Hi Phylis, I also am searching for the "Carbon'' surname. My search is for Catherine Carbon, who was born in County Donegal, Ireland about 1871,she immigrated to America and came to the town of Leadville, Colo. She had a sister named Susan who immigrated to the same place in 1892. They lived I think in the Town of Ardara back in Ireland. Kind regards, Edward---smithhigh307@aol.com

Dear Jon,

Thank you so much for your helpful suggestions about the "Carbon" surname. Alas, I still have had no luck finding out anything more about this mysterious ancestor Ann Carbon/Corribeen/etc. She lived in Carna Parish, Co. Galway, probably. Her son appeared in Callowfeenish and Rusheenamanagh, both in that Parish. So I have a general geographic area at least.

If I find any more info, I'll let you know.

Thanks,

Margaret

Re: Carbon Surname from Ireland

I am descended from Corbetts of Cornamona and the name was in fact originally not Corbett. It is listed as Cribben in Griffith's Primary Valuation (the printed version says something like Cuban, but that is a typo. The handwritten original says Cribben). I also have a marriage record from 1864 that lists the name as Curibbin. I think the name is the same as the O'Coirbin/O'Curriben that shows up in some books of Irish names. If so, I think the original name was O'Corbain.

If yours comes from the same original, it is not suprising that it might be spelled as Carbon or Carabine or Carbine.

I would be interested in hearing from you if you have learned any more about it since the date of this posting.

Thanks,
Jon

My great grandmother is Mary (Vitek) Mahlik. Her husband is Andrew Mahlik. Andrew served in the Austrian-Hungarian army. They came to the USA in December of 1868.They came from the Plzen area in Bohemia. They settled in Northern Wisconsin in the town of Pilsen. Andrew Mahliks father's name was Martin Mahlik. I wonder if the Mary Mahlik you are taking about could be a sister of Andrew Mahlik. Larry Mahlik

I have a gg-grandmother Anne Carbon from the Carna area in County Galway, who married my John Foley and had son John about 1830. I have been told there are Carbons in Carna area, also there were 13 Carbines/Carbines in County Mayo near the Galway border in the 1855 Griffiths. Carabine is a North Mayo name.

A priest in Ireland told me Carbin/Carribine etc. is sometimes Corbett, and there are some Corbetts in Cornamona, near Cong, Co. Mayo, at the top of Lough Corrib,

Hope this helps.

Margaret

My ggrandmother, Susan Carbon, married Patrick McNelis in Carbon Co., PA. I'm presuming she came from Co. Donegal, Ireland because most of the Irish in that area came from there. They were married in 1852 in Summit Hill, PA. Don't know anything at all about her family of origin. Her name may have been Carabin in Ireland. Have losts about the descendants. Will share

Possible connection

The Carbons you mention could possibly be relatives, but I know nothing at all about Susan's family. The fact that you found these in Rahn Twp. (Coaldale, PA) could mean there is some connection. The name Sara is frequently nicknamed Sue. But that could be grasping at straws. My Susan was born about 1835 and married in 1852 to Patrick McNelis. I'm not sure when she came from Ireland, so you see, I can't be much help to you. But I might pursue the difference in the counties for the search for her family of origin. One town is in Carbon County and the other in Schuylkill County.

Surname Carbon

I am researching my family and discovered an odd situation in the 1880 Census in Rahn Twp which is near Mauch Chunk which you mentioned in your message. The family- Michael Carbon and Annie Carbon appears in 1880 Census (PA). The four children have the same names as my graandfathers family. John, Isabel, Sara, and Michael (my grandfather) This family was also listed as Carleon in the Index to the 1880 Census. In 1890 Census, I found my grandfather family without parents living in Tamaqua, PA. Does any of this information ring a bell? Let me know. Thanks Cyril J. Carroll

Thanks for the information. The family I am referring to was found in the 1880 Census. All of the children were born after 1867 thru 1881. Apparently a name change may have happened. My grandfather might be one of these children. By 1890, I found the same first names and ages, but the surname was Carroll. They resided in Tamaqua, PA by then.
Let me know if you find any more information, again thanks and good luck.

Cyril J.Carroll

Traci,
The main branch of my family resides in the Ashland/Highbridge/Mellen part of Wisconsin. It's way up in the northwoods, on the shores of Lake Superior. There are a lot of Carbons in the area you're looking for. A good site for you would be genforum.com because there are more Carbons on that site. I don't think we have any connections because none of my family lives in that area. But who knows? As far as I've been able to tell, my Carbons are the only "Bohunks." The others are Irish. My Carbon was orginally spelled Karbon and is actually a shortened version of the original name. Good luck in your search.

Victoria
