Hi, I know my family has a De Finis connection also but I don't know how, a distant cousin I think. Maria Valitutti Capozzoli(my father's mother) had many siblings, including a Filomena (the spelling we have) Valitutti but I don't think she is the same as your father's aunt. Certain names seem to be repeated over and over, making things even more complicated. I know you and I are related, I just don't know how, yet! :- )

I know that my Dad told us that Louie, Mickey, and Babe (their sister) were his 1st cousins. I need to ask my brothers and cousins about some of these ties. There are some of the Valittutti's who live in FL, I can reach out to them too. There was also a story about 2 Capazzoli brothers who married 2 Valitutti sisters, I think my brother Gene knows about it. Plus, one of my Dad's other 1st cousins (who was also Raffaele Longo) and was from Bellosguardo, his father was Federico Longo (my grandfather's brother) and his mother was Maria Grazia Vallitutti. My Dad had another Aunt (Philomena) who was from Bellosguardo. Her married name was De Finis, but she was also connected to to Longo's, Capazzoli's and Valitutti's. There are several connections here. I also talk to some of the family who are still in Bellosguardo and can see if they know anything.

Glad to hear from you! I am not sure I understand the connection between us. How was your grandmother Angelina Pepe related to Petronilla (there may be other ways to spell this name) Pepe, who was my great-grandmother? Her husband was Pietrangelo Valitutti, who brought their adult children to America two by two to be married while Petronilla stayed behind in Bellosguardo. My father (Carmen aka C.J. aka"Babe" Capozzoli) spoke often of the Longos but I don't think I remember him saying they were his cousins.

My grandparents (Peppino/Giuseppe Longo & Angelina Pepe) were both from Bellosguardo and immigrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. My Grandfather aka Joseph Longo was a 1st cousin of the Capozzoli's in Pittsburgh and Washington DC (Mickey, Angelo, Babe...). We owned a food market called Longo's in the East Liberty section of Pittsburgh behind old Pittsburgh Hospital.

Re: Capozzoli's-correction

Here is a correction from my brother Gene: Bob –
Angelo and Mickey were DeFinis’ – they were Pete and Patricia’s brothers (Betty’s in-laws). My understanding from Pat is two Valatutti sisters married two Cappazoli brothers. When I asked Pat how we are related last Christmas she said her mother and Grandma Longo were cousins. BTW – when Rosie Cappazoli died about 3 years ago – Pat had taken care of her – and she had no immediate family (I think Pat was her first cousin) – Pat inherited her estate including her house in Penn Hills where Pat lives today.
Gene

So--there was both an Angelo Capozzoli and an Angelo DeFinis (1st cousin). I now remember that Angelo and Louis Capozzoli also had a sister they called "Babe".

The Pittsburgh Capozzoli's were my Dad and Uncles--Ralph, Raleigh
(Aurelio), Joseph Longo--cousins. Both of my grandparents--Joseph (Peppino) & Anjoilina Pepe--were from the same town in Italy as the Cappozzoli's. My Grandfather, Dad and Uncle Raleigh owned Longo's Market in East Liberty and grew up in the same neighborhood as the Cappozoli's. As as kid I remember Louie, Angelo and Mickey Cappozoli. Angelo & Micky had a restaurant in Washington DC and was known in the Beltway political breakfast circuit as, "The Omelet King". My brother Tom (manages the Giant Eagle in Butler, PA) may remember more details about your family, as he always worked in the family business and co-owned our 2nd store in the North Hills. My Dad had an Aunt in the neighborhood who was very close to the Cappozoli's, Her name was Zia Philomena DeFinis. I believe her maiden name was Valitutti (also a Bellosguardo family). I believe her Mother was a Longo and the Valitutti's were related to the Cappozoli's. Her daughter Patricia (a former nun) is still alive and lives in Pittsburgh. My brother Gene stays in touch with Pat and she may know more details. I met Mickie's sister (since past away) and her son Michael several years ago at a funeral home in Pittsburgh and Michael was in the restaurant business. Patricia's Sister-in-law, Betty DeFinis (Peter Sr. wife) worked part-time in the DC business after her husband died. There are also some Valitutti's (now living in Florida) who may know some of the Cappozoli connections. My cousin John Longo (Uncle Raleigh's son) stays in touch with them. My email is: longo.bob@gmail.com. Ciao.

My mother in law Rose (Capozzoli) Perrone b 1928 and her sister Josephine b 1931 were born to Ralph Capozzli b 1897 and Angelina (Siconolfi). Unfortuntely we have no information about Ralph's familiy since his father died when he was 6 years old. Ralph had a sister Angelina and their mother's name was Rosa, she later remarried a man named Vito Montemarano.
If you have any infomation about this family please contact me.
Thanks.

My Nonno was Antonio Capozzoli and captured by the British Army in World War II and taken to Britain as a POW. The family home in Italy was Aquara near Salerno - I have been many times.

It would be good to see if there is any family connection with our name in the United States!

Marco

Why do you think you are part of our branch of the family? I would love to hear what you know of our family. Luigi Capozzoli came to the United States in 1901 and his wife, and children came in 1903. They ultimately had 10 children total. Luigi's sister was in the U.S. already. According to stories, no more could come into the U.S. because of quotas so the other half of the Capozzoli family related to Luigi went to S. America. Thanks for responding. My website is growing...capozzoliancestry.com
Linda

Dear Mary: I'm Susan Capozzoli, wife of Robert who is the son of Anthony Thomas Capozzoli and Mary Ladeda Capozzoli. You've heard from our two children, Anthony and Andrea. Bob and I still live in Pittsburgh. Anthony has two children, Vanessa Marie (13) and Anthony, Jr. (3-1/2). Bob's brother, Michael still lives in Pittsurgh as does his son Michael and his wife Lisa and two sons William and Robert; another son on the way. Michael's other son, Robert, lives in Chalfont near Philadelphia and has two daughters, Sidne and Sarah. Bob's sister, Marianne Buriak, lives in Houston and his brother Ron lives in Chicago. A lot of names for you; all descendents of your dad's brother Anthony (Cappy). I met your father when he made a trip to Pittsburgh. I can't recall the occasion, but I remember meeting him. I think it's great that you try to gather all this family information and stay in touch with your relatives. Who knows, one day we might meet. If I'm correct, I think you're in New Jersey. Andrea is a musician who lives in Boston but frequently performs in New York. Maybe we could meet there some day.
Susan Reese Capozzoli

I am putting together a website giving all the Capozzoli family history known for our branch of the family. It goes back to the 1700's in Italy (Castel San Lorenzo and Aquara) Our story began with Luigi Capozzoli and Maddalena Peduto. They married and came to America in 1902. They had 10 children, most of whom lived into their 90s. My father's cousin did extensive research, made many trips, talked to everyone, and wrote it all down. Our family tree is quite large and we know a lot going way back. I just started the site but for those looking at their own history their may be some names and dates that coincide. It is www.louiscapozzoli.wordpress.com I am still working on it but please read all the pages. My father was very dedicated to the Capozzoli story so page one is a tribute to him. There are entries about Chicago, Pittsburgh, Boston and Buenos Aires families.

My name is Linda Capozzoli Herbst. The picture you describe is of my father and sister, Barbara, when she was a little girl. We have this photo but it is incredible that you have this! My father was Louis A. Capozzoli. He was a Marine, stationed in Jacksonville when my sister was a baby. That is where she was born. My father passed away in 2004. We had an 80th birthday party for him where many of his old Marine buddies came for him. He was in Combat Correspondence and stayed connected with his friends. I will tell my sister your father's name and see if she remembers. My email is lindaherbst@gmail.com Daddy put together a wonderful series of photo albums. I will see if your father is in it. Thanks for asking. This is really touching. Linda

I was cleaning out some old pictures and came across one with a man and a toddler on a military trunk with the following writton on the trunk "Jacksonville San Diego Sgt. L. A. Capozzoli. And down in the left hand corner of the trunk the Marine logo. When I was growing up I had heard the name and probably even had met this man. I don't remember. But, I was wondering if there was anyone still alive that would remember this picture and would want it? My father William R. Neuburger Jr. was in the marines with Sgt Capozzollil. My father past away in 1999 and I know he would want me to pass this picture on to the right family. Thanks, Joyce (Neuburger) Burks

Capozzoli's

I enjoyed reading some of the thread about the Capozzoli's in Pittsburgh. I am 56 years old and remember---Louie, Mickey and Babe as a kid. My dad (Ralph) and my Uncle (Raleigh/Aurelio) had a store in East Liberty called Longo's Market and Louie was always in and out. I may have met some of the folks here a few years ago when Betty Definis passed away. Her husband Pete was also a cousin and they were close to some of the Capozzoli's. I actually remember when Louie won the car that that the Pirates raffled off at the end of the baseball season. I have been searching for connections to my grandparents, Giuseppe Longo and Angelina Pepe. Pepe and Longo are still the two most popular surnames in Bellosguardo. We are also related to the Tesauro's (Detroit), my grandfrather's sister was Clara Longo Tesauro and several other of the surnames common in Bellosguardo. My grandmother Angelina Pepe had a sister Mary who had at least 3 kids Mario, Mary and Bert Ruggieri. She also had a brother who did not come to America by the name of Gerardo. We believe that her father was also Gerardo. Our grandfather Guiesppe Longo had a brother named Aurelio which is also one of my
Dad's brothers names. We had heard that his Grandfather Longo was named Ralph/Rafaelo. Any connections would be appreciated. Thx.

Hi, Andrea.

My niece is also named Andrea. Is your grandfather Anthony T. Capozzoli, 1909-1989, who married Mary Ladeda? (Or something like that--I was never sure of the spelling!) Anthony's children are named Robert, Ronny, Michael William and Marianne, and Robert has two children, Anthony Robert and Andrea Joan--is that you? Is your mom named Susan?

This is pretty exciting. I would love to get birth dates for your brother and you, and your mom, also your uncles and aunt. What was your mother's maiden name? Any information you can send me would be appreciated.

Do you live in Pittsburgh? I have lived all my life in New Jersey and visited Pittsburgh only once, when I was about three, although my two brothers have gone back, once when our Uncle Louie died. I was born in 1946, my brother Mike in 1947 and my brother Pete in 1948. (We're old!)

Hoping to hear from you!
Mary

My Grandfather was Lucido Capozzoli who married Alexis (Alice) Duffy. He come to the USA on April 12, 1881 at the age of 28 and lived in Medford Ma. from Italy. He had many children. My Mother Flora Hope Rooney was the baby of his children. She dies at the age of 82 yr. in 1990. She always talked about her cousin Luke in Medford, Ma. He was very good to her Mother. The other daughters names were Mary Volpe, Sara (Saddie) Marino, Lydia (Pomer), Rose Capozzoli and my mother Flora Rooney. I know there were son's but only heard one name mentioned and that was Nicholas. I wonder if we are related ?? I live in Braintree, Ma. and I am Flora's youngest child of 3. I have a sister Marsha and a brother Johnny who passed away in 1965 from a car accident. That I think was the last time my Mother saw Luke her cousin.

Capozzolis from Belosguardo

Hi. I "met" some of my Capozzoli cousins on this message board back in 2003, including Michael Anthony, who was just about to be married in December of 2003 and was planning to visit our family's ancestral village, Belosguardo, on his honeymoon. When I tried to contact him later, I was unable to get through; maybe his email address had changed. In the meantime, my email address also changed and I got a new computer and did not transfer my old address book to the new computer. So, I would like to re-establish contact with him and meet any other cousins who are related to me. I am especially interested in anyone who has been to Belosguardo and would not mind emailing me some photos of the town. My grandfather was Michael Capozzoli and my grandmother was Maria Valitutti. Thanks for any help.

Hi, I'm Michael Paul Capozzoli. Let me be the first Capozzoli to welcome you. I think most of us Capozzoli's here are descended from Mary's grandparents and my great-great grandparents from Belosquardo. My dad (Mike Ralph Capozzoli) is from Pittsburgh, and his father (Michael M. Capozzoli) is from there also. I'm darned sure Mary Palmer (below post) is my grandpa's cousin, because my grandpa's uncles were all the same names as she listed.

Anyway, I guess you're part of my, and our, family tree. I can't answer much about our family tree, but let me check some more of my personal info here and I'll get back to you soon.

Hi, Susan.
I read your post a couple of days before Christmas but can't remember if I ever answered you, I was so busy right before the holiday! I'm very happy to hear from you and have added what information you gave me to my Family Tree program. You did not give me your maiden name or dates of birth for yourself, your husband (my first cousin) and your children. I also don't have your wedding date or occupations. If you don't mind having this information in my family tree, send it to me please when you have time. You can email me directly if you don't want to post a message to the board. I don't know too much about the family, but my father Carmen ("Babe") wrote his life story and included reminiscences about his brothers and growing up in Pittsburgh, so if you have any questions you think I might be able to answer, please just ask.
Mary (Capozzoli) Palmer

Hello, John.
Thanks so much for replying to my message. I am guessing that my grandfather Michael Capozzoli and your wife's grandfather with the same name were cousins of some kind, but I can't say for sure. My grandfather was born in 1866, some 30 years before your wife's grandfather. was born. My great-grandfather's name was Antonio. I'm sorry that your wife and I don't turn out to be closely related, but it is pretty exciting finding someone else with my maiden name!
Again, thanks.
Mary (Capozzoli) Palmer
in New Jersey

Hi, Anthony! Yes, "Babe" was my father. He died in 1988. He married Christina O'Connor of Asbury Park--he met her when he was stationed there during WWII--and he had 3 kids, me (b. 1946), Mike (b. 1947) and Pete (b. 1948). It's great to "meet" you, even if it is via email. I have a little genealogy data about the family but not sure if it is accurate. Your father Michael is the son of Anthony, right? I have no info on your father, when he was born, who he married, his children's names. I would love to have that information for my "family tree." According to my information, your father had two brothers, Robert and Ronny, and a sister Mary. Is that right? I would love to have information about them too. Please write me directly at my email address: mpalmer1065@earthlink.net
Mary

My name is Michael Anthony Capozzoli, Son of Anthony Capozzoli who was the son of Michael Capozzoli...who is my great, great grandfather. Most of the family still resides in Pittsburgh whereas my brother Robert and I live outside of Philadelphia (supposedly where Grandfather Capozzoli landed when he left Belosguardo). Sadly, all of the Capozzoli brothers have passed away. My grandfather died in 1989, uncle Louis died in 1985 (his twin died when he was a child) and I really don't remember the rest of that crazy bunch I have attached a photo of myself and my fiance. I honestly think that we may be related! Feel free to e-mail me at any time.

I too have Capozzoli's that came to Massachusetts. Rose Capozzoli came in 1907 into Boston from Naples. Her brother, Celidoro (Jerry) Capozzoli came through Ellis Island in 1902 with Rose's husband, Nicolas DiMatteo. They resided in the Marlboro and Stoughton, Massachusetts area.

Capozzoli relatives?

My grandfather Michael Capozzoli, born November 16, 1866 in Belosguardo, Italy, came to U.S. in 1893 and settled in Pittsburgh, PA. He married Maria Valitutti and had children named Anthony, Peter, Carmen, Ralph, John, Louis and Samuel. His brother Carmine Capozzoli, born July 16, 1879, also came to the U.S. and married Josephine Valitutti (Maria's sister); their children were named Anthony, Peter, Michael and Rose. I am interested in finding any relatives.

Good possibility, from the story we were told, great grandma arrived in Boston in the early 1920's.She stayed with family until her future husband came from NY for her. They were married in 1921,so we are guessing she was in Boston late 1920,early 1921. The names on her marriage certificate as witnesses are Saul Vertullo and Virginia Vairo(Voiro). Since she always insisted that your family should stand as your witness at weddings we are thinking that Virginia may have gone to NY from Boston for the wedding. Any of these names mean anything?
