This is so interesting. I was always told the Caras were descended from Spanish sailors, but am not sure where my family got that idea, as Cara is also Gaelic (and Italian, not but not Spanish, as far as I know). I've been told maddeningly little about them, though!
My grandmother, Catherine May, was a Cara; she was born around 1901, and had three or four sisters. I know the names of two of them: Rose and Mona. Her father was a dentist from Penzance, but the family had apparently gone up to Liverpool by the time she was born. I'd figured her dad's name was probably Stephen, but now I see that was a pretty safe bet, what with the plethora of Stephens!
Catherine's descendants are now in the north west of England (mostly), British Columbia (my parents emigrated here in the mid-'60s), Holland, and, strangely enough, Melbourne, though we don't bear the Cara surname.
