Here is some more info to add to your story about Francis Ferguson.

Francis M. Ferguson enlisted as a Private in A Company, 1st Infantry Batallion, CSA. That unit was composed of men from Smithville and DeKalb Co. He was captured while on leave at home, escaped, captured again with wounds, and sent to Camp Mortan, Indiana, after being captured at Donelson. He was in a Union Hospital in Camp Mortan when he died in 1862 from his wounds. .After he died, Sarah and George lived with their grandfather, Luke. Nancy lived with a relative, Thomas McDowell, in Dekalb Co.. Their mother worked as a servant in the Burgess Wamack family in Warren Co., over 100 miles away. Lorenzo was working as a farm hand for a relative, Abraham Cantrell, in Dekalb County.
FYI - Burial site for Florence Capshaw

My Grandfather was Emmett Lon Capshaw Sr. My father Emmett Lon Capshaw Jr. and my mother Audrey L. Capshaw attended Florence's funeral shortly after their marriage in 1946. Mom admits that it was long a time ago but she swears Florence is buried in McCrory, Woodruff, AR and there was definitely Headstones in place at that time.

Linda,

Thanks for your reply.

I would love a detailed list of the children because you said there was 11 and I only have nine. Plus I have nothing on your Virginia.
Also I have some pictures I could e-mail you. Note my scanner is not working to well, but it is better than nothing.
Actually I think I have a picture of Josiah and Dora and family, I know I have one of your mother Virginia when she was a little girl.

My e-mail is j.sammie1997@yahoo.com

I have talked to Jerry Capshaw through e-mail but not to much.

joy

Joy,
Thanks for commenting. I got my information off an old document I found of my mother's. It listed Joseph Capshaw and Rebekah White and Clement Henry Taphorn and Emily Louise Furguson but no dates. I've been in contact with Jerry Capshaw and he seems to have some extensive information but some of his was inaccurate concerning my mother's family. My mother was Virginia Capshaw, the youngest of 11 of Josiah and Dora's children. Sadly, my mother and all her siblings are gone now and I met few of them.

Linda,
Your Josiah McDonald Capshaw and my Louisa Capshaw were brother and sister. Louisa married James J. Knowles.
It looks like your are saying the parents of Joisah and Louisa were Joseph Capshaw and Rebekah, I am sorry that is not true.
First list the children.
Capshaw,
Louisa 1860 to unknown about 1890?
Joseph 1862-1927
John or Johnnie 1865 to unknown
Sarah 1868 to after 1930
Aminda "Kansas" Sept 1870 to after 1920
Susanna Dec 1879 to unknown
Rebecca ? she died on the move from TN to Ark maybe

The parents of these children are
John Isaac CAPSHAW Birth: abt 1838, Warren, TN Death: after 1900, Royal Arkansas
Emily Louise FERGUSON Birth: 1-Jan-1843, TN Death: after 1900, Arkansas Buried at Manford, Arkansas
Married: 25-Feb-1859, De Kalb Co., TN

Father of John Isaac Capshaw I think is:
William S. CAPSHAW
Birth: 1803 in Rutherford County, NC
Death: after 1870

I do not have a complete list for your side of Josiah and Dora.
Also just to let you know John had a brother Josiah born abt Birth: 11-Oct-1835 in Warren County, TN probably that is where your Josiah got his name.

Also I have some pictures if you give me your e-mail address or you can e-mail me at j.sammie1997@yahoo.com

joy
John and Louise traveled to Arkansas (Hot Springs area I think) and settled there with their family. Their daugher Louisa Capshaw married James Knowles in Arkansas. James and Louisa had Byron Knowles which was my grandfather. I think the Knowles and the Capshaw's traveled by wagon train together from Tennessee.

joy

Joy:
Don't know how you got two census reports showing my great grandfather---not doubting you, but, I've never run across this conflict. The father of this ONE person is David Granville Capshaw, Jr.--his father is listed only as David, not David Granville.

From the Robert David Capshaw Bible flyleaf:
Annie Inez b. 1873
Benjamin b. 1875
Preston David b. 1878
Oscar Wylie b. 1880 d. 1882
Emmett Lonnie b. 1883
Oscar Wylie b. 1886 d. 1961 (yes, there were two)
Gideon Walker b. 1888
Ida Lou b. 1892
Granville David b. 1898
Walter b. 1898 d. 1898

Walter and Granville David were twins. Walter died as an infant. Oscar W. born 11/27/1880, and died 10/05/1882 was Oscar Wylie also.

Robert David and Florence are buried in unmarked graves in Woodman Cemetery, DeView,Woodruff, AR, which is about one mile south of McCrory, AR. (In 1997, I attempted to locate the grave sites, but was unable to do so. The cemetery records are inaccurate.

Arkansas Confederate Pension Index, A-G shows Capshaw, Robert David
Index of Arkansas Pensioners shows that Florence filed a claim (#29916) for Civil War Pension Benefits after Robert's death.

A probable burial location was located. If it can be confirmed, we, members of the family, will place a long overdue marker on the grave.

If you are interested in more, I am listed in the Heber Springs, AR phone book. Call me and we can establish a direct email link. I hate these boards on Ancestry.

I am interested in your link to or interest in the Capshaw
Family.

Jerry Capshaw
Information posted in g164 or cag164, attributed to jcapshaw with a magicnet email address is corrupted!!!. I am not sure how this happened, but a lot of data is cross linked with children being attributed to the wrong parents, husbands being married to the wrong wives, etc. This info appears on RootsWeb and on Ancestry.Com. I have requested that both those files be removed, but GUESS WHAT???? Neither RootsWeb or Ancestry have done so, after several weeks of wrangling with both. Use this data with extreme caution. Now pay close attention children!!! The data on my personal website was also corrupted. Now, how do you reckon that happened??? I have taken it down. Use any information with caution.

I am researching my ggg-grandfather Alex Capshaw. He was born abt 1804 presumably in AL and married Nancy?? said to be full blood Indian from DeKalb Co, AL Family legend is that he "stole her" from the Indian Lands where she was supposed to have married a Chief's eldest son. Alex and Nancy's children were Sarah E (my gg-grandmother), William, Joseph, Benjamin, Josie, Kathy, Martha, and Roseanna. It is thought that all of the kids were born in AL except for Kathy, Josie, and Roseanna. My grandmother (Sarah's g-granddaughter) gave us these names several years ago from her father's belongings. Have been unable to get past Alex and Nancy. Would appreciate any info and will share what info I have.
Norma York

Gordon - I sent you an e-mail, but I wanted to also answer you here.

I am the gg grandson of William Henry Capshaw through his son Henry Frances "Frank" Capshaw who married Ida Pollock. Frank and Ida are both buried in Tushka Cemetery in Tushka, Oklahoma located in Atoka County. They had 5 children: Henry, Bessie, Janice, E.J. and Dorothy.

I notice in one of your posts that you are descended from Marion Capshaw. I would like to have the information you mentioned having. Are you descended through Marion's first or second wife?

I have a photo of George and Annie Capshaw Batts that I would be willing to share. It was confirmed by one of their descendants. I also have a photo of William Henry's mother and her third husband that I received from one of their descendants.

You can reach me at dwarfhealer@yahoo.com

David White

Capshaws of Mississippi 1870s & 1880s

I am looking for information on my great-grandmother Cora Lee Capshaw's family. She was born in 1877 in Grenada Co., Mississippi. Her father was W.W. Capshaw, and her mother was Sarah Gillon Capshaw. This is about the only information I have on them as the father died when Cora was about 9 and the mother when Cora was about 13. I already have a death certificate on Cora and it only lists her maiden name. I have looked for her with her family on the 1880 census, but have not been able to find them. I have a marriage record for her parents, and I have a note that one of her daughters wrote confirming who her parents were, but I have no official proof. Sarah Gillon Capshaw was the daughter of Hugh Gillon, Jr. and Mary Hill. Hugh Gillon was a descendant of John Gillon who fought in the Revolution in North Carolina. Hugh Gillon, Sr. and his wife Jemima Nesbit Gillon came to Mississippi around 1846. If anyone has ANY knowledge of W.W. Capshaw or his wife Sarah Gillon Capshaw, please e-mail me.

Thanks!

Melissa Nesbitt

Have you seen the Hembree website? Go to
www.rootsweb.com/~tnmcmin2/Hembrees.htm it has over 100 pages of information. The original name was Amory then Emory then Hembree. There is a question if James Hembree 1785 wed to Hester/Esther Capshaw 1807-1875 was known as James Welch which would be my line. No I don't have marriage date but it must have been between 1828-1850 as James first wife Sarah 1794 died 1828. I think all the children were hers and James except Jonathan, William, Carroll, Eleanor, Evan. Which would be children of Esther. The rest were born earlier.
Hope this helps. You can email me direct for more.
I have Esthers parents as Josiah & Elizabeth Capshaw.

I'm really confused now. I am researching the Emery/Emorys. When I found Carrol D. Emory in 1860 with wife Maria and children in DeKalb Co I thought I had found my family line but it just led to another brick wall in the maze. In 1860 they are living next door to Hester Grammer. In 1870 this Carrol and Maria can't be found and these children are living with Hester Grammer. I suspected that Ester/Hester was a woman who married an Emory then a Capshaw then a Grammer. Your post sounds like she was a Capshaw that married an Emory then a Grammer. Have you found documentation for Ester/Hester Capshaw marriage to James Hembree/Emory? That is the link I have not been able to find. Do you know when or where they married? I am still trying to figure out if these children are Emorys or Capshaws. Someday we will luck up on the puzzle piece to complete the picture!!!

Mary annie Capshaw was my grandfather's sister. His name was Marion (Bud) Capshaw Who is also buried in Harper's Valley. Kiowa was the nearest town. Several Capshaws are buried in McAlester. Also, my oldest sister is buried there. Several other Capshaws were living in the area.

Capshaws in DeKalb County, TN

So, are there still any Capshaw researchers out there. Still trying to connect Hester Capshaw, John Thomas Capshaw, Carroll D. Capshaw/Emory and Thomas Capshaw/Emory of DeKalb Co, Tn. Does anybody have any proof of there being a John Thomas Capshaw and his marrying Hester/Ester? Any research as to why they changed their names to Emory or was John Thomas really an Emory? Sooooooo many questions.
