one of Monkey and Teria's sons if you would be interested in contacting them.
I'm endlessly amazed by the variations this name has taken. Though I've not encountered CAPAL, who's to say it's not another variation? Though born CAPELS, I was told that my father's uncle accepted CAPLES because it was spelled that way on some official document at some point and he accepted it. So all of his descendants are CAPLES. Phonetic spelling surely could have influenced a CAPAL variation. If my KAPLE line really did originate in Palatine Germany, it's possible that a line also migrated to Bohemia during the Palatine migration.

Have you heard of your name being spelled Capal? My gr grandfather was James Capal born in Haverstraw New York in 1885. His parents were Frank Capal and Catherine Mary. Frank might of been born in Bohemia, and Catherine was born in Bohemia or Maryland. I am very stuck on this line. Rumor has it the last name was changed for some reason and I am starting to believe it, because I can't find my grandfather before 1920. On the 1920 census the name was spelled Caple. Any help would be appreciated.

On your web page you mentioned maybe a possible connection with the Smith family. My gr grandfather James Capal born in New York married Anna Smith/ Schmidt born in Kentucky. I found Capal, Schmidt, and Enzweiller families living in Cook County, Chicago. I haven't found a connection just all the families living in the same area. The family is just one big mystery! James Capal finally settled in Campbell county Kentucky.
