Hello Rich,
It is possible that "Lorraine Carbone" would be Roxie Etta's mother - Lorraine (Sadie) Rachel Blankenship. Born in July 12, 1903 & passed April 10, 1983. My information is that she was 16 & Thomas was about 28 when they married.

She would have been about 39 at the time of your Grandfather's Wedding. I'm not sure when Thomas & Lorraine separated or what kind of contact they keep in.

Roxie remembered Uncle Frank & Aunt Julia. That they were cousins, possible 3rd & that it was an arranged marriage. She also remembered their son Frank Jr. Roxie did say that she stayed with them. It had to be around 1934 or 1935 as she was about 14-15 years old.

I'm still looking for my other notes from Mom.

I do know that Roxie lived with her Grandparents, John L.& Cora E. Blankenship, from about 4 years of age until about 8, (approx. 1925-1930).

Then her mom came and got her.

Would you like to start e-mailing? I do have your e-mail from your last post.

syl_pet@hotmail.com

Thanks, Sylene - I have a picture of my grandfather's wedding party (Alphonse Carbone) - I'll try to scan and post it.

Seems like your mother-in-law and my mother were first cousins - did she live in Tacoma ? I don't remember her. In my mother's wedding book (June 13, 1942) there are "Hazel Carbone" and "Lorraine Carbone" signed in right under Frank and Julia Carbone - I'm not sure who they are. Also "Robert B Carbone" was there. Mr and Mrs Thomas J Carbone gave her a wedding present - maybe they forgot to sign the book.

My mom had a shower on June 8, 1942 given by "Mrs Frank J Carbone and Mrs Thomas J Carbone" Attending were "Mrs RA Carbone", Mrs Sandy Carbone.

I also see Mr and Mrs Gus Carbone, Frank Jr and Rossanna Carbone giving wedding presents.

It would be interesting to place all these Carbones - I only know a few of them!

regards

Rich
Hello! It does sound as though we are related.

You have such a wonderful Family Tree, so much information!

My Mom-in-law, Roxie Etta Carbone Peterson, told me what she could remember, but there is still so much to know.

She said that when she visited her Uncle Frank & Aunt Julia, they spoke Italian in the home. Her Grandmother was bedridden and she would help care for her.

This was around the mid 1930s as Roxie was about 14 years old.

She fondly recalled visiting her Dad's Barber Shop with her half sisters, Dorothy May (Mae)& Dolly. I'm not sure if she had met them before.

We have only the two pictures of Thomas & none of any other family members. I've posted one & will post the other.

I hope we can exchange more information.

Sincerely,
Sylene Peterson (wife of your 2nd Cousin Alfred)
syl_pet@hotmail.com

Alphonse Carbone was my Grandfather - his wife was Rose Ruffo Carbone. Sounds like we are 2nd cousins.

I remember Frank Carbone (My great uncle) His second wife was Mary - they lived on Sheridan Ave, I think. I don't remember Thomas - he died when I was 9, so I must have met him.

Their parents were Fortunato Carbone and Rossanna Crocco - both born in Calabria.

Best Regards

Rich Carone
richc@korvis.com

Re: Carbone Family in San Giovanni, Italy

Hello,

My great-grandfather was a Carbone from San Giovanni. Antonio Carbone was born in 1895. In 1906, his parents sent him to the US (alone) to work. He arrived in Barrington, RI, and lived for a short time in Providence, RI. He married Elvira Petrarca, of Fornelli, Italy, in 1916. He lived in Woonsocket, RI until his death in 1977.

As for the San Giovanni relatives, all I have are the names of his parents: Aldor Carbone and Lucia Carbone. In Antonio's obituary, Lucia's name is listed as "Lucia (Carbone) Carbone". I'm not sure what to make of that.

One of Antonio's children, Gino Joseph Carbone (1922-1973) moved out to Texas. The rest stayed here in RI.

I'm not sure if that helps, but there it is. For anyone else that is reading this, I'm also rather desperate for additional information on this line. It has been a complete dead-end for me.
Hi, Thank you for your posting about the Carbone Restaurant.
A number of months ago, I contacted that restaurant and had a conversation with one of their descendants who was
going to look into her family background for Catherina Carbone. They were fairly certain that their family also came from Colliano, Italy. I have not yet heard back from her. My sister and I were invited to visit their restaurant but so far, we have been unable to make that trip. Catherina Carbone was my great-grandmother who owned a Cantina in the hills just above Salerno in the late 1800's to the early 1920's. Your reply was directed to my sister while we were both working on this genealogy project. My sister posted for me being as I was changing computers at that time. Thanks again for your information and for taking the time to reply to our posting. Lee Canevari

Re: Surname CARBONE

I have the greatest of respect for your scholarly message, and I hope it survives for many centuries on the Internet.

Since your message contained the word "Normanna," I wondered if that referred to Normandy---even though I have no personal connection to the surname CARBONE. I consulted a French dictionary titled, "Dictionnaire étymologique des noms et prénoms de France," by Albert Dauzat, c1987. I am not a scholar and do not understand the French language.

Page 87 treats CARBONE under the main entry CARBON, and the definition mentions "ou norm.-picarde de charbon." On page 111 is the main entry for CHARBON. Although I do not understand the discussion, I am making this contribution in the hope that some scholar will find the time to read the book in a library and post a response---if it would be of interest to those bearing the surname CARBONE. By that time, I will be off this message board.

Les

Re: Carbones from Cirella or Benestare, Reggio Calabria

Sheri,
As I understand it, Cirella (province of Reggio Calabria) was a separate town but in the 1800's it was under the jurisdiction of Benestare. It later fell (and is now) under the jurisdiction of another town called Platì and is sometimes referred to as Cirella di Platì. I still have cousins in Benestare (my father's family) and this is what they've said about Cirella. I've been to Benestare twice, but never to Cirella. I have looked at microfilm records of vital statistics for Cirella, but they end around the time my grandfather was born (1858). I haven't had much luck or time to delve further. You could try Cirella, Benestare or Plati.
To find which microfilm might have records of your relatives, you can check the Family History Library Catalog http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.a...
I clicked "place name search" and put the name of the town in the first box and Reggio Calabria below that. You can request and view films at a Family History Center near you.

There are Pangallos in my family also. My father's sister Maria Elisabetta Romeo married Carmine (Carmelo) Pangallo (I always assumed Zio Carmelo was from Benestare as was my father's family). Don't know much about his family--only one daughter of his survives (now lives in New York). Zio Carmelo joined my father in Youngstown, OH in the early 1920s and sent for Maria and their oldest son, Giuseppe, in 1928. They lived in Youngstown and had two more children (daughters). Maria was the only one of my father's immediate family who settled in the U.S. The others stayed in Benestare (one sister emigrated to Australia in the 1950s).

Feel free to email me if you'd like to discuss more.
Jean Romeo
Orphaned young age and is going from memories when 8 yrs old. What he remembers...
B/D 6/29 1938 (year may +/-) in one of the burroughs of New York. Born @ home - birth not registered. Or record destroyed by fire.
Mom died when he was an infant - can't remember her name. Thinks she may be Polish - vague memory of a grandmother on her side.
Dad - Frank Carbone. Not sure if Frank was a nickname. Came from Sicily by himself in the 30's. Was a dock worker. Jim remembers going on boats or barges w/Frank up the Hudson and seeing a cousin. Frank died 1946 (+/-) possibly cancer
Jim was taken to St Dominicks childrens home (Blauvelt, NY) and lived there from 8 - 16yrs old. Does not recall visits from any relative.
My husband's grandmother , Elizabeth Parise, was born in Benestare, Italy on Dec 18, 1882 in the Calabria Region. Her parents were Rosa and Guiseppe Parise.

She married Bruno Pangallo(born 1878 in Cirella Reggio Calabria) sometime around 1899. Bruno came to the states in 1900. They eventually settled in the WA/ID state border area and their first child was born in 1913 in Green Acres, WA.

She eventually had daughters Josephine ,Camella, Mary and Rose. She also had sons John, James, Rocky.

I have been trying to research the Cirella portion of Reggio Calabria. Was this another name for Benestare or is it a town that no longer exists?
