For Malisa:
I know it's been a long time since you posted, but I recently found a marriage record for James C Custer to Fannie Nunley.
The marriage record found @familysearch.org lists James C Carbaugh (b. 1880) marrying Gornie Munely (prob. transcription error) on 26 Feb 1902 (her parents are listed as Geo. and Ellen).

I found a snippet from the Clinch Valley News (available free at http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov) dated Mar 7, 1902:
Pounding Mill, VA. March 3-Mr. J. C. Carbaugh, of Tazewell, and Miss Fannie Nunley, of White Forge, VA., were married at the residence of Mr. W. W. Bennett, on the 26th of February, Rev. J. M. Sparks officiating. An elegant and bountiful repast was served to which a large number of people sat down, and of course, greatly enjoyed.

Additionally, I believe this is about the same James Carbaugh:
From Clinch Valley News 25 Dec 1914:
James Carbaugh, son of W. H. Carbuagh, of Unaka, a brakeman on the C. C. & O., was killed at Dante Monday night in a freight wreck. Carbaugh leaves a wife and five children, and made his home at St. Paul. No details of the accident are available at this time.

I hope this helps and that you are still monitoring responses to this post.

Hi Edith,
Getting back into this after many years away!! You have done a wonderful job on the Carbaugh family tree I am enjoying it and sharing it with my Mom ( Marie Edna Newman Boyer) Mary's grandaughter. I live right outside of DC so if you ever want me to go look something up at the archives let me know or if you want to come up and do your own you are more then welcome to stay here I am 15 miles from DC. I noticed that someone had put the Newmans with Hazel and another child that is not the Carbaugh connection it is the one with Joseph and Edgar children of Mary and Joseph Newman. Let me know what I can do. Is there anyway to download on Family tree the Carbaugh family tree you have put together?

The 1870 Census for Tazewell lists John Henry Carbaugh, married to Margaret with the following children: William H., Rachel C., John M.E., Margaret, Charles E., Clifford, Ballard---so we're in the same family you spoke of with John Henry as the patriarch---the 1870 Census lists that John Henry Carbaugh and Margaret (Skelton) were born in Virginia, not Pennsylvania.

Additionally, the US and International Marriage Records 1560-1900, source # 3224.012 states that Margaret Skelton, Born 1825 and spouse John Carbaugh Born 1816, married in 1844. The US & Int'l Marriage Records 1560-1900 does not reveal which state the marriage occurred (VA or PA). Ancestry.com has an option for ordering the document, but you have to know the state of issue of the marriage certificate.

These two documents open the debate: Are Margaret Skelton and John Carbaugh from Pennsylvania or Virginia? Why would the census taker write on the census form that the couple was born in Virginia and not Pennsylvania? Does anyone in the family have a marriage certificate for the couple that shows the state of issue?

Margaret Carbough/Carbaugh

My g.grandmother was named Margaret Carbough. My mother who will be 90 this month told me that she recalls her grandmother Margaret had at least 6 children. Two boys named Willie and Gus (which was short for something else), and four girls; Mary (oldest), Flora (youngest), Leyune (spelling?), and Mylinda Belle (aka Linnie Belle).

Linnie Belle (b.12 Feb 1892, Eggleston, VA; d. 9 jan 1972 Taneytown, MD) is my grandmother. She married Roland Robert Robinson, aka Robert Roland Robinson (b. 29 Jan 1888 Wythe County, VA; M. 8 Sept 1917, Bluefield, WV; d. 12 Jul 1944 Huntington, WV.).

I can't find any formal documentation of Margaret Carbough or Henry Hurt even existing, let alone getting married! Perhaps Henry went by another name. My mother said that Margaret Carbough talked about Tazewell County, VA and Giles County, VA, but she has no idea if Margaret was born there. Linnie Belle Hurt was supposed to have been born in Eggleston, VA on 12 Feb 1892, but I can't find documentation of that, either. When Margaret Carbough was alive, she talked about being a cousin (don't know if by blood or marriage) to Martha Wayles Skelton who was Thomas Jefferson's spouse.

A previous poster stated that John Henry Carbaugh married a Margaret Shelton in PA and then moved to Tazewell, VA. I tried to follow that trail to see if maybe the Sheltons and the Skeltons were the same family, but that trail went dry. Furthermore, it turns out (if I did my research correctly) that Martha Wayles Skelton was a daughter of John Wayles and Martha Epes. I'm guessing, maybe incorrectly so, that the Skelton name must have been Martha Epes next husband after John Wayles, so if Margaret was a blood relative to Martha Wayles Skelton, it would have been via the Epes or Wayles families.

Anyway, does anybody know anything about Margaret Carbough/Carbaugh? Did she marry someone named Henry Hurt and does anyone have any info on him or his family? Does anyone have any info on the link to MWS that my g.grandmother claimed?

You will need to ask…lol
It does tell where the Carbaugh came from, and now more then ever I believe that Carbaugh was not the spelling that our ancestor spelled. There has been one that I have made contact with that their DNA come close to my, with a 50% of being related.
Great Grandfather was named Karr, was born in 1620 and lived in Schwaigern, Heilbronn, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Hello!

I see you have had a posting for 7 years. I've not cotinued reading to see if you have received this same response so forgive me if this is old news. Your querry stated you did find Lakes and Carbaughs in Clumberland Co.PA. Are you talking about the Tonoloway Church Cemetary? I could not find any Carbaughs there even though my Carbaugh ancestors lived in the Thompson Township area for a short time. But, there are many Lakes buried there. Also at this church, I've found many other ancestors. There are booklets that have been printed by the Fulton Co. Historical Society that are filled with wonderful reading on this chuch and the history of it's members of which included the Lakes.

Carbaugh in Franklin, PA

I am needing information on Daniel Carbaugh, born about 1858 and died in 1933 in Franklin, PA. He married Annie E Staley and had four children -- Samuel, Edna, Emma, and Harry. I know Harry died as a baby in 1899 and that Emma married a Sprow, but that's about it. I would like to find out Daniel and Annie's marriage date and information on Daniel's parents. I am doing a family chart for my grandchildren and need this information. Anyone out there that can help?? Thanks so much!

Re: Simon Carbaugh (Kirbach) New Info Found

Gary,

Do you have any information regarding a Mary Carbaugh (Carabaugh?) that married a J B Johnston? The only other information I have is that they had a son Nathaniel born about 1864 in Indiana. I have a copy of Nathaniel's marriage cert listing his parents name.

Any light you can shed would be most appreciated.
