Obit. Eleanor Caplin Zaremsky 1914-2012

Eleanor Zaremsky of Beachwood, Ohio, died Thursday, April 26, 2012. She was 97.

Eleanor was born on Sept. 17, 1914 in Cleveland, Ohio the first child of Abraham and Lillian (Levine) Caplin, both immigrants from eastern Europe.
Eleanor graduated from Glenville High School in 1932, and then from Flora Stone Mather College (now part of Case Western Reserve University) in 1936 with a degree in education, and certification to teach both English and French.
In the years that followed, Eleanor was a school teacher, then social worker.
With the onset of WWII, she joined the Red Cross and worked as an occupational therapist at army hospitals for the duration of the war.
After assignments in Cleveland and Dayton at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, she spent the majority of the war years at an army hospital in Staunton, Va.
After the war, she considered moving to New York, but decided that returning to Cleveland and simply traveling would be more economical.
The culmination of her travels was an extended trip to Europe and Israel in 1949.
After a month in Paris and a month in Florence, Eleanor lived in Israel for six months and considered staying. However, the eventual draw of family, friends and familiarity brought her back to Cleveland.

Eleanor’s adventures shifted in 1952 to raising a family in the years ahead after marrying Morris Zaremsky, a best friend’s brother and a downstairs neighbor in her parent’s apartment. Eleanor approached motherhood with the goal of instilling her values of the importance of family and community, and her interests in art, travel and education, in her sons Gary and Mark. Then, Eleanor did the same as a loving grandmother to her six grandchildren. She loved spending time with her family, and in particular visiting Yellow Springs, Ohio to watch her grandchildren perform in YS Kids Playhouse and high school plays for nearly 20 years.

Eleanor was preceded in death by husband Morris Zaremsky, brother Sanford Karon and sister Florence Kastner.
She is survived by sons Gary Zaremsky (Mary Beth Burkholder) of Yellow Springs and Mark Zaremsky (Connie Zaremsky) of Pittsburg, Pa. and grandchildren Matthew (Samantha Ley), Aaron, Adam, Rachel, Hannah and David Zaremsky. She is also survived by her sister Dolores Packer of Cleveland and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial gifts in Eleanor’s name may be made to Na’amat Women, Na’amat USA, Cleveland Council, 14055 Cedar Rd, #300, Cleveland, OH, 44118 .
Gifts may also be made locally to YS Kids Playhouse, PO Box 478, Yellow Springs, OHIO 45387 or www.yskp.org
I am trying to find additional information on Charles Caplin. He was born in England in either 1812 or 1813 probably in Worthing, Sussex. He came to the U.S. and moved to Galveston, TX and married Louisa Page from Long Island, NY, in 1842. Louisa's maiden name may have been Edwards and she was born June 20, 1819. She died May 9, 1903 in Seabrook, TX. I would like any information that anyone has on either Charles of Louisa.

Thank you for contacting me. This information interesting. We don't know a whole lot about that side of my mother's family (her grandmother's side) because none of them came over to the US. I am unable to access any of the public family trees as my subscription has expired.

According to my records/research, Richard did have a family. The information that I have for him is here: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/15027591/person/200824384.
Richard Caplin, merchant seaman b1878, Lewes

Hi there, I have some information about Richard Caplin, b.1878 Lewes, a merchant seaman by profession, who was son of Richard Caplin & Susan Burfoot, so brother of your great grandmother.

My information relates to his wartime experiences. His ship was sunk in the summer of 1940 (he then being aged 62/63)& for some time he was presumed drowned. However he had been taken prisoner and spent the rest of the war as a POW in France and Germany, latterly at the Milag camp for Allied Merchant Seamen. You will see his POW photo at Milag on a couple of the ancestry.co.uk public trees (e.g Caplin / Leaton).

I believe he was married and did have a family - have been trying to make contact with his family/direct descendants, so far without success. Perhaps you are in contact with some of them ?

Feel free to get in touch.
Best regards
Rod Barron

Hi Charlotte,

I was born in London my Grandfather was Edward Caplin born early 1900's my Grandmother was Elizabeth Caplin I believe they both came from South East London but I cant be sure, not sure if we are related but it seems unusual but nice to be in contact with someone of the same name .

From what I was told whether there is any truth in it or not is that my ancestors escaped france during the french revolution and the our family name was in fact Le Chaplain again taking on the english meaning the priest.

The reason for the flight from France apparently was due to their association with the royal family .

Have you any information about your ancestors that may tie us together ?

I wish you luck in your search .

Danny

James and Minnie Caplin, Michigan

I am looking for descendants or fellow-researchers of James and Minnie (or Minna or Mary) Caplin who lived in Ypsilanti MI during late 1800s early 1900s. Their daughters were Grace and Laura and their sons were Richard and John, all born 1890s. James Caplin was born in Canada East 1862. I have inherited photos to share.
