Thanks for the reply, just noticed it today. I'm not online very often so please pardon the delayed response. I'm also a neophyte when it comes to ancestry, but have developed a rudimentary family tree, with the following that may be helpful to you:

Amelia Conner, born 1846 in Fulton County, IL, father was Peter Conner, but I don't have any info on him.
Amelia married George Washington Caplinger, born 1836, Ohio

George & Amelia's son George Delno Caplinger, born 1864 in Lewiston, IL, married Minerva Johnson, born 1865 in Putnam Township, IL.

Also on my father's side from Illinois:
Ruth Swearingen, born 1870 in Cuba, IL, daughter Matha Garber, born 1889 in Lewiston, IL, was my grandmother. My father, Gerald Lavell Caplinger was born 1906 in Cuba, IL.

Hi - Do you know if your Caplingers actually lived in Fulton County, Illinois? In my tree is a Polly Caplinger, listed in the 1860 Fulton County census with the Abraham Thrasher family. Abraham's wife, Delilah, was a Caplinger, and I believe Polly was her mother. Polly does not show up in the 1870 census, so I think she passed away between 1860 and 1870. Any info would be appreciated!

Many Caplingers in the earliest records of Randolph County inlcuding Solomon Chenoweth Caplinger Sr. {8/13/1811-4/1/1891} he was the son of George & Sarah (Collett) Caplinger, a Confederate guide and soldier, he helped one hundred soldiers escape the Federals after battle at Rich Mountain, involved with raiding Beverly three times with Generals Imboden, Hill, and Rosser, in 1849 he was Constable, in 1857 Sheriff, in 1880 County Commissioner, he married first Mary Chenoweth, Children were Calvin L., Laban D., Phoeba C., Sarah E., Martha B., Maryette, married secondly Mary Abigail Ryan, Children: Delia Wilson, Julius, Robert Bruce, Solomon C. Jr., buried Caplinger Cemetery this from the Pioneer Index of Randolph County, sources for material are from Boswell's and Maxwell's on Randolph County. If you are ever in the area check out the Allegheny Regional Family History Center in Elkins (have web site) there is loads on your family - and photos also! Have fun!

Upon looking further into my info I found the Samuel Caplinger who married Mary F. Smith in the 1850 Census of Jefferson County. So now I sorta answered the question to rule out Samuel and Mary F Smith Caplinger as the ones listed in Ripley County, Indiana.

But then back to the same question, if Martha Jane Ryker
died bef. 1832 who is listed in the 1850 Census with Samuel Caplinger age 59 born VA?

The marriage I have listed from a few different sources is that Samuel Caplinger married Jane Ryker Sept 18, 1818 [Not listed as Martha or Mary Ryker] Jefferson County, Indiana. Could there be or is this Mary Jane Ryker.

Looking for Parents of Susannah Caplinger who was born 1825 in Indiana. She married William H. Black Mar 4th 1847 Ripley County, Indiana. Susannah Caplinger was my 3rd Great-Grandmother.

When searching the 1820 Census Index I found a Samuel Caplinger in Jefferson County, [The only Caplinger in that area at the time] who in turn married Martha Jane Ryker Sept 18, 1817 in Jefferson County, Indiana.

I have seen where Martha Jane Ryker died bef. 1832? Does anyone know the documentation of the date?

Also does anyone know the death date of Samuel Caplinger?

There is a Samuel Caplinger listed in the 1850 Census of Ripley County, Indiana; Age 59 Born VA, who I first thought might be the widowed husband of Martha Jane Ryker, who might have been the parents of Susannah Caplinger.

The only other marriage records I have for a Samuel Caplinger in that time frame and area is a Samuel Caplinger married a Mary F. Smith in Jefferson County, Indiana Aug 28, 1844. But in looking at the Census it Could very will be Samuel and Mary F. Smith but there is children listing well before they were married in 1844.

Both Susannah Caplinger and her husband William H. Black are listed in the 1850 Census, Ripley County, Shelby Twp., Indiana. As previously mentioned so is the Samuel & Mary Caplinger. Also in the 1860 Census Ripley County, Johnson Twp., Both Families are still listed in same area together.

I believe Samuel Caplinger died bet. 1860 & 1870 for then his wife Mary Caplinger is listed with Sameul Luds [Lutz, Lutes] and his wife Sarah Frances Caplinger Lutes in the 1870 Census Ripley County. [Mary Caplinger 64 born VA] Samuel Lutes is the brother to my 3rd Great-Grandparents Stephen M. Lutes who married Mary Cline Oct 25, 1833 in Ripley County.

If anyone could shed some light on this subject I would be more than greatful.

You might check out the possibility that your Samuel Caplinger, is the son of Henry and Margaret Caplinger of Kentucky. Henry would have been born about 1750-1760, I am guessing. I have been looking for information about "Solomon" Caplinger, and another researcher directed me to the family of Henry and Margaret and some of their children. I have concluded (perhaps mistakenly-perhaps not) that Samuel (b 1821), and Solomon (b 1823) in Indiana, are brothers. There is also a strong possibility that they married sisters. My research involves the line from Solomon, and in one of the Indiana Census records, (1850, I think), Solomon and wife Nancy (who was a Smith) are listed in the residence of a widow, named Rosanna Smith. "Rosanna" coincidentally is the name of one of your Samuel's daughters. This is not much, granted, but someone helped me find a piece of information, so I am returning the favor by passing it on to you. Maybe it will help you find what you are looking for.

Hi my is Tammy (Caplinger). My great grandfather David A. Caplinger married a Josephine L. Long back in 1902. Josephine was born in 1883 her parents were Alexander and Ella ( Dresbach/ Dresback) Long. I'm pretty sure she was born Twin Twp. Ross Co. Ohio. Her and her husband are buried at Moores Cemetery in Twin Twp Ross Co. Ohio. I'm sure but I think that's where her parents are buried too. Yes I would love to have what ever information you will send me. John William Caplinger's father was John born 1815 in Wood County, and he married 7 Jan 1836 in Wood County one Elizabeth Radcliff. This John's father was John Spencer Caplinger who married 2 April 1807, he died 20 July 1825 in Wood County, his wife was Kathleen (Catharine) Colp.

I descend from Adam CAPLINGER of Highland Co., Ohio; b 1820; d ? I believe that his ancestors were from Rockingham Co., VA due to the number of CAPLINGER's from that area. I have been researching my family history for nearly 40 years and I have not been able to prove which CAPLINGER of southern Ohio was his father. Any help will be most appreciated! His first wife and my line was Mary Ann MILLER. Second wife was Susan CLUFF. There is also a family legend that he brought back an Indian sqaw from a hunting expeidition in Nebraska while he was married to Susan. He built her a cabin deep in the woods of his property. White Cloud was her name and she bore Adam at least four children. When they were old enough to go to public school, they were brought out of the woods and lived at the main house with Susan. It is not known from what tribe White Cloud originated. I would love to hear from anyon from this family!!

his father was Jacob Morton Caplinger. My Grandfathers sibs were Dora birth 10 Oct 1870 MARRIED Alexander Muir 7 Dec. 1896, Richard Harris (Grandpa) b: 14 Feb 1872 Married Katie Thorton 27 Nov 1895, William Edgar b: 6 Jan 1874 Married Olivia A Orr Jun 1896 not sure of day maybe you can provide. Nora Jane, b:19 Dec 1876, Morton Jacob b: 27 Aug 1877 Married Anna Bella Folson 23 Oct 1898 Mary C.b: 18 Jul 1880 Bird C. b: 10 Jul 1884 Married Annie Gray. You found John Wesley Caplinger (b. Jun 1880 - d. 12 Oct 1929), who is my great grandfather! I have him in my tree...he was married to Anna Elizabeth Haines (b. 1882 maybe in Indiana - d. 14 June 1946. She remarried a Hamilton man when John W. Died. I am having trouble with her line...).

About White Cloud...
What a fascinating story. I am glad you are writing this down so that this isn't lost. How sad for White Cloud...once her children were brought to the main house, did she get to see them in the evenings? Or was contact severed? I wonder how it was for her... Perhaps in the Idaho area there is a Native American tribe association thta you can write to to see if they have anything about White Cloud. Native Americans are reportedly great with oral history...perhaps they remember her???

There is tale also in my family of George Swisshelm marrying a woman by the name of Christina Yankee whose parents were both full blooded Shawnee Indians (from VA). I have a family tree from the early 1900s that says this, but I would really love to know the story behind it all.

I spent the night doing a lot of research...

I found four children for Adam with wife #1 (maybe more exist?):

William b. abt 1849
John W. b. abt 1852
Joseph A. b. abt 1858
Margaret

So I doubt he'd have two sons named John. :(

I do notice that there seems to always be a Butler where my John C. and your John W. are concerned.

What is the relation of the Butler family to the Caplingers?

Also...I haven't heard of White Cloud before. Fascinating! Do you have much on her?

Not sure this will help but I am son of Harold Capliner who was son of Richard H Caplinger who was son of Jacob Morton Caplinger who was married to Cordelia Warman 9/11/1864 they had 8 Children whose names are Charles R., Dora, Richard Harris My Grandfather, William E., Nora Jane, Morton Jacob, Mary C. and Bird C. Jacob Morton died 3/26/1907 and is buried in Pleasnat Hill Cemetary near Versailles, Indiana at his death he was living in Milan, Indiana.

If you ever find you descend from Adam CAPLINGER b ca 1820 OH who married 1) Mary Ann MILLER; 2) Susan CLUFF and was the father of children with White Cloud, please contact me! He was probably born in Highland County, Brush Creek Township. He definitely lived his adult life there. I am related to him through his daughter Margaret CAPLINGER (Mother: Mary Ann MILLER). Adam's second wife was a sister to my grandfather, James Henry CLUFF. If you have relatives in Brush Creek Township, we're probably related! I searched for John Wesley CAPLINGER but didn't find anything. The name sounds very familiar. I'll keep a look out for it.

Unfortunately I do not know where Charles was born, or where he and Lucinda were married. My grandmother didn't talk that much about them. I do know my grandmother was born in Rockingham Co., VA in 1909. I don't even know if he had brothers or sisters. Again, I don't remember her talking about any, I even asked my sister. I was told that Lucinda was part Indian, but I don't know which. I know this isn't any help, but it's all I have. I guess I should have asked more questions as a child.

I've got a Williad Caplinger born about 1912 to a John Wesley Caplinger (b. Jun 1880 Brush Creek OH, d. 12 Oct 1929) and Anna Elizabeth Haines (b. 1882, maybe Indiana, d. 14 Jun 1946).

My records show he was likely married to a Grace (no last name known).

Hope the following helps if you have not found anything else. Please note although it says June and not Jane or Olive Jane, and it says Eliza and not Elgiva, that census takers wrote down the names as they heard them, and that sometimes people did not give their first names to the census takers, but gave their middle names instead. I had some ancestors do this, and it made things difficult.

I am trying to find out about an Indiana Deal in the Ripley County, Indiana area. There are a number of Deals marrying in Ripley County in the 1840's and I am wondering if my Indiana Deal is related to your Olive Jane Deal, because your Olive Jane has a daughter named Indiana, and I am wondering if your Olive Jane Deal had a sister named Indiana.

HENRY CAPLINGER was born Abt. 1760, and died 1838 in Shelby Co., Kentucky. He married (1) MARGARET HARPER. He married (2) MARY YOUNGER.

Commoners and Kings by Mrs. Fay R. Corporon.
Margaret Harper may have been daughter of Jacob Harper.
Mary Younger was the second wife of Henry Caplinger.

Henry Caplinger moved to Woodford Co, Ky in 1791 and was on the Shelby county census along with his brother Adam for August 7, 1800.

Henry and Margaret had a son named Adam, b. 29 Nov 1787.

Adam married Sarah F. Herndon and they had sons:
Samuel who married Mary Francis Smith.
Solomon who married Sarah Ann Smith

The wives were the daughters of William Smith and Rosa Anna Whitson

I am researching this family also. My grandmother Helen Mccoy, did leave some handwritten history for us.
John William Caplinger and Rosa Lee Millstead were married October 1, 1880
They had 7 children
Alliva Caplinger born 01/19/1881
George Caplinger born 01/05/1882
Jesse Caplinger born 02/22/1883
Pearl Caplinger born 10/05/1886
Charles Caplinger born 04/23/1894
Clara Caplinger born 06/09/1902
Gordon Caplinger born 10/20/1905.

The only other thing she had listed in the book were John William Caplingers bothers and sisters. no dates were given.
