LF Info on LUGO Y CARABALLO from Seaside, Monterey, CA (P.R. Roots in Guaynilla)

I'm looking for family of Alejandro LUGO BORRERO and his wife Francisca CARABALLO.

I know nothing of Francisca-- I got her name from the 1940 Census in PR as married to Alejandro LUGO BORRERO. I've found quite a few bits of census information, but I don't know who (or if) her siblings were to corroborate.

Alejandro would join the US ARMY in 1942 and serve in WWII, So.Korea and was released from service 1967 as Staff Sergeant. He was injured in the Korean War in 1951. I believe he is buried in Mission Memorial Park in Seaside, Ca. I am connected to Alejandro through is mother Alejandra BORRERO Y LUGO.

Please, if you would prefer to message me rather than reply then use the subject line "Francisca Caraballo"

My grandmother Teresa on my father's side has a maiden name of Carballo. I have a picture of both of her parents, but only the picture of her father has anything written on the back of it: Juan Carballo. I have been working on ancestry.com for weeks trying to trace Juan. I'd love to trace my Cuban heritage. I have attached the pictures I have of Teresa's parents. I know she had a sister still in Cuba and Teresa was her "sponsor". I do not know if her sister ever got out of Cuba. Teresa passed in Aug of 1971 as did her husband, William Clay Altman. Please reply to this message, I'm going nuts not knowing my Carballo side of my family!

Deb Altman
debbers55@hotmail.com

Hello,

I am currently tracking back from my generation of my family tree to see where my Grandfathers taken name Caraballo came from. He was born in Puerto Rico as well as my Grandmother. But I came to find out that his name was not in fact Caraballo but Rosas Medina. He took on Caraballo and used it as his last name to honor the family who raised him. He either did not want to know his mother or never knew her. Due to the fact that both my grandparents have passed I have alot of work on my hands trying to get correct information from my aunts, uncles, and mother. I can say that he was a vert popular personality when it came to birthdays, funerals and holidays. This is because he would be asked to come and sing guenaldos at these events. My grand father was named Pablo Antonio Caraballo is nickname was Don Pablo. My mother informed me that his name and our family name should be Pablo Antonio Rosas Medina. My grandmothers name was Maria Dolores Ortiz Perez and married was Maria Dolores Caraballo Ortiz her nickname was Dona Lola. Her mother was a resident of Yauco, Puerto Rico and her mothers name was Dona Juana Calixta Perez Feliciano (my mom says she remembers calling her Mama Calixta in her childhood and she passed away at the age of 110). Her father was Juan Romulo Ortiz Martinez from Guelarte, Puerto Rico. If anyone has any information I would greatly appreicate it. Trying to fill in the missing parts is pretty hard when you have a limited information.
The Caraballos are from Yauco, Lares, Adjuntas area. I believe they came from the Canary Islands. My grandmother was a caraballo. The Caraballos are linked to the Dastas, Orengo, Gutierrez families from that area. Look at some public trees of those families and you'll probably find yor relatives there. Their origin is in the mountains of PR named above. Various towns in Yauco, like Aguas Blancas, Duey, Barinas in yauco. You can see these towns in Google earth. Also check the PR white pages. I went there in 2009, but need more time.
Hope this helps.

I am actually the original post-er of this thread, and yes it took me ten years but I actually have some info. Haven't been able to get too much info about the family tree, but I do know A LOT more now about the last name! Caraballo was originally just Carballo which is related to the Spanish name for oak. This is the tree that is represented in the family shield. The sword and arm signify that our family name was deeply rooted in the military. Carballos/Caraballos were major players in the Spanish military, boosting several high ranking members and even had a special relationship as guardians for the Catholic Church, and subsequently the monarchy. The additional "a" in Caraballo was added around the time of the Spanish Inquistion. Here is where it gets interesting. Carbal was originally an Italian word/name (there is even an island named for it). Our particular name, however, is a Sephardic Jewish surname (see also Caravallo/Caraball). While originally of Jewish descent, our ancestors accepted Catholocism as their religion somewhere between the 12th and 14th century (most likely closer to the 12th considering our rise within the Catholic Church). Sidenote before I come to my conclusion, there is a region in Spain named Carballo, but I haven't confirmed whether or not it was named for us, or for the original Sephardic Jews. Anyways, during the Spanish Inquisition, the Catholic Church challenged the Carballo name, suggesting that it sounded and looked too Jewish (easy to understand, because it WAS a Jewish name), so to "latinize" the name and ultimately keep our good standing with the Church, an additional "a" was added to it, making it Caraballo. This is about 6 years of research on our name, but while it isn't much, I still found it fascinating!

I have been searching for relatives of my grandmother from Yauco. Her name Teresa Sanchez Caraballo y.... Dastas. We probably have the same blood line. My grandmother was Caraballo by her mother, a descendant of the Dastas from France. Luis Dastas came to PR in the 1860's and I believe, one of the daughters married a Caraballo creating the Caraballo-Dastas line. One in the line, my great grandmother. I went to Yauco December 09, but couldn't meet any. There are still Caraballo Dastas living in Yauco in the white pages. I have to make a second trip to clear my mind. Please let me know if you have any information regarding my grandma: Teresa Sanchez Caraballo. I don't know where she was born in PR although she was in Yauco in the early 1900's before moving to San Juan.
Thank you,
Julia

I am looking for a brother from my mother's side I never met. My mother did not raise him, but his paternal grandmother Julia and his father Jose Luis Ocasio did. My brother was given his father's name when born but ultimately he changed his last name to Cirilo, my mother's last name. I was able to get his birth certificate through my mom and it says Joe Cirilo. My brother was raised in the Bronx, NY. His father Jose Luis Ocasio may have been born in 1947. Their family is from Puerto Rico. I once reached his grandmother Julia by chance over 10 years ago and she said that my brother had been missing for 12 years and that she hired investigators with no luck. She said his father had a horrible accident and was bedridden at home. I lost her number and could not reach her again! I would appreciate any information.

1ro abril 2010. Saludos.Blanca:
Hi,
Mi abuela was from Yauco. I don't know her parent's names.
Her name was Teresa Sanchez Caraballo y Dastas.
Gracias,
Yulin
