Your web posting

I do not have any hard facts on "Capt", just a family oral history that I can trace to the late 1800's to my great grandfather. The Capt's came to the USA from a French region of Switzerland as refugees from the French revolution. The original family name is Capet, but was changed to Capt to match the English pronunciation. The Capt family has been in Central and South Texas since the early 1800's. Some Capts have lived in Dripping Springs, Blanco County, Texas since about 1830. I hope this helps a little, but it is all I know. I would be interested in hearing anything that you found out. My email is mike@mikecapt.com

Mary Elisabeth Capt

I am not a formal researcher, so much of what I have to offer is only family oral history. Please take it on that value only, and nothing more. I believe that Mary Elisabeth Capt was my Great Grandfather's (William Ebenezer Capt)sister. I have William's bible somewhere(I asked my wife to dig through the attic for it, but that could be difficult). When my wife and I were selecting names for our first child, I remember that we chose Elizabeth Rozell based partly on family names from this bible. When/if my wife finds the bible, I will send you a copy of the entry. Emery Robert Capt was my Grandfather. William Marion Capt was my Father. My uncle James Emery Capt lives in Pharr, Texas and my uncle Robert Emery Capt lives in Plano, Texas. If willing, my uncles could probably answer the question definitively. When I asked the geneology questions to my family I was given the short quip that I was to never ask again and to never contact any of the other Capt family or my Great Grandfather would "roll over in his grave". According to the oral history, my Great Grandfather's brother (Emmitt?) killed one of his brothers over an argument about inheritence. As a result, William Ebenezer never spoke to his family again. This is about all that I know. If you have any additional information, then please let me know and maybe I can piece it together with my information to help a little more.

searching for family bible

I looked through my old bibles and I did not find what I was looking for yet. My main thought is that I have moved twice since I last saw that Bible and I need to keep searching through the boxes. I will keep looking.

I am pleased to report that I did find that my Great-Grandfather was William Bratton Capt. Since Louis Capt's wife was Elizabeth Armstrong Bratton I feel that well establishes me to this line. I still do not know which of Louis & Elizabeth's children I descend from. Hopefully, as I unravel the puzzle, I will also find your Grandmother.

In reference to the old family bible that you posted a note about seeing, do you know if any preservation work has been done to save it?

William Michael Capt

Message to Louis

Richard,

I am confident that Louis is part of the Arnold Capt line (son of the original Louis Capt). The Arnold Capt line is fairly well documented as they were successful merchants in Blanco, Texas and I do not believe that Mary Elisabeth is part of that line.

As a note, I have two Blanco County historical books that have some very interesting information on the Capt family. Louis Capt owned a grist mill and was County Treasurer. His son Arnold owned a dry goods store. Another son Robert also owned a dry goods store and was Postmaster of Cypress Mill, Texas.

Further, I have found a fifty page Capt family history in French that includes a family coat of arms. It has two Thunderbirds on the top and grapevines below. The family history states that the Capt name was originally Capet. The name change was made in about 1550 A.D. when the family moved from France to the Joux Valle of Switzerland about that time. The family history also states that the family was a direct line of the Hugh Capet dynasty that started ruling France about 1250 A.D. My French is not as strong as it should be, but I believe the family history also states that a member of the Capt family was also the president of Switzerland about 1770 or so.

Anyway, that is enough for an email. Please contact me directly at mike@mikecapt.com if you want any additional information. I will make relevant postings if I find any important new information.

Mike, Thanks for your information. I will e-mail you later, when I have more time. I wonder how many Capts lived in Blanco county or even in the State of Texas in the later part of the 19th centry. If you would like some help in translation, I am fairly fluent in french, having been married (Until recently) to a french woman.

Richard C. Browning, Jr.

Louis.
I am researching the line of Mary Elisabeth Capt, wife of Louis Pryor Browning.

Louis, I have a Mary Elizabeth Capt who married Louis Prior Browning. These were my grandparents. Mary Elizabeth died in 1960 or 61. All my data concerning Mary and Louis is in storage for the moment. I believe that Mary's ancestors came the French part of Switzerland, possibly the Vauclause area. I have seen a Capt family bible in French that was published in Reims France. Do not remember any details from this bible except that it was not in good shape and the inscriptions handwritten on the cover pages were almost completely illegible.

Please let me know what information you have concerning the Capts as I am very interested in filling out my family tree. Main families in my line that I can trace, back to immigrants are the Brownings, Cartwrights, and Ingrams.

Richard C.
