Re: John Green Carawan

My great-grandfather was John (Jay) Green Carawan. Father of Royce (mackey) Carawan, Claudia, Linda, Shirley and Annette. My grandma Maw-Maw, was Claudia Ray Carawan Smithwick. Her mother was Elma Williams Carawan. I still remember walking into their house in Hyde Co and hearing him say HEY HONEY so loud, that as a child I wanted to cover my ears...lol. In third grade for Christmas I unwrapped my present and it was a cereal box. I tried to act excited until they told me to look and it was a pretty slip to wear under my best Sunday dress. Their orchard always smelled so amazing until the bees wanted to get me. I have so many memories I'd love to share. Until then, my final one will be...when Grandma Elma was in the hospital. It was the last time I saw her. I was 16. Just sitting with her, knowing she was going "home" soon. She told me something that shocked me beyond anything. She told me to take care of my baby. At that point, I didn't even know I was pregnant. Now my "baby" is 13. I'm married to my HS sweetheart, we have another child, a son, and Grandma Elma passed away two days after she told me that. Grandma and Papa Jay meant a lot to me and made a huge difference in my life. If I can share anything to help anyone else "live" through our family, please contact me.

I have been researching the Carawan line.
I lived on a farm outside of Roanoke Rapids, but graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School.

Can someone please set me straight on the mysterious Asa and Winny Carawan?
I have recieved information from a good source that Asa and Winny were the parents of five children: 1) Christopher (1820-1873 married Patsey Watson) 2) Benjamin Robertson Carawan (1828-1890 married Sarah Elizabeth Holton) 3) Joseph G. (Green?) Carawan (1829-1895 married Nancy White and Polly Hall) 4) Marcus Carawan (1830-1917 married Mary Elizabeth Fulford and Marietta Alcock) 5) Bernard Carawan (1833-1928 married Melissa O'Neal and Nancy Elizabeth Leary. These were all Pamlico County NC Carawans, and most researchers should be familiar with them.
My problem is that up until this point I had these as the children of one Benjamin Carawan (1784-1839) and Delilah White, along with some other children: Selina, Frances, Ebbin Wallace, Daniel, and Ann, all about which I have no further information.
So which are the parents of all of these children? I have not run across any records of an Asa Carawan anywhere, save an estate record listed on John McGowan's page with a date of 1847. What are the particulars of Asa and Winny? Anyone have any ideas? Or do I have the entire family wrong?
