Is it possible that this James Capper who married in 1823 in UK was then convicted in Chester for stealing changed his identy to James Broomhall to ? protect family and was transported to Tasmania 1824. He wold have been young early 20's at the most. He never returned to UK living out his life in Australia. He revealed at the time of his marriage his real name being James Capper and his mother was still living in Chester.

My Gr Gr Grandfather James Broomhall was born in Wrexham Nth Wales in 1803. He was convicted in Chester and transported to Tasmania in 1825 where he lived out the remainder of his life, and honest free man. At the time of his marriage he revealed his real name was James Capper and that his mother still lived in Chester. Could he be linked to this James Capper of Chester.

My Grandfather Thomas Frank Capper Elliott was sent too NZ at the age of 16 (or thereabouts). He was the son of Mary Elizabeth Capper and William Jeffrey Eliott. We hold in trust photos of her family including Cawthorne Capper as well as his two sisters Jessie and Mary and brothers, George and Harry (twins), Edward and Cawthorne, which we would be happy to share. We are particularly interested in Cawthorne as we believe that he visited NZ as well.

The Cawthorne Jasper Capper in Nottingham is my uncle - we have his portrait on our wall here in New Zealand. He was born in 1844. His grand parents were Jasper Capper, who married Margaret Cawthorne, 20 September 1809. The family were london drapers and wool merchants. I believe the Cawthorne Capper who is buried in Macao is his (and therefore my) uncle. There was a much earlier marriage between a Mary Cawthorne and a John Capper (about 1710). I don't know if they are related.

Hi, I just came across your messages re "Sarah Capper...Portsea". I am researching the Capper name specifically Sophia Eleanor Capper who was a sister of Charles H.P. Capper of Portsea (1881 Census gives an address of 51 West Street, Portsea, listing his wife as Louisa S. Capper, and his chlidren as: James C.S., Henry J., Louisa E., Eleanor A., and Jessie E.) Sophia lived at the same location.
Are any of these names related to your Cappers? More information is listed on the UPFIELD Message Board

Richard Upfield
(please contact me at: rcupfield@rogers.com)

George was the son of William Capper & Martha Davis. William was the son of Martin Capper.
Thanks Colin for the information. I think there could be a connection, as you say it is a very unusual name. His father was Henry Capper, Grandfather Samuel Capperand thats about as far as I have got. I did find a Cawthorne Jasper Capper in Nottingham in 1860's but I haven't been able to connect the two yet.
My Cawthorne was known as Dick he served in the Canadian Army during WW1 and was injured. He never married, and is buried in Canada.
Any info would be gratefully received

Barbara
