We found tucked in a family bible with other odds and ends a monthly statement from A. Cappel in Dayton, OH dated August 15, 1895. The bill was addressed to J. D. LESLIE and was for a total of $30.05. The bible belonged to our grandfather, John D. LESLIE and his wife, Mary Lula RABORN Leslie who lived in Union Springs, Bullock Co., AL and later Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL. A kind researcher in Dayton looked in the City Directories and determined that A. CAPPEL manufactured umbrellas and parasols. The 1897 Dayton directory gave Mrs. Louise E. CAPPEL but doesn't mention A. Cappel, so he may have been deceased by then.
Does anyone know of any possible connection between CAPPEL, LESLIE, or RABORN in the 1890's, or was this statement perhaps for a mail order? If anyone is related to this family and would like, I will scan a copy of the bill, which has a trademarked logo of a large "C" with a smaller "A" in the center, a walking stick across the middle and a large opened umbrella over it.
