Re: CARBERRY FAMILY TREE

My wife is a descendant of James Crowe of Gobarralong, a family whose history is related by Angela Young in Ripe for harvest, self-published in 1980. I am interested in whether any further information has been developed since then by family members. The first Crowe's arrived in NSW as free settlers in 1813 and settled in Appin and then Gobarralong.

I note that Helen Carberry, Nicholas Carberry, Jerome Carberry of Gobarralong, Mrs Stan Carberry, J. Michael Carberry are mentioned by Angela in her publication. I notice also there was quite a close relationship between the two families.

I wonder whether you are able to add any information.

Phil Drew (my wife is the grand-daughter of Walter James Crowe, son of Thomas Andrew crowe whose father was James of Gobarralong).

Re: Grace and/or Virginia Carberry

Hello, I bought a book about a year ago, it was a Baby's record book, illustrated by Maude Humphrey, I bought it because I knew Maude Humphrey was Humphrey Bogart's mother, and I had intentions of selling it for the original artwork. I began researching the names in the book, and came across your site looking for information regarding Virginia and Grace. The book is record of Virginia's birth, it has Grace's name as her sister, Mother Emily R. Carberry, father Stephen ? can't make out the middle initial, it is so fancy, also mentions a cousin Dorothy, The book apparently was a gift for Virginia from Louis G. Sherman. Please feel free to contact me, for any additional information. Dorothy at 818 761-4778 or email Bobbymcghee1@yahoo.com. I am glad I bought the book

Re: Carbery around Carrick-On-Suir or Waterford

Not sure if this is of any help:

I have a William Carbery (born abt 1813 in Carrick-on-Suir) and wife Bridget Doolan, born same place. They married around 1835, Carrick-on-Suir. I am thinking that perhaps William could be your Bridget's brother or at least a cousin? William & Bridget came over to Quebec, Canada between 1844-48. Daughters Margaret (b 1837) and Honora (b 1844) were born in Carrick-on-Suir while remaining children: Ellen (b1848); William (b1851); John (b1853); Bridget (1856) and Catherine Agnes (b1858) were all born in Quebec City.

This is a little interesting: Daughters Margaret and Bridget both married a Felix Carbray. Same man. Felix married late wife Margaret's sister, Bridget. Felix descends from a Neill John Carbray, son of Edward Carbery and Margaret O'Neill of Carrickcastle/Carrycastle, Parish of Eglish, Co. Tyrone. I descend directly from Neill John's brother, Terence. Now both Neill John and my Terence came to Quebec as well. Neill John married in Quebec as well in 1833 and his son Felix was born in Quebec. Interestingly enough, we have a Carbery from Co. Tyrone marrying a Carbery from Carrick-on-Suir. Carbery is not a common Irish name so what would be the odds of Felix marrying a Carbery who was not at all related to him? This leads me to believe that perhaps the Carberys of Carrick-on-Suir were somehow related to the Carberys of Co. Tyrone. Just for your info.

Anyway, perhaps the above William was indeed related to your Bridget - another part of the puzzle perhaps.

Lynn

Hi,

I am law student from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. I am conducting research on the first black students at McGill's Faculty of Law and I believe that John Edward Doston Carberry (later Sir) may have been the Faculty of Law's first graduate (Class of 1923). I know that he was born in Grenada in 1893 but then immigrated to Jamaica sometime after completing his legal studies in Canada. He was married to a certain Georgina (maiden name unknown) and had a son, named Hugh Doston Carberry (born July 12, 1921 - Died June 28, 1989) who also became a judge at Jamaica's Court of Appeal.

I would like to find out Sir John Edward Doston Carberry's date of death and anything else that anyone may know about him. I need his date of death to have access to his student records, which legally I cannot access unless he has been deceased for 30 years. If anyone can help I would be so grateful.

Thank you

Hi Suzanne
I just wanted to touch base with you again as I'm now doing some research into William BYRNE who was the first husband of Nanno/Ann. Do you have any leads as to who Williams mother is at all?

What I have been told by the various researchers is that Williams father Michael was living with a Susannah ROBERTS on the 1806 Census, could she be Williams mother?? There is also an ad placed in the newspaper by
Michael Byrne stating that he would accept no more claims made on him by this Susannah Roberts. This was in the paper in Feb 1810. Also William and
Ann/Nanno's first child was Susannah wasn't she??

Do you have any idea where the date for Williams birth comes from re 4-10-1807at West Bargo I've been trying to find where this information comes from for a while now. Anyway I will leave it there and hope to hear
from you soon. Kind regards Dianna

Hi I'm making further enquiries into Nanno BYRNES first husband WILLIAM BYRNE who was born on 4-10-1807 in West Bargo NSW to Michael BYRNE. Nanno and William were married in 1826 in Campbelltown. There was a Susannah ROBERTS living with Michael BYRNE on the 1806 Census and I was wondering if she is accepted as being Michaels mother at all. I'm descended from William and Nanno's daughter Rosannah who married JOSEPH CARBERRY.

It may be a coincidence but Nanno/Ann and Williams first childs name is Susannah and second childs name is Michael so are they name after Williams parents?? If anyone knows where this birth date originates from or if they know who Williams mother is I would be most grateful. Kind regards Dianna

Im trying to find more information on this William who had a twin brother Michael, these are the sons of a Michael Byrne. I do not know who the boys mother is though, I hope someone maybe able to help me with this. Any help much appreciated kind regards Dianna

Later Thomas Carberry and John Perry Hilton were appointed by Abe Lincoln as Justice of the Peace of Wash., DC - John Pery Hilton is the father of Carberry Summerfield Hilton - I wonder where the name Summerfield came from - often it was the maiden name of his mother or grand mother.

The only one I found in Derrynoose in the Griffith Valuations was the James Carberry from Tullyhirm so chances are that one could be a decedent.

I am going to send you a message Paul as I have a lot of Hughes who witnessed events. The all seem to be from the Tullyhirm, Listrakelt, Fergort and Rowan areas which of course are all right next to each other. One lived right next to the James Carberry in question.

My 2x great grandparents were Michael Morgan and Ann Branigan who appear to have been living in Listrakelt. There first child was baptized 20 Oct 1859 in Derrynoose. Sponsors are listed as James Carbera (Carberry) and Alice. Looking at the Griffith Valuation records which I believe are about 1854 there is only on James Carberry listed in Tullyhirm. No Cabera in Armagh. Interesting that right in that area are other names I have noticed on baptism records going back another generation. I just found the actually Griffith Valuation book link and it has been an eye opener to say the least.

I am looking for info and family lines of my great grandmother,
Mary Ann Carberry.
She was born in the late 1800's sometime after 1890. She died about 1986 or 87 at the age of 95.
She married Samuel Nathaniel Higgins and they had many children. One of whom was my Grandfather Joseph Higgins born in 1913.
Samuel was a Boston, (Distric 6) Police Officer.
Mary (I have been told by my great aunt Rosemary) was a model for Jordan Marsh & Co. in Boston MA.
I have a census with Samuel and Mary Higgins and their family on it (can't recall the exact year at the moment) and Mary's parents are listed as being born in Ireland.
This is about all we know about Mary.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Renee
LadyAlaise@gmail.com

I've checked another Carbery tree belonging to "madelinetapia" on Ancestry to see if I could find anyone in her tree to match your people, but no joy. She and I exchanged info a while back, and she was able to help me with several of my women. She might be someone whom you could contact for leads, too.

I will let you know when I find something useful.
Hi Kathy
It's entirely possible that there is some relationship - Carberry is not a very common name so I'm interested in pursuing that line of inquiry. All the details i know about her are :
Catherine Carberry, b 27 December 1844, Secumderbad, Madras, parents Edward Carberry and Maria
Married Joseph Michael Williams 7 Feb 1861, Madras
Children were Anne (b India 1862), Margaret Jane (b India 1866), Isabella (b India 1868, d 1869), Louisa catherine (b India 1870), George (b 1873, Woolwich, England), John (b 1875 India), twins Lena and Eva (b Essex 1879), Joseph M (b 1885 Lewes Sussex)

Catherine also had a brother named George, born 1853, who is recorded living with her family in the 1881 English census, and had just come out of gaol - it's not clear if this was an Indian or an English gaol.
Keep all this on file, as I will keep your information, and if we get any further links to add to the picture lets be in touch.
Regards
Kim

I don't have a Catherine listed on the school roster, but I do have several Carberys/Carberrys, so I'm always interested in potential siblings. Its also possible that Edward may be the brother or father of the other Carberry girls who did attend.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this.
Cheers,
Kathy Wilson

Hello Paul,
I can help with the Carberry line that came to the US, however I don't know how they would connect to your gggrandmother Elizabeth. Felix Carberry was my husband's g grandfather he was born about 1848. Documents here list his parents as Owen and Rose Carberry. We know that the family was from Keady. Felix and Bridget were married in Ireland in 1880. They emmigrated in 1880 to Auburn NY. There are other Carberry's in the vicintiy, but I do not know the exact relationship.
From her birth date it sounds like Elizabeth could have been his sister or cousin. Do you know the name of her parents? I have done little Irish research so have no idea of his brothers and sisters.
Contact me at jaswalcy@aol.com and I can give you his information that I do have.
Sue

Carbery around Carrick-On-Suir or Waterford

Looking for information on Martin Rockett and Bridget Carberry married sometime probably before 1831. Their daughter was Anastasia M. Rockett born about 1831.

Anastasia M. Rockett married James Egan in 1859, listed "Ballyneale and Grangemockler, Marriage 1839-1921". Patrick Doyle and Catherine Doyle were witnesses.

"In Waterford a Catholic church was built at the request of Mrs. Doyle on land donated by her. Mrs. Doyle was of the Carbery-Rockett family." Patrick and Catherine Doyle were probably relatives of Anastasia M. Rockett.
Has anyone come across our Christopher/Christy Carberry, b. abt. 1818 in Ire.; married Julia McDonald of Co. Kildare in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1848?
Their children: Edward William; Mary Ann; Sarah; Joseph C;and Francis James Carberry, if the naming pattern helps.
I believe Christopher had a brother or possibly cousin, named John (b. abt 1807 - obit said in Co. Louth) died in New Orleans.
Christopher was inducted into an Irish Brigade at the start of the U.S. Civil War; but was soon mustered out.
He officially became a US citizen in 1868. Witnesses when he declared his intention to become a citizen were Thomas Nolan and Martin Cash.
Daughter Sarah married Thomas Ryan,s/o Thomas Ryan (Ire to USA) and Anne Clark (b. Co.,Cavan;died in New Orleans).
